i anneal rimfire jackets in a lee melting pot with a aluminum lid and a bi-metal type casting thermometer to tell me when the temp is 1100 degrees. annealed brass has the dark tarnished look that i want to get rid of. tumbling in walnut media helps some, a ultrasonic bath in lemi-shine helps some too but the brass is still tarnished. am i annealing too high a temp or something wrong? has anyone tumbled rimfire brass with stainless pins? i make 35 cal f/n rifle boolits for a 35 remington in a c/h 2 die swaging set, works great but i have the same issue with 9mm brass after i anneal it in preperation to swage down for 35 cal jackets. tried using some smallish ceramic polishing media from harbor freight but almost every piece of brass had a ceramic stone jammed/wedged tightly inside the brass. don't know if the same issue would happen with stainless pins and rimfire brass. no reason to re-invent the wheel so to speak if someone else has already been down this road. your help would be appreciated. thanks.....................tenx

I use the pins before annealing then again afterwards, and again at the end.
I clean the swage lube off before the final wet tumble, then roll them again in corn cob with a little nu-finish to help them keep that nice finish.

the pins are the only efficient, clean way I have found to get the anneal tarnish off the brass, and I have tried a bunch of different stuff including rock tumbling media and polish.

^^^ 1+ Only thing I do differently is I use a vibe tumbler dedicated for polishing finished product. Listen to runfiverun you wont go wrong.

I still use a torch to anneal 40 S&W for .44 bullets. It leaves a black spot where the flame comes in contact with the brass. I have found that cooking them in a crock pot with a couple caps full of citric acid and water for 2 to 3 hours and then an overnight in the vibratory tumbler does the trick.

knowing that someone else is cleaning with ss pins and they don't create an issue getting jammed up tightly inside the rimfire case is good enough for me. i have a pm out to purchase 5 ibs from a cast boolit vendor on this site. will go this route. thanks..........tenx

My 2 cents. Finished bullets tumbling in my vibration tumbler for about 2 hours with a bit of citric acid and dish washer cleaner.
The magic is in ceramic cleaning media ;-)

If it help any, when I tumble brass with stainless media I use 1 TBL Armor All car wash and wax and 1tsp of lemishine. The wax keeps the brass shiny for along time. I tumbled my finish bullets with this for an hour with nice results also.

Ultrasonic cleaner and Lemishine. No need to re-anneal like when using pins.

Why would re-anneal? Never had to. 1st Clean to eliminate damage to dies (derim) from dirt and debris , anneal 2nd clean to remove scale, swage, 3rd cleaning to remove lube and polish finished product.
