I am in the city today.
I was looking at a Lee pot. Asked the sales staff if I could open the box to look.
Started talking to them about a 20 lb. pot.
Seems they discoutinued the RCBS pot.
I picked up the display for $150.00, less the mold guides and stopper.
I am at a machine shop several hrs/ per week. I think I can deal with the not there parts.
My biggest problem is I am in a hotel room and can not get to my garage.

yup.
Ripped it out of the dudes hands, with the red, hand written price sticker and headed for the check stand. :-D

What does the RCBS melter have/do that the Lee does not? How are they different enough to justify the price difference?

The RCBS that I bought is 20 lb.
The Lee I was looking at is 10 lb.

xr650 congrats on a great find. I wish I could find another one at a price along those lines. I did have 6 but one was stolen and now only have 5. I want to replace the stolen one at some point in time but right now money is a little short for things of that nature.....Wes

If you appreciate good equipment, then yes they are worth it. You have to use one to really know what I mean. Until then you won't know what you are mising. Kinda like the difference between a Lyman sizer and a Star, have to be used to be appreciated.

Well, at least some of the used ones on ebay have come down a little in price, the last 3 that I was watching went for under 200.... Still, great deal, KR! I hope I get that lucky some day.

RCBS Pro-Melter is IMHO one of the best melters I have ever used. I have three Lee melters and they do work but once you use a Pro Melt you won't go back to the Lee units. You will never be sorry you bought quality!

Thanks for the words of engouragement.
I would be a little hacked off if I would have bought this, and it wasn't worth the expense.
Looked at pics of the missing parts. Doesn't seem to be to difficult to mfg.

RCBS should have the parts in stock. $150 is a screamin' deal.

Actually, knowing RCBS, a nicely worded email to the service department would get you the parts for no charge. As has been said on this forum time and time again, you can't beat RCBS Service. If you did not get a manual, there is a downloadable pdf on the site as well.

That was a great find. I wish that I could have been that lucky. I just odered a new one from Mid South about a week ago with a $320 price tag on it. I should have it in a few more days since it was a back ordered item. I checked my order a few minutes ago and it is processing so the pot made it in. But the great part is you got a brand new one for less than half price. Like stated above, a call to RCBS service dept might net you all of the missing parts at little or no cost.

Wow! Am I glad I bought mine last August! Midway birthday special price was $265.49 and I almost didn't do it.

I've enjoyed my RCBS Pro melt for ~25 years.

The bottom pour spout plugged up shortly after I started using it and I've never managed to get it completely unplugged. It hasn't bothered me too much as I've been OK with casting with a ladle.

Anyone else had this problem, and how did you get it unplugged?

RCBS has outstanding service ! I bought an old scale that was missing parts and they sent them to me with no charge (even no shipping) ! I explained that I should be paying but they sent it anyway.

GLL,

It's 25+ years old. Do you think that I should send it back to them now? I'm sure I don't have my original sales receipt!

They won't ask for it. They will fix it if they have parts; If they don't, they will send you a new one. Count on it.

I bought one very used a month or so back. It indirectly came from an estate. Give 50 for it. Works great so far. At the time I had no idea what they went for new although I knew what the Lymans sold for. At any rate I've casted about 1300 bullets so far :drinks:

We made it home tonight. I plugged in the furnace, put in an ingot and it melted.
It would have been normal for me if it wouldn't have melted lead.

I think I will give RCBS a call tomorrow and see what the parts will cost.
Don't know if I will be able to wait that long though.
I did get a new mold, so maybe I can use it while I am waiting for parts.

Thanks a lot for the information and encouragement to send the Pro-Melt back to get the bottom spigot unplugged.

I want to finish with at least one more big batch of casting before I pack it up.

I'll report back about what they say.

I bought an R C B S mould on eBay cheap because the sprue plate was missing. Called their 800 # and said I wanted to buy the missing parts. Could not buy them because they should not have come loose. We will replace them FREE of charge. Beat that with any kind of stick. BWB:castmine:

I decided any kind of shipping would be too slow.
I made the parts myself.

Installed them so I could cast over the week end.

The furnace cast great. Too bad I thought I was smarter than RCBS and left off the small rod on the end of the shut off pin. [smilie=1:

Dripped like it was raining. :groner:

I went ahead and used it catching all the drippins. Ya would a thought I was making gravy.

Today I punched a hole in the end of the shut off pin and installed a small pin.

I filled the furnace about 2/3 full.
It works like a champ.
I'm such a happy guy.
No drips.
Only need a catch pan for my oopses overfilling the sprue plate.

I don't think work will mind if I call in dead tomorrow so I can cast. :drinks:
