I've been tinkering with the 358429 and 4756 in 38 special cases and found something interesting....

firstly, the front driving band/shoulder on this mold is undersized to about .3545 or .355 and the base just made .356--ali tape got me to .358 base and middle band. This bullet , I thought had 3 full size driving bands, but this model only has 2 and a shoulder. My assumption is the front band was reduced to allow the bullet to be seated into .357 brass and fit tight throats. Of 4 357's , an old Blackhawk, a 7 shot Taurus snub, a new vaquero and a GP100, the gp 100 is the only cylinder which will allow crimping into the crimp groove. all the others it hangs out and binds. These would require crimping over the front shoulder. The bullet is also light from WW-- lubed it weighs 166-167 grains-- my guess is the weight loss comes from the shrunken front band..
Loaded in 38 special cases I get an OAL of 1.515 and crimp firmly with a standard pistol primer
I loaded up 6 over 7.0 grains of 4756 and fired over a chrono from 10 feet
The low was 1050 ish and the high was 1085 ish-- the ES was around 32 and the SD was 16.2 ( I did it this am before I left and did not right down the exact numbers)
7.5 grains got me essentially the EXACT same results, SD and ES....
My goal was an accurate 170 grain friendly to fire but potent 38/44 load around the 1050 fps mark... Got that...
But why does .5 grains of powder just make more blast? would a magnum primer make up the difference? or does the 4 inch bbl lack the length to burn the powder and provide gains... is 7.0 or maybe 7.1-7.2 the point of diminishing return in that bbl length?
Also fired 6 of the 358429 in 357 Magnum cases over 16.0 of W269-- awful , ranging from a blasty 989 to a booming 1105---- I think I should have followed directions and bought some magnum SP primers before I loaded 296/H110... I'm not getting good, consistent ignition.
I'm getting zero leading sized (ok "unsized") at .358 ACWW with a lube of 40%beeswax 40% lard 10% paraffin and a 1/2 bottle of LLA...
Anybody have experience with the 358429 and 4756 in a 4 inch bbl?
Jason
