I know lots of folks on this forum have small, home shop lathes. I recently converted the carriage feed on my JET 12 X 36 to DC variable speed drive. An AWESOME modification once in use!

It takes lots of pictures and bandwidth to explain so I wrote an article about it and posted it on my web site.

Hope you enjoy it!

Roy: I have been running a 90VDC 1HP motor on my old Bridgeport since 1985. it runs on 110VAC and is completely variable speed from 0-3000 rpms using the step pulleys and back gears.

I once twisted a 1" pipe tap off in a hole with it in bottom gear and the motor running full speed.

My machine also has a auto reverse function that I can set up limit switches on the quill and the machine will run and auto reverse between the two switches. I use this function for tapping large amounts of holes either thru holes or blind holes.

It has been a valuable machine.

I was in my garage back then and all I had was 110 V power.
