first off.
this is the hunting rifle, not the machine gun.

okay, so i have a browning 30-06 that i want to have rebored to .35 whelen.
i plan to shoot 250 grain j-words, maybe as light as 225's,
what should i go with as far as twist rate, and number of lands and groves?

i know the 3 grove is an option, and thats cool, just for the fact that its only a 3 grove.
anyway, what do you guys recomend??

Do you have a smith lined up to do the work? If not, contact Jess at www.35caliber.com (http://www.35caliber.com) and see if he can do it. He lists converting the Remington autos to 35 Whelen on his website, and the Browning auto uses a similar mechanism to the Remington.

.

I would first communicate with Jes, about the optimal twist rate, and if he can handle it, for you needs.

My intention is to send it to Jess.

I love my BAR 30-06. It is definitely my main hunting squeeze and a fine rifle!

Good luck on your project.

OH boy!! I will follow this. This is a conversion i've thought of trying if i could find a used Browning at a good enough deal. My whelen is an Encore and i absolutely love that caliber.I've never seen a BAR fail to shoot well.
Hope you give a report once you get it back.

i absolutly will report when i get it back and have it shooting.
i do not intend to use it as a regular cast boolit shooter.

i hope is to shot 250 grain J-words, maybe 225's

i got it as a gun for gun smithing school about 2 years ago, i paid $450 for it, and needs nothing but some refinishing on the wood, and a good scope.

what do you guys think of the leupold VX3-L's ??
the ones with the cut out in the bottom of the glass, so the scope can be mounted lower.
im thinking of the 3.5-10x56

Andrew, it sounds like a great conversion. I know someone that has a Win 94 bored out to .38-55. He is one happy camper!

Haven't tried that specific model but sounds like a good idea for low mounting which is a good thing imo. Leupolds are all i use, so yea...their always a good choice!

.........................................

Okay, I'll be the fly in the ointment then.

Why not the .338-06?

Better J-word options, higher SAMMI pressures ..... flatter trajectory. Some good cast boolit options but not as many as the "35's"

I have a barrel in it for Savage bolt guns and the Lee .338 mold works suprisingly well.

BRP designed some real humdingers ...... I think NOE took them up.

It's a grand cartridge!

Best regards and good shooting!
