I have a connection with a scrap dealer who handles the clean outs from a range that uses rubber tire as a back stop. The scrap is extremely clean. He is offering it at $0.60-lb and will buy back the remaining copper etc after I extract the lead. Is this a decent buy?

I think so, if it was me I'd buy a couple hundred lbs , melt it down and do some math for the exact cost. Then buy more:bigsmyl2:

Thanks. I have 4 5 gal buckets coming my way to the tune of about 750lbs. Scary part is he has 30,000lbs.

Thats a good price from a scrap yard. The only way I would be able to get cheaper than that would be to put a craigslist add and thats hit and miss

If the scrappier gives a decent value for the jackets, it's a good deal. I have given that for lead for years. Most of what I found was lead pipe, flashing, and X Ray shielding lead.

The scrap brass/copper should get you about $1.50 per pound. At least where I work it would.

When I smelt my range scrap I normally get around 80 lbs of good lead and 20 lbs of trash. If his willing to buy back the copper then youll be money ahead depending on how much his offering. USA scrap price on lead weights is .55/lbs which is the price I pay for my range scrap from the range.

Thats a fair price, but you need to do the math and calculate what your time is worth, and what it will cost you in smelting tools and propane. You can buy clean range lead ingots on the swapping and selling forum for $1.00 a pound shipped. So, ,60 cents a pound minus what you sell the jackets back to the yard for, plus you investment and time.

Most of us are 'do it yourselfers', but some don't have the equipment, time or the place to smelt.

Sounds almost too good to be true! In NYS lead ww's haven't been permitted for several years now, and many buckets of "lead wheel weights" at scrap yards have quite of bit of zinc or composite in them. To get alloy exclusively from a range -- albeit through a middleman -- wow! I wish I had such an opportunity. I'd surely buy as much as I could afford!
BEST!

I aleady have the set up from past smelts. Nice big cast iron pot and a big outdor areas to knock it out. I dont mnd the time because my job allows for it. As you said being a do it yourself there is a good deal of pride knockng it out in your own.

Since you already have the equipment and experience, that sounds like a decent price. I probably would load up on it at that price.
