I'm pulling bullets from some 6mm Remington rounds (hand-loaded in the 70s)
Which claim to have 4064. The bullets have been mostly 100 grain ( a couple 90s), the charges between 37-39 grains, which is consistent with a moderate/hot 6mm charge of 4064 for that boolit. I am not mixing the powders from case to case, in the event that there's another powder in the mix. Visually, it all looks like the same extruded powder.

I would like to convert each individual charge to a round of 7.62x54R with a NOE 316299 (weight approx. 218 gr.). I like to use Dacron filler where appropriate. An entry-level jax charge for a 220 grainer is over 37 gr. 4064. I currently have 5 loaded on my bench with 37 grains of salvaged powder, and a tuft of dacron. I think this may be too high, due to leading rather than pressure. There exists no 6mm charge for this weight bullet that exceeds a low charge of the same powder for 7.62x54R.

Larry, if you can weigh in I'd be grateful–I'm reading about much lower charges of 4064 in this configuration, 24-27 grains. That seems to me to require a pretty large tuft of Dacron to take up the space, but I have no interest in scrubbing lead for days. Even less interest in blowing up my gun, of course.

Is the charge too high? If I go way down to 24-27 grains, will I need 2-3 grains of Dacron to fill the space? Forget the whole thing and toss the old powder?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

You sound as your not sure of the powder. With that being said you would be a fool to just guess at a load with a unknown powder

I'm confident that this is 4064, with possibly a case of 3031. That's why I'm not mixing the cases.

If you are sure it is 4064, I would start at 31 grs and go up to 35 grs. with the Dacron. Somewhere in the middle I feel you will find a good load. Just be careful of the filler.

I will take those up into the woods now and report back.
Have been through Clinton. Beautiful fountain there by the river.

All went fine. 31 gr was 1600 fps, the other two (32 & 33 grains) triggered errors on the chrony in the rain. two bullseyes at 50 yds, one high. Thanks for your help tomme boy.

Make fertilizer for the garden or lawn with the pulled powder.

Then it is not the waste of throwing out at the dump.

Unless the powder is from the can identified it came from THROW it OUT!!!!

Powder is very cheap versus surgery or eye transplants.

I will completely agree with Geezer and Hatch in principal. Never take risks with unknown powders.
Don't do what I did.
