I scored some Hi-Skor 700-X and am beginning to load up and test it. I've started with 3.5 gr behind a 150 gr home cast ww sized .358" lubed with Alox in Starline brass with a WSP. I with chronograph this through my son's Ruger BH 3-screw but I want to know if I should expect any success with 700-X in .44 Special with 240 gr (429667) cast at about 800 fps, or in .45 Colt with 250 gr (454190) cast ww at about 800 fps, or in 45 ACP with 230 gr (452374) at about 830 fps.

Am I going to find that 700-X is best used with lighter boolits and/or lower velocities than what I've cited here as my intentions?

I use it in 9mm and .38 Special to save my favored powders. Good practice powder, cheap and usually available. I use two to three tenths of a grain less than Bullseye. It will not meter through my Auto Disk worth a poop, fortunately my Uniflow does perfectly with it. Case fill is awesome, a double charge would be difficult or impossible. Accuracy and velocity spread is not as good as similar pistol powders but good enough for practice.

I was given a keg of it and tried it in my .44 Specials and 45 Colts. I didn't care for it in the .44's as the max load of 4.9 grs. with a 255-ish gr. SWC only netted 750-775 fps. But I will say it was an accurate load.

The 45 Colt was another matter entirely. Using Brian Pearce's recommendation of 6.5 grs. velocities with bullets from 255 to 285 grs ran 830 fps with the heavier bullet and 850-860 with the lighter and accuracy has been great. Fact is just yesterday I loaded and fired nearly 50 rounds of this load out of my NM Vaquero using a Lee 255 gr RNFP. Accuracy even at 50 yds. was great. Bear in mind this load is .8 grs over Hodgdon's published maximum but is an oft published 14,000 psi load in Handloader magazine.

burned a lot of it years ago in 12guage traploads. finally loaded up the remainder few years back in .45 ACP, 4g under a 200g swc as best i recall

Like 35 Whelen, I didn't care much for 700X in my .44 Spls but have burned a lot of it in .38s and .45 ACPs. 3.2 gr. 700X under a 148 gr. WC has been my 'standard' .38 Spl plinking/practice load for a good many years and 4.2 with a 185 gr. SWC was my 'softball' load for indoor bullseye.

700X makes great trap and skeet loads. It also works great in a 03A3 with cast boolits and 10+ grains for a plinking load. Not sure of exact amount. Started at 10 gr and worked up 0.5 gr at a time.

700x works great in .45 ACP too! Makes a h3llified bowling pin load under a 255gr Keith!

I use it in 30-30 with good results for woman loads

I use it in 12ga trap loads. Also in plinking loads for .45

I have a couple three bottles of it. I just follow the load data in the standard load manuals for cast.
I do not use load data obtained from comments on the net.

Quit using it when I switched to TiteGroup last year.

I actually like it a lot in 44 special. 4.5 to 5.0 gr under any 240-250 boolit usually proves plenty accurate. A lot like a faster version of unique except it doesn't leave the sooty residue when used in low pressure loads the way unique does. Biggest downside is that it doesn't get along with some powder measures all that great.

Another vote for 45 acp use. Worked well for me using 200 swc and 230 round nose. Good accuracy, clean, and better case fill than bullseye or titegroup. Metered well enough from the lee autodisk to get better accuracy than bullseye at similar velocity. 1911 sti spartan V

I bought a big coffee can full of it cheap from a gun range that I belonged to in AZ that sold it to it's members for trap/skeet loads. I used a bunch with cornmeal to fire form 30 Herrett cases, and also for cast in .22 Hornet & 38 Special & it was acceptable but not great, but as mentioned it was hard to measure so that probably didn't help. I still have less than a pound, might have to try it again.

Thanks for the input. It's been so sour weather around here I haven't had a chance to try it through my chronograph. I'll give it a run and am looking forward to trying your recipes 35 Whelen, and Deep Six.
