Forgive my ignorance, but what is that big brass thing through the buttstock of a Mauser and do I have to drill the center out of it to remove it?

Oh, and who has replacement front sights for the Mauser or do I have to file it for standard American dovevtail?

That "hole" is for taking the firing pin out of the shroud. It is basically a rivet .. nay a grommet! Like in a tarp.. if you drill the "peened" side you can remove the "center, and the off side disk will fall away!
[someone CRS! makes the replacement "tube] What is wrong w/ it? Sporter express has had front sights in the past... but if yer good I suppose you could "Bubba"about any sight blade into it.

I always wondered.

That is a lot of brass and work for the task.

Yes... But IIRC lots of em were used as "unit disks" also. Identifying ownership, and in the case of Swedes' condition as well!! Kind if a dual duty Thing.. for some.. Don't recall any data on Turks nor CZ's... MV
