I have an 1894 Loewe manufactured Brazilian Mauser, customed to 7.62x39, with fancy pistol grip and Monte Carlo stock, 24" barrel, 1 in 12 twist, slugged at .308, weight 9lbs and mounted with a 4x12 Redfield scope.

After trying numerous cast bullet and powder combinations the best 100 yard accuracy was 12.5 grains of 2400 with either the Lyman 311644 90gr sized to .310 and the Saeco 315 175g sized to .310 and both gas checked. Measured velocities were 1580 and 1600 respectively. Accuracy 1 1/2" at 100 yards.

Any advice on a load that will get me to 1"

Thanks,
Walt

Might try some H4895. Not sure what book you may find it - maybe Ed Harris' article.

That's a beautiful rifle you have there...

Did they cut the chamber with the "Standard" mil-spec reamer or did you use a custom reamer to get more of a "Target" style throat and leade?

Thanks

Nice looking rifle and that load sounds about right. There is so much data and you have no gas system to worry about running.

Happy shooting,
rlp

Larry Gibson has a thread here on lvr. Go no fruther if shooting heavy boolits and many thanks to fellas like Larry and others who willingly share their wealth of info! That lvr really works in my ruskies!

For light loads in my 7.62x39R T/C Encore (.308 BORE) I load the Lee C309-113-F gas checked and powder coated over 9gr. Unique, have also loaded O Buck sized .311 and lubed with 45-45-10 over 1.8 Bullseye This load will very effectually stop the charge of an enraged mouse! GP

truckjohn,
I do not know, did not do the custom. I bought the finished product. Fit and finish is excellent. I would guess that they used a custom reamer because the long Lyman and Saeco cast bullets fit and engrave slightly on the back grove rings.

nekshot,
Forgive my ignorance, but what is lvr?

Might look at H-322 for that rifle.

I ran into something with my CZ527 in 7.62x39 with reloads....

I found that with jacketed - I had to use pretty hot primers to get consistent ignition... For hunting - I went with "Magnum" primers or I would end up with really bad cold weather performance... 400 FPS difference between 90F and 30F with "Normal" primers.... With magnum primers - 20 fps difference...

Otherwise - I stick with Winchester primers for good consistent ignition.

With cast bullet loads - you may find the cooler Federal or CCI primers work just fine...

I use 24 g H322 with Lee 160 .312 in SKS . Ed Harris has good info

I have used a 200 grain 311299,(sized to .310"), lubed with Lyman Super Moly. Gaschecked with Hornady copper Gaschecks. They shoot well with aluminum gas checks as well.
for powder I used a slightly compressed charge of Varget. I am not at home right now to give you the charge weight, sorry!

i seated my boolet tightly into the lead when closeing the bolt. It shot around 1-1/4" inch for 5 shots consistantly. It burned nice and clean only after my charge was slightly compressed and seated into the rifling.

I donot remember the velocity, so I will have to check my records when I get home. I "THINK" it was around 1550-1600fps.

this was shot through my Ruger Hawkeye compact with the 16" barrel.
I changed out the blocked magazine well for the 7.62X39 and replaced it with a standard 308 magazine well, follower, and spring.

this allows me to feed two rounds with the long 311299 boolets seated to the bottom of the neck, through the magazine. If I load the magazine with any more than 2 rounds, the rounds dont feed as reliably. I tend to put one in the tube while hunting and two in the magazine. Fun to shoot!

hope this info helps someone and enjoy our shooting heritage!

The powder of choice in my SKS is H4895 with the Lee 160-312 boolit sized to 314". Bore is .3135".
I can easily get over 2,300 fps with loads from one of the loading manuals. Very accurate for an SKS too.
I have read of great results using 4198 and Reloder 7.

With either of those bullets using a quality alloy such as linotype or #2 and casting for quality is essential to 1 moa accuracy. Rejecting bullets with any defect no matter how small and weight sorting to +/- .1 gr are also essential. Squarely seating quality crimp on GCs are also necessary as is using a good quality lube.

You might also seriously consider a slower medium burning powder in the 4895 to the faster slow burning powders such as AA4350 that gives close to 100% load density. Using quality fire formed NS'd cases is also a good idea (I prefer the SR primered R-P cases for my bolt action 7.62x39).

The cock on closing action has a very long lock time with a heavy striker. If you dry fire off the bench you will see the cross hairs dance and jerk around as the rifle is jarred by the striker fall. If you convert the action to cock on opening the lock time and striker fall become very much like that of a modern bolt action.

It's a combination of all the little things mentioned that should get you down into the moa range. Most of the time there is no magic bullet or "one load" that will get you there consistently if the bullets, the loading, the shooting and the rifle are not up to it.

Accuracy realised is the sum of eliminating all the small variables
