Having nothing to hunt I went out and shot paper this morning
savage model 340 30-30 with a old steel tube weaver with post
VERY cold 30 deg F
6 rounds, 3/50yds and 3/75yds.... #311291 sized 0.309 / 170gr / 28gr Win748
6 rounds, 3/50ysd and 3/75yds..... Lee C312 sized 0.311 / 180 gr / 28gr Win 748
the total of 12 measures about 1.75 sq...I probably could have done better but I WAS COLD and didn't bother taking my time..just shot like I would have if I were hunting.

interesting that the point of impact was virtually identical for both loads at each different range!

Now I need your opinions.....
the weaver scope with post is OK but I have a spare Leupold 3x9 compact Vari-II
should I stick with the old weaver or go with the Leupold?

You should use the scope you want to use. I would prefer the Weaver, but that is just my choice.

They are good rifles. I'm not gonna let mine go anytime soon.

My standard load in mine is the NOE 311041 clone with 26 grains of IMR4895. Hasn't grouped quite as tight as yours, but almost. Definitely a good woods deer rifle.

I have a K6 and several spare Leupolds I keep around. I bought the K6 for old time's sake but the newer Leupolds are brighter and better, at least for me. YMMV.

If the Weaver does not fog and is clear, I would prefer it with that reticle. Great for low light. If foggy or yellowed, the scope can be rebuilt for a relatively nominal sum.

I think I am going to stick with the weaver....its clear and doesn't fog and even at 75 yds I can see that little red dot on the target...plus it just seems to fit that style of rifle

I have a steel tube Weaver K4 on my 340 and it looks "right".

I want one of the variations of that gun to play with and the least I have see one sell for is $325 and it had seen much better days,

Oh well, things come to those that wait . . .

I'm waiting for a cheapie/great shooter.

Keep looking, they turn up pretty reasonable sometimes.

I love the post for hunting, for target work the lupy might be better.
