I have a Lyman 319289 single cavity mold but I'm not sure what it should be used in. I understand that the 32-40 could use this boolit but I was wondering what else it might be good for. I originally got it for sizing to fit an oversized 303 Brit rifle but later ended up getting a custom mold with a long bore-riding section.

Perhaps a .318" groove diameter 8x57J?

What does it drop, dia. wise? My 319 mold drops at 322 and I use it in 32 Winchester Special

The ".319" boolit's were designed for the 32-40's. The 319289 was for the 32-40 schuetzen rifles.

If I recall, this molds drops at about .321 with wheel weights and a little extra tin. I might just put it on eBay and get a mold more suited to my present needs.

Isn't this one of Dr. Hudson's designs?

Yes, it is a Dr Hudson design, 185gr tapered 32-40 bullet for breech seating designed when Ideal was in business. Molds labeled Lyman for this mold are a result of Lyman buying Ideal and putting their name on old Ideal molds until they discontinued them . The 319289 is no longer in production and is a desirable mold

Doc Hudson also designed the Ideal 375272, 310gr, a 38-55 tapered bullet for breech seating. It too is a desirable mold and also no longer in production

I shoot both bullets and with the right reload and a good set of eyes are very accurate

gunboat, I would buy it from you but have two in inventory now

I seem to recall reading that the 319273 was the original Hudson design meant to be breech seated ahead of the .32-40 case when smokeless powder loads were used. The rifle chambers had to be especially throated for this boolit. The 319289 came along later for those who wanted to breech seat and use smokeless powder but didn't want the chamber throat reamed out and forced to use only that boolit afterwards.

There was a similar pair of boolit designs in .38-55.

+1 to Bent Ramrod. That is a purpose-designed bullet, and although you could probably size it to force fit it for another job, it really shines for breech seating in a 32-40 single shot rifle in front of a mild load of smokeless powder such as 4759 or 4227. It would really be a shame to try to use it for anything else, and there is bound to be someone out there who really wants and needs it for its stated purpose. JMHO, of course, but I'm highly attached to mine for use in my Winchester high walls.

I have a 319273 "Dr. Hudson" mold. Though I don't have a 32-40, my plan was to try and see if it would be useful in any of my Commission 88 "S" rifles with bores that slug in the 318"-319" range. Seat them out as far as practical and look for a 1200 FPS load and see what happens. Has anyone tried this before? If it doesn't work out then I will look to trade this mold for a 323471. Thanx, Bud
