View Full Version : What are you carrying?

Just curious as to what other people here are packing. I have settled on an officer 1911, glock 23, and a j frame. I like knowing that there is a lot of energy behind the 40 with my glock 23, the 1911 is a bit smaller when my pants feel a bit tighter that day, and the j frame is for a quick run to the convenience store. Please no caliber wars. I carry a 40 for many reasons, to include ease of reloading, and the lee 145 swc feeds better than the 105 swc.

Does the bigger slide seem to be too much on ocassion? I was considering a glock 30, but even the 23 slide is big compared to a 1911.

Sig P290RS-EDC 9mm or Ruger LCP .380 depending on how I'm dressed ;-)
Very rarely do I wear something other than a t shirt and jeans. I took the wife out, in a nice polo and slacks, and I just could not conceal my OACP or g23, got stuck with the j frame. No complaints though, they are great revolvers.l, and I don't feel undergunned with one.

Does the bigger slide seem to be too much on ocassion? I was considering a glock 30, but even the 23 slide is big compared to a 1911.

As stated above a GOOD belt and a GOOD holster can make a world of difference. I use a Crossbreed SuperTuck. The weight isn't bad, but takes a bit to get used to (I carry 135 grain Noslers HPs, not 180 grain HPs which helps with weight). The width of the slide for me, is a non-issue. Dimensionally, it feels the same as carrying my Springfield SubCompact 9 (also in a Crossbreed ST). Of course the Glock weighs a bit more. I carry in the 4-4:30 position.

My everyday routine is very rough on my carry gun. I manage a nursery (trees, plants, etc). My day consists of operating Bobcat skidloaders, loading plants and trees, selling to customers, and just general labor around the sales yard. Conditions can be very dusty, muddy, dirty...you get the point. I work outside all the time. The Glock 29 is very comfortable and I forget it is even there. It conceals very well, even with the pierce pinky extension.

I bought my dad a Glock 30 and a Crossbreed holster too. He is a retired LEO that is used to carrying a S&W 9mm in his waistband with no holster (he is old school). He really likes the G30 and the Crossbreed holster.

I also carried the G29 in my waistband for a long time. Believe it or not it is very comfortable too.

Man, that was long-winded....OP, sorry about the thread diversion.

Usually a Colt Commander, but on those quick trips I take the J-frame airweight. I also rotate a Glock 21 Gen 4 into my winter wardrobe, and on occasion in warm weather if I'm rocking the Hawaiian shirt. The Glock 21 is very comforting and surprisingly not that hard to carry concealed even under lighter clothing. The j-frame disappears in the pocket, and the Commander conceals like nobody's business.

A very good belt and holster are paramount to good concealed carry. I also carry all day when I am home as well and this has taught me how to sit and move without printing, shirt riding up, etc.

Body carry is LCR 38 special +p. Used to carry sp101 2.25 357 with beautiful grips and IBOK'd to be butter smooth. Going to sell it and buy a second LCR just due to the weight reduction. The sp101 is way more fun to shoot, but it kind of pulls my pants down as a carry gun. My truck gun is SR1911. My home gun is Remington 870 youth with 3" #5 turkey loads.

Farmer&shooter
12-24-2014, 02:35 AM
I also think the Commander .45 QACP is the one to carry, mine is a Ruger1911 Commander. My woods, sagebrush, fourwheeler, dirt bike gun is a 3" S&W Model 60 Stainless +P .38 special with the adjustable sights. It shoots straighter than I can, and is so easy to carry you almost forget it is there. I took one of the East German police flap holsters (from e-Bay), removed the mag pouch, and made a full flap holster, with an extra flap snap for extra security. It is very lightweight, but really keeps the dust and weather out.

Math anomaly: If something can go back together two ways, but will only work one of those ways, you have a one in ten chance of getting it right the first time.

I carry a Sig P238 most of the time. In spite of years denying such a thing could ever happen, I have to dress professionally these days, and as a result, I'm a little more limited to my carry options.

A commander 1911 is my most carried choice but sometimes the back just doesn't like it and I rotate in a Bersa 45UC.

On days I am hunting it is usually a BH 41mag 6.5" on one hip and the full size 1911 on the other LOL. (so much for the bad back and lack of attention at the gas pumps)

I carry a full size Springfield Armory M1911A1 in .45ACP .
Sometimes I carry a nickle-plated Colt Combat Commander in .45ACP.

Now and then, I carry a taurus stainless DA revolver in .44Special with adjustable sights.

When I am hiking and/or hunting I may be carrying any of a couple dozen different DA and Sa revolvers in various calibers from Rugers to S&W to Colts to Dan Wessons to Ubertis. All depends on what my needs and desires are on a particular day.

It's not pleasant to shoot, that is no lie, but I practice with it enough every other week that I can hit a softball with it at 50 yards which is about all the practice with it my hand can take. Much more than that and it starts to feel like somebody hit my hand with a hammer.

My Ruger 2.25" .357 SP101 is always my back-up, and in my pocket now. The primary varies depending on where I am going, what I am doing, and just on mood, but is either a 5" Springfield 1911A1 Loaded .45, a 4" Ruger Security Six .357, or a Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt, with a Glock 23 thrown onto the mix from time to time. Me too. I also have a crimson trace lasergrip on mine.
Forgot to finish details...

Smith Shield 40 with Crimson Trace Laser. Carried in a Crossbreed Ankle holster when absolute concealment is critical, a pocket holster day to day, and a Wrights Leather Works Marshall OWB if wearing a coat or vest in town or on the rare occasion it accompanies me to the farm.

Since Phoenix is usually hot it's tough to conceal anything in t-shirt and shorts. Usually carry a Colt Mustang .380 in a Don Hume Pocket holster.
When camping either a Browning Hi-Power or Smith M58 .41 mag in bear country with Buffalo Bore hard cast loads.

For daily carry I pack a Glock 27 in a Desantis OWB holster or in an ankle holster in t-shirt weather. I don't like the ankle holster much but it's better than nothing when there ain't many places to conceal. In the field I pack whatever SA I'm hunting with that day.

Like many, it depends. If I can cover it, Colt Gold Cup 1911. If I need smaller, Colt 1903 in 32acp. My friends tell me I should put the 1903 in the safe and get a plastic carry gun, but what's the fun in that!

Daily carry Taurus TCP .380. Not because it is the best self defense gun in the world because it fits in a pocket and functions reliably and doesn't interfere with work. When dressed more heavily I often add a Ruger LCR .38 spl or .357. I've packed 9mms, 45s 10mms , 40s , ,357 and 44 mags and .22s upon occasion and still do -usually in the woods open carry.

For strong side I carry a custom McDougal and Associates Officers Model on my hip followed by a Rorhbaugh R9 weakside pocket carry.
For a quick trip, I may just carry a Rorhbaugh in each pocket.

In cold weather, if I'm wearing a jacket, I forgo the hip rig and carry an STI 1911 Ranger **in the inside pocket for strong side carry and a Rorhbaugh R9 in the weak side pants pocket.

When at home a Kel-Tec 380 rests in my lounge wear due to it's light weight.

**
this gun has a Commander slide on a Shorter than Officers frame. It fits ideally in the narrow, verticle jacket pocket.

It all depends on what I am up to or how I am dressed. More than anything else a Para P14-45 in an IWB or SOB holster backed by a DB380 in a pocket holster or occasionally a NAA 22LR mini revolver. While hunting I sometimes carry a Taurus Raging Bull snubby in 454 Casull loaded with 405 grain wdww lnswc boolits. All caliber 45 stuff is cast lead of course. 52 230 grain chunks of lead are hard to beat. The only downside is the extra weight on my trousers.

I'm an avid believer in the "If its comfortable to carry you will carry it all the time" so I always have my Colt 25 acp or a North American Arms 22 mag on me. They are not power house guns but they are always there if I should need them. I know several people will tell me that they don't have the power to be efective but I think if you put 5 rounds in the right place they will work.

For everyday pocket carry, I switched from a Kel-Tec P3AT to a Glock 42, both in .380ACP with 95gr. hollowpoints. The P3AT was more compact, but was ammo sensitive, and had a more pronounced kick. The little Glock will feed anything I've put in it with 100% reliability, has a more comfortable grip, and I can shoot it much more accurately.

I carry a Kahr P9 covert everywhere….it's small, light and dependable. Now if I go into injun territory I also carry a Nighthawk custom. It's a commander size 45 on a titanium frame…very light, very dependable and very holster worn. I also have a Wilson CQB with X300 at bedside ( duty weapon also). Most of the time an S&W M&P Bodyguard .380 (no laser) in a pocket holster. As long as I have pants on, I have it with me (balances the humongous Galaxy S5 Active my daughter gave me on the other side). Otherwise a Star PD or Glock 30, I'll probably carry them more often as I lose some more of the weight I put on this winter.

For a concealed gun, I've carried a little bit of everything over the years; too many to list. Always came back to the snubnose 38 Special. I finally settled on the hammerless, airweight, snubnose J-frame a long time ago and never looked back. It's a bit old school but it fills the requirements of a CCW well.

I like the Kahr design and if I were to go with a pistol over a revolver I would give the Kahr strong consideration (I had a couple and really liked them). Flat, simple, reliable. Kind of like a thin single stack Glock.

It's a little expensive and a bit exotic but the H&K P7 has a lot going for it. Very accurate, very slim, compact, safe and reliable. It would need to be finished in something a little tougher than bluing; maybe Robar NP3 ?
The P7M8 has a magazine release behind the trigger guard but for a dedicated CCW I would actually prefer a P7 or PSP with the heel magazine release, less chance of a mag becoming dislodged. It is far better to have one loaded magazine locked in the gun than to have the ability to rapidly change magazines. Not that mag changes are all that important in most real world encounters, but a heel type mag release can actually be operated rather efficiently with practice.

I really hope Remington can work the bugs out of the new R51. The concept is very promising. Rounded contours, light weight frame, compact design, cool operating system and a passive safety. I don't know if it will ever pan out but it's one of the more interesting designs to come along in a while. And yes, I did carry an old Remington model 51 for awhile .

Things I DON'T need in a carry gun: Hammer spurs, manual safeties, high magazine capacity, fat grips, adjustable sights and sharp edges.
Things I LIKE in a carry gun: Lightweight, rust resistant materials and finishes, simple operation, absolute reliability and compact design.

146936Here's the Speed Six. Barrel says 38spl but I changed it out for an extra 357 Mag cylinder that came with the gun when I bought it. It has been beat to ****, looked like it had been run over several times while laying on a gravel road. Once I got the 357 cylinder fitted in and working perfectly, I spent plenty of hours with 3 grades of scotchbrite pads fixing the finish of 95% of the nicks/scratches/etc.
I emailed Badger and asked if he could make a boot grip similar to the one they catalog for the GP100. He said no prob, just order the gp100 boot grip and make a note in the order that the grip is for the SS. I asked that he make the grip .20" thinner than the gp100 grip, so my wife can get a solid grip on it with her smaller hands. I did have some concern about the hammer pin falling out, but it's not going anywhere. Badger said if I had any problem with the pin, they'd cut me a new set of grips no problem.
Once I had the grips installed and the finish fixed up, I decided that it needed a night sight on the front. I ordered a XS Sight for the sp101/jframe from Amazon for around $60 shipped and took an hour or so fitting it perfectly into the groove and getting it pinned in. The sight came with a tube of red loctite to secure the sight, but with a 10yr lifespan, I just pinned it so I can replace as needed in the future. It's super secure and loctite would make no difference.
I really like the Security/Speed/Police Six series but I'm looking to buy the unfluted 6" GP100 for my next revolver purchase.
