View Full Version : Anyone using the Lyman 452-460?

I just picked one up. My Lyman book lists 1.160 for OAL. Is this correct? I put a dummy round together at that and it looks a bit short.

I don't remember the exact length, but it does look very short. Mine feed very well in my old Kimber 1911.

I use it and the RCBS copy. They are short when seated. I crimp just shy of the shoulder on the front driving band. I found they fed fine in full size 1911's but were finicky in Para Ordinace and Colt Commander size guns. Never stopped to find out why, just loaded 230 RN for the smaller guns and went back to shooting.

I tested the 452460 in the .45 Colt years ago because of an article in Shooting Times about tack driving accuracy in the .45 Colt. That 452460 was the most accurate boolit in the .45 Colt.

The only reason I quit it was because it was too light for what I was looking for. And it was too ugly seated in the .45 Colt case.

I have heard that the 452460 was designed so that the nose of the bullet would strike the same points of the ramp and chamber as 230 gr hardball in a full size Government model. It was supposed to be a lighter alternative to hardball for target shooting in an unmodified full size Colt. Don't know if that's true or not but it seems credible at least.

I have that mold and it works OK in my full size Government model series 70, pretty good in my Commander, and is VERY accurate out of my 5" 625 in ACP and AR brass.

All my 45acp' like it, except wife's commander size Kimber. I seat w/ 1/8" or so shoulder exposed.

The nose shape, like many of Lyman's offerings, has wandered around a bit over
the years. I have one double cavity 452460 that I bought from a member here
that has been very accurate for me and feeds very reliably. IMO, the H&G 68 is
more likely to feed 100% in more different pistols, but I think the 452460 is a bit
more accurate for target loads in several of my guns.

I have a mold that throws significantly shorter-nosed and rounder nosed versions
but have not shot that version enough to have an opinion on whether the different
nose makes any difference in function.

Short version: good accurate design. Try 4.0-4.2gr of TG or BE for a target load.

I loved that boolit for bullseye competition, it was my first mold - single cavity - then I got another and doubled my production speed.

Some years ago Handloader magazine had an article where they pushed various light weight 45 boolits to the maximum for speed. What I recall about the 452460 was that it kept it's fine group size regardless of whether it was running slow or fast. With it's reputation for reliable feeding in the full size 1911s the bonus of speed and accuracy from one boolit makes it very appealing.

Yesterday I tried out the 30 rounds I had loaded in my Blackhawk and Springfield 1911. I didn't have any real problems with them in either gun, but I did pop out and check a cycled round from the bottom feeder and I saw where the nose had deformed slightly from its trip up the feed ramp. I'll load some up with a longer OAL to try next time.

I've been loading that bullet for years for myself and my son. I seat to 1.190. Works reliably in all our Colts and Kimbers.
