Hey all,

Does anyone know the story about the differences in 358477 molds? The mold on the right has a more rounded nose, while the one on the left nose is straighter with less radius. Both are Lyman 358477's. Thanks Marc
124179 sorry for the repeat

There has always been visually significant differences in Lyman molds from different time periods.

Lyman says it is because different companies make the cherries.

I am guessing that the one on the right is an Ideal mould? If I am not mistaken, the one on the right is a traditional Keith type. Those are both sweet moulds, wish I owned either one. BTW, are there letters after the numbers? I have been trying to figure out what the letters mean.

The earlier molds dropped in the 150 gr. range, current catalog lists the number as being 158 gr. Mine is an older DC and drops soft, 9BHN, at 148 gr.

The Lyman web site lists the 358477 at 150 grains as of a few seconds ago.
My 358477 4 cavity mold is like the one on the right. It is marked Lyman not Ideal. The number is 358477A. It has the rounded nose and smaller lube groove
It drops at .360 and 152 grains using range scrap.
It works really well in my 357 when loaded in 38 special cases and sized to .358. Almost any powder charge shoots accurately with this boolit.

Thanks for the replys. The molds are both Lyman. The left one only says 358477 and 343. The right mold says 358477AX, 893 and GA on the left lower corner.

One of the things that does NO credit to Lyman is that over the years they have changed their moulds, sometimes drastically, to no purpose and given them the same number. It's downright frustrating. Couple that with "less than stellar" customer service and I tend to consider other brands these days. My preference is Mihec, Noe, and while I have no Accurate moulds, I would put them in the top category based on others reports.

Understand, I have a number of FINE Lyman moulds as well as Saeco, H&G, that I treasure and use, but new ones, probably not Lyman. Lee's are not my first choice, but again, I have several Lee moulds that I use regularly including a couple of group buys built by Lee.

Just a thought or two...
