Only ~4%/year? Now figure what it really is, as the POTUS can (like Clinton) change what is counted in the inflation index.
Then add the treasury creating funds to pay the interest on the national debt. IIRC, Clinton took autos, fuel & homes out. A 1970 $5200 4 door with auto & A/C is now $29205 @ 4%. Actual list is now closer to $40K, ~5%. 28K Texas house is now 240K. Both inflation or deflation is actually BAD for us. Just makes $$ for the bankers, according to Keynesian policy, which states money is only created by charging interest on loans. Only benefit to the population is that cost of goods (same quality) goes down and quantity produced increases. Government numbers show the opposite is happening. So really, government numbers mean nothing except as related to the amount of currency that can be printed (in circulation). Remember, we are no longer on the silver or gold standard, thanks to Democrats. Gov. spent more than Ft. Knox held so Republican Pres. had to declare insovency or take us of the standard. Same thing that is happening to the Euro.

www.shadowstats.com is great for accurate inflation and unemployment rates. Inflation is running just under 10% using the 1980 formula before they started leaving out the things we need like food
