How many magazines do you have for your .22 auto pistol or rifle?

After a lot of plinking with one or two mags for my Ruger 10/22 rifle and Mk 1 pistol I've come to realize that constant breaks to reload are sucking some of the fun out of my shooting. I have started to mag up! And am now wondering whats the best amount of magazines for the most fun plinking. Of course the answer is easy, as many as I can get. The flaw is that mags are not cheap and at 20, 30 or more bucks apiece, It can get to be quite an investment in a very short time. A compromise is needed.

I'm thinking the best balance between cost and fun is 5 mags for a total of 50 or so rounds. With the one provided with the gun and 4 extras bought for under a hundred bucks I think I can significantly increase the fun of plinking and at the same time not break the bank.

So anyway, what say all the other plinkers in the Rimfire forum? How many magazines are you happy with?

Although for most of my 22's I have a half a dozen or so.

Wow! that's incredible! The heck with the money, I want more! And, as too many things says, 10/22 standard mags are cheap at 12 bucks! jay

To be fair, I would really only recommend the Ruger BX25's and the Butler Creek Steel lipped mags to someone looking to buy high capacity mags. The TI mags are nice, but too spendy compared to the BX25's. Same with the bingham mags and adapter.

Ammo goes quickly at 800+ RPM, and back when .22 ammo was available, I was shooting it like it was going out of style.

Little did I know it actually would.

Having a bunch of mags meant I could load at home, go to the range and blast away without having to reload there.

i consider 3 as a bare minimum number of magazines. more is nice, but it depends on your budget.

I prefer to plink with single shot firearms or revolvers. Particularly any plinking that involves kids. My daughters learned to shoot with a Contender Carbine and an 1885 low wall. The rifles they prefer now are side lock muzzleloaders.

I do have four magazines for a Ruger MKI and three for a bolt action Anschutz. More than enough for any stage of competition I might use them in, most often 1/5 scale metallic silhouette.

Well , lemme think now . I got one for the T-bolt , two for the Kimber 82 and ten or more for the 10-22 so I think NoZombies wins !! ;-)

Really though five or six is a good number for plinking or if you are concentrating on every shot . Taking a short break to load a few mags is probably a good thing .

Two for the 22s because they are just range guns. I don't mind the break to load them since they're easy to load.

Back in the day, when I was in pistol League, most events required 4 mags.
so my answer is 5, as it's good to have a spare.

Two magazines for rifles, only because one magazine may become damaged. I keep my spare mag for my Savage bolt action inside the hollow butt stock.

I have an Uzi in 22 lr that takes 20 rounders. I have 5 of the 20 rounders so I can pre- load 100 rounds before having to stop and fill mags. My sons and especially my Grandsons have a ball with the Uzi, I also have several 10/22's and 3 M77/22's so I keep more than a few extra mags for them. Both the 10 rounders and a handfull of the BX 25's. For my Ruger semis I keep 3-4 mags for each one. I have 2 of the GSG 1911's in 22 lr. Each with 3-4 mags also. It's a good thing I have a good supply of 22 ammo on hand, considering how much we shoot them and how fun they are. [smilie=s:

I have 3 magazines for the Ruger MKIII 22/45 that I bought for the Grandkids, I keep 3 10-22 mags on hand for my son's Ruger and 7 mags for my Grandson's Marlin 995 (was my son's 14th B-Day Present & is now his 12 year old son's). My only other .22 is a Nylon 66 that is tube fed (my 16th B-Day Present).

FWIW, for SWMBO's Glock 26 I have 12 Magazines, for her Glock 19 I have 8 & for my old KCSO issued Model 59 S&W I have 5. Can't never have too many magazines, kinda like too much ammo .... [smilie=s:

I have several mags for most of my 22s but usually don't even carry a spare. I shoot to hit things not just to make noise and if I can't hit it with one mag full I need to figure out what's wrong and fix it as lots more rounds usually won't. The kids have been taught the same and the grand kids will be as well. Once you have quit trying to make each bullet hit a certain target you are IMHO wasting ammo. Right now "too much" 22lr is really difficult to collect so rapid fire to hear the gun go bang won't happen with my ammo supply. I think it's time for them to learn all about a 32cal flintlock. They can rapid fire that all they want.

Well I have the pair of original 10 round mag's, I found a small plastic piece that lets them become one unit, back to back. Cost me about 5 $. Instructions recomended glueing, but I had to use my bench vise to finish pushing them into place, so I didn't bother with glue.

This is my favorite setup actually. Knuckle bump the extended mag release, catch the mag, flip it, insert it, pull the action back, release and we are back in business.

I also have a pair of the ruger BX 25 round mags. Hard to remember to slow down, let the barrel cool with these.

And then I have a pair of off brand 25 round mags, these always manage to fail to feed at least once, but slowing down is again in my opinion, a good idea.

And for all those who say you can't shoot out a barrel in a .22 I have to ask this question.

Why is it those who believe that shoot "patterns" at 100 yards 6", 12" 18". Where my barrel shoots 1" groups?
Same rifle, same everything, except the guy on the trigger.

I am in the camp that doesn't shoot fast enough to need extra mags. lol The only two I have that even takes mags is the 10/22 of the wifes, and the browning t-bolt. For 36 years, the original and 1 extra stock 10 rounder has worked well for the 10/22, and the t-bolt came with an extra that stores in the stock. I tried one of the 25 round mags of a friends for the 10/22, it wasn't for me, and I never liked a mag hanging out of the bottom anyway, just my preference.

I bought four 25 round mags for $5 each at Wally World just before the big mag panic. Once that began, I took them to a gun show and sold them to a dealer for $40 each, then used that $s to help buy a Ruger 338Mag that was a mere $400 as this was before the big gun price runup. Never saw the dealer again at gun shows. I am not a fan of the banana mags protruding from the bottom of an otherwise svelte gun, though.

At least 6 mag's per handgun or Semi-Auto Rifle - at least two to three for manual bolt actions.
One thing to consider is what happens if the magazine falls out of your firearm when your
out walking. I have had it happen and was fortunate enough to find it on the return trip back to the car. But's that why I say two or three for any that take a magazine.

One thing that I have found quite useful is magazine loaders

I forgot I have a savage rimfire that also requires mags. I didn't think about it because I have never even loaded it, I just bought it because it is a left hand bolt. This thread reminded me of two things. I should shoot this thing, and I need to get a spare mag for it. lol I try to keep one spare mag for my centerfires that require them too.

I have 3 for my 22/45 and 4 -10rd and 3-25rd. for my 10-22, never need more than 2 at the range. If I'm ground squirrel shooting, can't carry enough:bigsmyl2:
