View Full Version : Ideas for an Adjustable SMLE Charger Bridge Sight?

I'm wanting to make one with both windage and elevation field adjustment. It needs to be robust as it will be on a hunting rifle. Any ideas?

mauser made a peep sight that fastened to the bolt stop.
it would not be hard to make in fact i mite try one. it is in the book of mauser bolt rifles by olson.

But thinking about it - you could just put a bridge across the slot screwed into each side
and then attach a short chunk of weaver scope base (picatinny rail) and put any AR BUIS
on it.

or airgun sight...

Or conversely just put a thick enough bridge to dove tail in any other sight.

Any reason your not going with the sight that goes on the end of the bolt?

Any reason your not going with the sight that goes on the end of the bolt?Well, the charger bridge is there already just waiting to find a purpose. They're great for scope mount rails. The cocking piece on the other hand has double slop and is rather small.

This idea would solve the elevation question.

All that is left is the windage adjustment.

That airgun sight is along the lines of what I'm looking for, thanks.

Is it for a hunting load? How adjustable would you want it as once a load is sorted and the sight is set it shouldn't need adjusting at all. The higher you have the rear sight the higher you will have to have the front sight. I have made a aperture sights for the MK l* actions using bases I make to sit in the lobbing sight recess that the aperture arm screws to and have a MK lll action that I will build something on and for that I would make a u shaped piece that would fit over and into the charger bridge clip recess that would locate it and with the aperture temporarily set on the top to check shot fall it could then be fixed to suit. The front sight is somewhat adjustable so a good (low) sight picture could be had with a suitable point of impact/zero.
On the other hand something similar to this on my MK l* might be - could be (??)made to work off the safety cover plate with longer screws to hold it all together. I have to tweak the aperture to tip it forward a little and height is adjusted by slooting where the screw holds it to the rifle and the windage is slightly compensated for by bending the arm or with washers under either end of the arm attachment screws. Set up for dead centre they have been very close to windage correct with almost no tweaking needed. This is the second one I have made for the Enfield and have done a couple of similar ones for the martini action

That looks good. I fitted a scope base on my MkI* by soldering a bridge to the flat sides in front of the butt socket and onto the ring. Something like that would work a treat for a rear peep sight.

I think I would need a fair amount of adjustment because the chances of settling on only one load are small. Mind you, I built a sporter SMLE for a mate a long time ago that shot all and any ammo to the same POI. The one cast boolit fired through it was a full power load and hit point of aim. This gun isn't likely to be used with cast but paper patch maybe and those seem to shoot a different elevation.

I plan on keeping the sight profile as low as the charger bridge will allow. I then plan on a suppressor with the front sight mounted on the suppressor attachment or right behind it. I might end up using the original front sight moved back.

I did this nearly forty years ago and it is still holding. No reason why it shouldn't, the soldered area is quite large. I made it high enough for the bolt head to pass under. the rifle has a sporter stock so cheek weld is good for the high scope mount. I also fitted an SMLE trigger to it. Much better!

The suggestion to use a scope base dovetail has given me an idea. I could angle the dovetail to give the sight elevation adjustment. A compound dovetail might be the answer.
