Hi everyone - new bloke here from Australia - I was rustproofing my boat trailer with a Valvoline product called Tectyl from a spray can and this stuff looks and smells the same as Lee liquid alox that i spread on bullets - so what's the go with this stuff? What exactly is alox and who has used Tectyl?

LLA is a cut Alox-606 using a high flashpoint mineral spirits as the solvent. It is produced by the Alox corporation and sold commercially in 5 gallon buckets or 55 gallon drums. It is a Calcium soap per the MSDS sheets but exact formulation is not released.

Tectyl represents the whole line of Valvoline rust and corrosion proofing products, so without knowing which one it is, it would be tough to say. The line includes both water based and solvent based products. From what I have been able to gather, It looks like Tectyl 506 is a similar product to a dramatically solvent cut 606. It is a calcium salt based product. I say this as 606 even in the most solvent cut form sold by alox would never run through an aerosol system. I've never played with tectyl's product, but it might make a quick alternative to Alox. It also might make a royal mess of a barrel. I think I'd start my testing on something I wasn't afraid to ruin/have to clean to death.

Give it a try. Shouldn't cause too much problem if it were to go bad. Keep your eyes open and check every few shots to keep undesireable results under control until you know how it works. Let us know, sounds like the next step in the LLA saga to me! (Now to find a real lube in aerosol form)

The commercial use for Alox 606-55 (= Lee Liquid Alox) is for rustproofing, eg car underbodies.
The 55 number signifies 55% of 606 and the balance 45% is mineral spirits (you can buy it in different "grades").

Try burning some and see what is left. Compare to your alox.

Hi All I to am an Aussie we can but Tectyl 506 but not the bulk alox. They look and smell the same have the same colour and consistency and in fact in comparison you would be hard pressed to tell one from the other, even so 4 liters of Tectyl will run you back $60 to $80 over here. Is there a chemist who can give us the lowdown comparison between the two.

Tectyl 506 active ingredient is calcium salt of oxidized petrolatum per the MSDS.
