It looked like the design from "The Charcoal Foundry (http://www.amazon.com/Charcoal-Foundry-Build-Metal-Working/dp/1878087002/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1420257193&sr=1-1&keywords=the+charcoal+foundry)" by David Gingery.

Part of a series. Pretty good information.

I have made a few small furnaces to melt aluminum, bronze, and some brass. It really doesn't take all that much to get the job done. I have to cast some bronze parts for a local gunsmith in a charcoal furnace.

I made one of those years ago from the Gingery book. I had all his books on making a metal shop from scrap. I had my own tool and die shop at the time, but was always interested in doing things the hard way. I learned a lot from those books.

It sure does hurt! I splashed just a drop on my leg, burned thru denim in a heartbeat. Still have a scar after 15 yrs.

We had pattern maker who was a member of our local club. for years He made freeland style spotting cope stands ( the bi pod style). Hs had aluminum form and would use these to form a sand mold then melt down cans and pour them. A little work on the drill press drilling and taping a few holes and a base was there from scrap. He cast alot of things from jewlry to odd items. Would be a great skill set to master.

I always find these videos amazing from the standpoint of one of these youngsters finding out that you can DO things on your own instead of searching the Internet to buy it from China.

I guess that's part of being an Old Fart. I raised by a dad who did his own plumbing, carpentry, painting, gardening, most mechanical, etc. The use of hand tools was just what one did, not some entry into 'maker' status.

It's served me well for sixty-odd years.

My Grandfather and Dad were Tool makers and farmed an uncle was a die cast die maker. I also am a tool and die maker. Making it yourself is a given in our family. Some things are easier than others. You would be surprised wha can be done with files chiesels a hack saw and simple hand tools and a little skill and patience.

Thanks! Now that I am on my computer, I can easily check it out. Been wanting to build a hi temp forge pot like that for a long time. May even want to go up to brass melting temps. I have seen some with enough air and charcoal it can reach that temp. I would like to be able to do lost wax investment casting and green sand castings for antique repro parts I need.

Thanks,

banger

I recognized his voice right away. I particularly like his spot welder made from a microwave and downloaded the video a while back. Now all I need is a free microwave.

If I can find the pictures of my furnace ill post them. Its tore down and in the barn right now but needs to be brought back out. Its a propane/oil burner built on a regenerative blower.

I had an old (1930s) plumbers furnace that roared like a jet and would put out enough heat to turn a cast iron smelting pot red hot. It had no problems melting antimony or aluminum. Sold it during a garage sale we had since my neighbor gave me a fish fryer. The plumbers furnace went thru propane pretty fast.

It was interesting watching the video as it was very well put together.

I would add a charcoal basket to let the crucible be removed and replaced without messing with the charcoal except to add.
