I doubt I will ever be able to purchase one but it's neat to see one made.

Thanks for posting. I've lusted for a fine large bore double rifle for a long time. I could probably scratch up the dough for one of the H&Hs, but could never justify it. I'd be afraid to take it out of the case. :)

It's interesting that this category of gun actually has two markets that blur together- the antique collectible market blurs into the currently made market. Probably not a bad investment.

Why the "but"?

Thanks for posting. Thought it very interesting that the locks on the side by side shotgun haven't changed all that much over a couple hundred years. To be sure there are improvements in design, steels used but basically the same. I pity the guy doing the testing of the double rifles. I had the chance to shoot a large bore double rifle years ago. Two shots was as much fun as I could stand. Frank

Amazing amount of hand work to finish those beauties.

I spend a lot of time teaching Saudi students, and one of the hardest things to convince them of, is that there are people in the West who do manual work, and consider themselves, often with the agreement of the less fortunate, head and shoulders above a whole office-full of Dilberts.

I suppose that H&H employee was partly self-selected from among their staff. Recoil affects different people differently, certainly not the smallest and slightest most, and I suppose if you shoot 1011 elephants, or can fit a shotgun to the breech face with lamp-black and files, you can admit it.

WDM Bell did some barrel regulation testing for Daniel Fraser in his youth, and claimed that the experience gave him a lifelong aversion to recoil which caused him to shoot more of his 1011 elephants with the 7x57 Rigby renamed the .275 Rigby than anything else, and some with the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer. Sir Samuel Baker, although he appreciated the virtues (well, single virtue probably) of his 2-bore muzzle-loading smoothbore, considered that he was never quite as good a shot afterwards as he had been before.

This is not totally off-topic, as it was a Holland and Holland, but I expect they preferred to think of something else afterwards. I see a 2 bore cartridge is now made for shooters of the getting your head examined school. Just think of all the fun they must be having! But I also hear you can get a better deal from latex-clad ladies with whips.

Craftsmanship is becoming such a rarity these days, its just so great to see people practicing their craft to the highest standards. (also humbling)

I happen to be the only gun maker in the world who makes rifles for the 2 Bore S&H Cartridge.
I make them in both a single shot:http://www.stolzergunsmithing.com/2borejonesfinished.htm (there is 5 pages of documented build here:http://stolzergunsmithing.webs.com/2borejonesunderlever.htm ).
And a Double Rifle:http://www.stolzergunsmithing.com/2boredoublerifle.htm
10+ hours of video documenting the complete build of a 2 Bore double rifle can be found on my blog or youtube channel:

http://stolzergunsmithing.wordpress.com/

If anyone is interested and has the time, there are several fully documented builds on my website, blog and youtube channel. Unlike a lot of other gunmakers I don't hide my knowledge from the rest of the world, I give it freely to anyone who wants to learn.
