Bullet: Lee C309-170-F with Hornady GC. Actual weight 177gr. Lube 50/50 Beeswax/Vaseline. Alloy was scrap bullets mostly jacketed.

Load: 22.0 IMR5744. Velocity 1760. Energy 1211 at the muzzle.

Weapon: Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308 Winchester.

Shot was taken from up high to about 35yards. I hit her square in the lung and you can see from the picture below that it did a lot of damage. Exit hole was about the size of a quarter. When I hit her she jumped and bucked then ran for just a few short seconds and piled up about 30 yards from the shot. Lots of blood, didn't go far, just the way I like it. On the scale she's 84lbs without guts.

I was doubting myself with the bullet. I wasn't sure what would happen and feared tracking a wounded animal but the bullet performed as good as anything. CB's really are great, as long as you do your homework.

Congratulations! Feels very rewarding to use your own home poured, doesn't it?

My first cast bullet "small bore" kill was with a .30-30, but similar bullet and speed. It was also very, very close (like less than ten yards from my tree) and was the only one that gave a big exit hole and easily followed blood trail. All of them died pretty quick, but I need to work on what it takes to get expansion good enough to leave sizeable holes and good blood.

Great! Now it's time to make jerky!

I use that same boolit in my 94' 30/30 and really like it.

That's one of the reasons we love it so much.

I shoot a similar boolit(311041) to about the same velocity from all my 30 cal rifles. When you first start shooting these rounds it's normal to question whether they will kill a deer or not. Recoil and lack of noise make them seem really weak.
The deer seem to be unaware that it's a reduced load. Between me, my son and my neighbor we've shot a pretty good pile and performance has been excellent.

I do have a small HP to help start expansion. I sometimes have my doubts that it's needed but it gives me comfort anyway.

Good job! It does feel good to take one with your own boolit! I got my first last year with a .44spl.

Congratulations. You did the work and reaped the reward. I used my .308 last season(1st cast boolit kills in a modern gun) with the lee .312/165(sized and gc'd at .311 and 170 gr) over 30 gr 4895 for 2050 fps.
3 dead deer, and the satisfaction of my own boolits. Enjoy your harverst!

I have some very similar lung pics from deer kills with my .308 Win. Gotta love cast boolits. Congrats!

Nice , tender eating there. Isn't 5744 one of the " Accurate " line, of powders, there for it is not and has never been IMR5744. Listing loads should be accurate.

Good shooting,

Ken

Your bullet performed exactly like a cast bullet should. Good job.
I have found that deer or elk, 30 yards is pretty average for them to go until they realize they are dead.

Congratulations on your first cast boolit kill! As we all know on this site, super velocities aren't necessary for a good kill. Enjoy the steaks.

Thanks for the report, Steve! I have some AA 5744 that I haven't tried in my .308s or .30-06s yet. Looks like I'll have to load some up. Tt.

Good shootn'! I got my first cast boolit kills September of 2013. I walked up on a group of wild hogs feeding across a ravine and dropped the first hog, 80 pounds dressed, shot just behind the shoulder. Took out one rib entering and two exiting. I picked out a small pig, 55 pounds, and slung three rounds at it running and hit it every time. I used the Lyman 31141 at 2,000 fps from a model 94 wearing a One Ragged Hole peep and a homemade fiber front sight. One of the best rushes of my hunting career. Now I'm on a mission to put meat in the freezer with my SBH.

The 31141 & the 311291 are great hunting bullets in the 300 Savage, 308 type rifles. When I was stationed in Texas in the late 60's I would shoot a couple of whitetails with my pre 64 308 then stoke it with the #311291 & I think 12-15 grs. of RL7 with a pinch of kapok & whack turkeys. I would just shoot them in the breast, it didn't ruin any meat & was quiet so I didn't make a lot of noise spooking deer off my buddies lease.

Bet you'll never hunt with a jacketed bullet again.
I have some unused for 30 years....

I have a brand new Savage Model 10 (in 308, naturally), and except for the j-words the factory used when test firing it, I expect my rifle will never see/shoot them again. My intention in buying this rifle was to use "only" my own cast boolits in it :-P

I'm not going on 30 years, but I aint used a jacketed since my first cast kill. That was 5 years ago I think.
