Bought it for $435 from a mechanic who had a lien on it. Long story...

Nothing. Gas guzzling big block making ten times more power than any one person needs to make a beer run or drive to the gun range. Archaic technology may be simple but it's still lousy and inefficient. I loved it at the time but I've since grown up and learned better. My Toyota will still be running when engines like that are on their 3rd or 4th rebuild......and my Toyota has a 10yr 100K warranty AND it starts EVERY TIME without patting the gas, pulling a choke cable, swearing and muttering some mystic incantation.
I used to love old cars and kept an old 'fun toy' for a long time. Now I see their real value....scrap to melt down and make a new car.

1964 Buick Electra two tone 4 door. Pass everything but a gas station, handled like a boat. Paid $365 in 1974. Drove it till after we were married, sold it for $100 in 1976.

I had a red '87 Chevy S10 blazer as a first car. I don't even remember what year it was anymore, an '87 maybe? It was not to old, but had some oil field pipe dropped on the roof before I was given it. I bet everyone wanted their first car to be on a salvage title, even if it was free. I was cutting weeds in the same pipe yard one hot summer day and all the glass started shattering. I guess they did not put the roof on right and it became the pipe yard run about. It was not worth putting every piece of glass back in it a second time.

48 Plymouth with 2 leather inserts. Sold it to the chief of police for $75. He tore it down cause a mopar insert gave out. I told him I was selling it for junk with no guarentees before he took it off my trailer.
He had it painted for free, and a reman crank installed for free. The Chief sold it to a kid who didn't know it had a high gear. Last I saw it, it was sitting on the side of I 40 (Old Fort) looking like Old Faithful.

54 Chrysler new Yorker small hemi engine but it got decent gas mileage and when a kid ran into the back end of it in his vw bug all it did was leave red paint on my rear bumper messed up the vw though. It had electric windows and it was a 6 volt system with the generator on the back end of the ps pump, the car rode really good on the highway on long trips it would start to put you to sleep if you didn't watch yourself. Yeah I would pay a couple grand to have it back it was a nice car had 278,000 miles on it when I sold it it had the adapter for using a roll of toilet paper for a oil filter.

I've got two I'd like to have back. The first, if I could get it back in the shape it was in when I bought it and not when I sold it: '81 Jeep CJ-5, that little rascal would go anywhere you could get the front tires between or up on.... Second one I'd like to have back is a '69 Chevy PU. It still had the "window sticker" in the glove box. $2200.00 brand new in"69, three on the tree, 350, Oak floored bed. I opened my mouth and popped off a price and the ole boy took me up on it. Didn't really want to sell it, but as a man of my word I let it go down the road. I really wished I had that one back. Absolutely no rust at all on it, straight body, ran like a scalded dog.

1978 Chevy C10 longbed that my dad bought from my uncle. Uncle had bought it new with a 6.2 diesel in it. He blew the engine and dropped a 350 in it. Dad got it with the 350 and drove it for a few years before the 350 went. He parked it and mom had a used 350 and trans put in it and gave it to me for my sweet 16.

Turned 16, fired it up and drove across town with a friend of mine, got it towed back home. Guy that put the engine/trans in didn't tighten the bolts that hold those things together, and me not knowing any better a the time...

So I wound up parking it and eventually selling it for $500.

That was the first vehicle I had, and whoever has it now can keep it.

The first vehicle I had for more than a couple of hours was a 1981 F100, I bought it from a local used car dealership that my parents used. We were going down there, to my shagrin, to put a down payment on a car so I'd have a vehicle to drive to school since the C10 bit the dust. The F100 had been traded in the previous day.

It was no beauty queen, but $300 down and $200 a month for 6 months and it was mine. I'd give a couple hundred to have it back, just because I can always use another truck to run through the pasture in.

When it shelled the trans I limped it into a friends farm yard where we opened up on it with the guns from the trunk. We just came back from the range and were 5 miles out of town. Used the tractor to shove the carcass back into the grove where it still sits rusting away.

Weak link was the powerglide.

Zero. Had a GMC Sonoma with 4 banger and manual everything. It was ok but very underpowered, electrical problems, driveline issues, HVAC issues, the list goes on and on. I really loved it when I was driving at night and the headlights would just go out. I tried to fix it and gave up and brought to dealer. They replaced wiring, relays, etc. Never could get it fixed. I started to hate the damn thing and got rid of it when I could financially (with full disclosure). Now I have a 2013 F250 with the 6.7L diesel. While more expensive maintenence compared to my Sierra (which was a good truck), I love the creature comforts and hum of the diesel.

I bought it for $100 in 1981, it had 70Kmi. I sold it in 1982 for $180, it had 74Kmi at that time.

Now I know these are now collectable...Maybe I'd want it back, if someone did a decent job of fixing the body.

My second car I would love to have back, '71 Plymouth GTX, 440 Magnum with the slap stick shifter. It was probably a good thing that the GTX was gone before I lost my license or worse. The second owner after me lost his life in it at a very high velocity, reportedly around 150mph. I had had it to 145(on the speedo, and it had more), and my wife and I decided with my gearheaded tendencies maybe it needed a new home.

1959 DKW, 3 cylinder, 2-cycle, front WD, $100 purchase in MN. It had excellent ground clearance and got around on rough ground. Fueled by dumping in a quart of 30-weight oil followed by 10 gallons of regular gas. It had a lot of other unusual features. It was not as unusual as the first car my dad let me drive - a 1959 Skoda! How that got to SE MO is beyond rational logic as is the fact that my dad paid $800 for it. Loved my DKW, but I would not want it back as I am much happier with my good old Chevy truck.

The torque twisted it pretty bad plus it would wheel stand really easy... MN rust got that one, sold it to a collector who wanted the engine/trans and the body tags to do a recreation on a good body.

You don't want that one... I was not nice to it plus it burned a ton of oil. For some reason I had a hard time keeping tires under it too and dad complained that the street looked like a drag strip launch pad... I grew up turning wrenches on a stock car pit crew, helped friends build and race street drag cars too(we had a track way out of town the sheriff would let us close off on Sundays. Had a fire truck and ambulance there).

I had a friend who had a AMX with a 401. I didn't know him when the car was driveable. When I'd visit him and his brothers at their parents farm in Stewart,MN. I'd see that AMX in the weeds... I guess she was a quick one, before the rust took her, My friend Joe had lots of stories about it.

Ive been hauling my 1st car around with me for 30 yrs ,a 1959 Ford Ranchero, 3 speed on the column 317hp T-Bird 352 from the factory in San Jose Ca June 23,1959.
I also recently aquired the auto that I took my very 1st ride in on June 30,1966 a 1956 Ford F100 with its 5th 312 ,it was factory with a 292,and the heavy duty rear step bumper with the bed posts. It isn't a 56 F100 just like that 1 it is THE truck.
Both are in pretty rough shape now but I have the tools skills and place to get them back up to snuff.

I wouldn't take Ft Knox for them. There's half a lifetime of memories in those 2 hunting ,fishing ,camping,old dogs ,young dogs , waking up in the clouds over a lake that landed a 5# cutthroat later in the day with my Dad, my 1st solo limit of ducks , bringing my oldest son home on his 2nd car ride after 5 weeks in an ICN. Nope wouldn't give them up for a freight train full of platinum.

My first car was a 1963 Ford Galaxy 500 , 390 CI auto. White with a red interior. My dad helped me purchase it from a neighbor down the street as it would not run. Learned how to take off the top of the 390, carb , manifold, heads. Sent heads to a shop for a valve job, probably not needed as the motor had maybe 65000 miles. Reinstalled items with a carb rebuild (probably why it would not run in the first place looking back). Installed pursuit police exhaust, cleaned and polished so it'd looked as if just came off the factory floor.
I was only 15 at the time, closing in on 16. I could have a license to drive at 16.5. My dad said my Mom would drive the car until I could get my license.
Loose hose clamp on the radiator, red light on the dash, my Mom cracks the block on my first car!
I would pay dearly to have that car in the condition it was in as my dad had it towed to the junk yard.
Still love my parents.

It's in pretty rough shape now days due to Illinios winters. Looking to trade it for a 4x4 pickup. Now my 2nd car is a 2004 Mustang GT 6spd supercharged. About the only thing stock on that car is the paint, interior, and engine block. That car isn't going anywhere.

My first car was a '58 Olds 88 that I bought in 1963. It was all I could afford. It might have gotten better gas mileage if all the chrome could have been removed. A thousand pounds lighter and it might have gotten 17-18 MPG. It was a real road car when it ran. I drove it from home to college, about a 350 mile trip for my last year.

After graduation, I traded it on a 1965 VW beetle. I suspect they gave me $1 in trade. I didn't miss it then and I don't now.

For the next 25 years I tried the patriotic thing and drove American cars. Between large repair bills and tow charges, I soured on Fords, Chevys and Chryslers. I finally bought a Toyota Avalon in 1996. Drove it for 10 years with no problems and only replaced it when SWMBO decided it was time. Got another Avalon.

I do have to say that a 1998 F150 "almost" restored my faith in the domestic auto industry. I say almost because after driving it for 15 years, I got a Toyota Tundra for my last truck. At my age I don't need the hassle of dealing with Ford or GM dealers.

I do miss my 1981 1ton crew cab chevy, I grew up around the truck I learned to drive in that truck in 2002 it was given to me by my grandfather. It was of course wore out and very tired, but old Hercules as I named it was given a new lease on life in 2003 when I put a brand spankin new 4 bolt main 350 engine, rebuilt bell housing clutch, brakes, differential, bearings,shocks, wiring, rebuilt carb, and the help of an old family friend who is a mechanical genius General Motors being his favorite gasoline motors to work with gave me help with theee timing! oh boy lol
It still looked like a old rusty truck after I was done. But with the help of the friend I mentioned, a few performance enhancements were made he he! The old truck could get up and move,even though it had a small 350 it had power to get the job done. Most of guys at school laughed at me when I told them that big truck had a 350 in it. Especially the guys with shiny new Duramax Chevys. But stopped after they took a spin with me.
In 2009 my new girl friend now my wife and I hit a rough patch and we needed money now!
I let the old truck go for with tears in my eyes for $1200 only 25,000 on the motor. From 2012 to 2014 I tried to buy it back from the guy I sold it to but he would have none of it. I offered him $4,000 still no sale. At least I know he takes care of old Hercules and his kids seemed to enjoy it too so I don't feel too bad.
I am however extremely happy with my new 2006 Dodge 3500 Lone Star edition 5.9 Cummins diesel. And my wife affectionately named ol blue.

Nothing for the 1941 Plymouth Sedan I bought at age 13 with money earned pumping gas and washing cars after school and Saturdays. It knocked so badly I feared it wouldn't make the four miles home. I cut the body off above the windshield and behind the front seat and removed the doors to make a "strip down". I drove the heck out of it for 30,000 miles dazzeling young girls and having a ball. I sold it for the $20 I paid for it and moved up.

It's not super flashy by any means but with 436rwhp and 445rwtq it's far more than enough for the street. So far my best time has been 12.88@115mph on hard street tires spinning like crazy

1970 Bronco 200 6cyl 3 in the tree was a State Park truck Dad bought and I cut the rear fenders and put the flares on did all the body work painted it in the driveway. Have owned 2 others since then 74 and a 76 would like to have all three back but I will own another I am on the hunt right now. What they want for them now I would have to pay a good bit to have either of them back in the condition they were in when I got rid of them.

My first car was a 1970 Plymouth Duster with the 2.5 liter engine (not the big .340)
I bought it used, 16 months old, 14,000 miles for 2200$ paid for it with money earned mowing lawns. This was summer of 71.
In the fall of 76 I traded it for a new full sized dodge pickup truck, and they gave me 1800$ for it.

All I'd put into that car was gas, oil, a battery and a starter. Never again will I own a car so long for so little.


To have it back now, in the condition I gave it up in? 4x what I got for it. 6-7,000 would be my top, although in theory it could be worth more than that.

It was a good little car, not all that sexy, didn't attract girls (or I repelled them) got decent gas mileage back when nothing got decent gas mileage. It showed me the adventure of the open road, the joys of independence.

Oh yes I know that no doubt, practice being the key. It's got pretty good shocks in it, just not coil-overs, tubular K-member, subframe conectors, caster camber plates, upper and lower rear control arms etc. when I went to the track it was my first time, since then I've put a 9in rear in the car and need to put torque box reinforcements in so they don't get ripped out with slicks. But alas I'm getting off target of this thread.
