Just how much improvement is possible in the .30-30, reaming it out to Ackley Improved? Has anyone actually chronographed one?

About 200 fps for 170's; 300 fps for 150's. Will still feed fine in lever guns. This from PO Ackley reference books. Just looked it up because I wanted to know too. ... felix

Personally, Art, I would not do it because of ignition purposes. It seems that boolits prefer the funneling effect. A way to really find out would be to make it a 35, increase the body to exactly match the 35 rem in capacity, and shoot them side-by-side. Now, that would be a fun project. Straight taper versus heavy slant. ... felix

And the proper way to do one is not just to ream it out....the barrel should be turned back one full turn....then chambered with an Ackley reamer.

Doesn't apply to rimmed cases.

Maybe RanchDog has had some time to work on his? I know that I have one and at first it seemed to be like a real good idea but without a chrono, I really can't say. I was shooting around 35 gr. of 4895 and the same amount of 4064 using a 173 gr. group buy bullet. A .35 definitely sounds more useful since I am already fat in the .30 cal dept.
