What is the intended purpose of putting spacers in the shot column?

Shotgun reloading is all about proper stack height to get a good crimp. Change one item and the stack height is different and the crimp is off. Without a good crimp it can effect pressures.

It may act as a spreader insert. There are too many to help with the stack height.

Those are duplex and triplex loads---different shot sizes separated by those cork and card wads. It's not absolutely necessary, but some folks think this gives a better pattern to each of the different shot sizes by keeping them each in their own little shot column. These are high-end Italian hunting rounds, and they sure do look cool, especially with the clear hulls. I saw these online a while back and made some of my own; they're easy to make, and they do actually pattern well, so it's a fun little arts and crafts project!
