Mike,

In addition to the 93-96 Mausers some of the Turkish Mausers have a small ring thread een though they are large ring model 98's.

I've thought about this. I'd find a ratty '93 or '95 and use it.

Mk42gunner :

According to my gunsmith in Golden, CO......he says that " most " of the Turks are small ring thread, but some of them are large ring thread.

No real way of knowing on a Turk until you check them internally and confirm their thread size.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi mike,

I know I had another link that showed pictures and it was either an excerpt from a book or a Brownell's catalog page but can't find it now. this one is a pretty good one. I saw a guy that had one of those little rifles and it was pretty cool.

...............Small ring Mausers, not accurate to all countries, but the most common:
1891 Argentines, Peruvians & one other I dis-recall. External single stack magazine. Superb rifles.

1893: Spanish. Also made for others. Your generic small ring. Early ones had square chin bolts and the actions were milled for them.

1894: Brazilian. Basicly a small ring but designed for the early square chin boltface. Actions were ALL milled for them. Made by FN and Loewe. Will work with a normal round bolt. It's an oddity as it has a solid left receiver wall. No thumb cut.

1894 Swede: Your generic 1893 with the Swedish touchs. Odd cocking piece mainly.

1895: Best known as the Chilean Mauser, but some went to S. Africa also. Your generic 1893 with the exception of a vestigal "Lug" on the right side of the tang. The bolt root drops in front of it. If it's a safety lug it's a sad example. Some think it's to help stabilize the bolt, ie: take up some of that designed in slop Mauser bolts have when full open.

1896: Swede again. Your generic 1893. Exactly the same as the 1894 Swede.

Turks: Turks used what they could find, buy, or what was given to them, leftover, or left behind. All Turkish built mauser actions are small ring in their barrel threads, but appear to be 1898 type large rings.

If it has stamped on it's receiever ring:
T-C
AS-fA
ANKARA
K.Kale

It is a Turkish built Mauser. M98 looking but threaded for a small ring barrel shank.

If it's stamped:
T-C
AS-FA
ANKARA

Then it is a true 1898 Large ring Mauser. Either purchased from the Czech's or an Imperial German action. You may find these with Turkish made bolts, and you may find Turkish made actions with Czech or German bolts (and possibly other parts). The Turk actions also differ slightly in the length of the receiver ring.

My 7.62x39 Built on a small ring Mauser action. An 1894 Brazilian made by FN.

Notice there is no thumb cut in the left action wall. Otherwise it is a pure early type 1893 small ring milled for the square chinned boltface.

Very concise Buckshot! But don't forget the extremely economical turk 93's now available!! I have heard tell that they are mostly reworked DWM receivers.. but certainly can;t trace the lineage of mine!! Just Turked! MV

This guy has one already built, Century M94, I think . He's only open on Friday and Saturday. Can't remember the price.

There were also some small ring versions of the 98 action. The Mexican 1910, 1924 and 1936 and the Yugoslav mod 24 actions are notable examples and are also "short actions". The Czech G33/40 and some early German carbines, the 98a, are small ring full length 98 Mauser actions.. Of these rifles only the G33/40 used the small diameter shank of the earlier model rifles.

My VZ33 was small ring. I know because I bought a large ring Ramline stock and it was too big.

Some of the Turk M98's and all the M93's are small ring .

I prefer the M98 but the M93is strong enough for 7.62 x 39 .

You used to be able to find Spanish Guardia rifles in 7.62 CETME for around $ 100 . Ought to be strong enough for 7.62 x 39 .

God bless
