Check with Pacific tool and gage ( 541 ) 826-5808
They make great reamers

formed cases. Seems like a dandy cartridge to plink, play, and just maybe slay a deer.

I have never tested it, but I bet case capacity is about the same as the 30 Herrett.

Oh, almost forgot

What did you use make dies, Do you think this would shoot a 180 gr. cast bullet around 2,000 FPS, Thanks

Smokemjoe, I don't think you are going to get 2000 out of a 180 in that cartridge without very high pressure, even assuming you are talking about a rifle rather than a handgun. You should be able to get that with a 150 grainer, I would think. My experience is with a couple of obscure silhouette cartridges, the 7mm supermag and the .270 Maximum. Both are based on the .357 max case. Case capacity is less than the TC/U cartridges. I think by the time you neck it down, presuming a neck of useful length, you are going to be short on case volume.

Had one made years ago. Used a neck length similar to the 30-30. Will see if I can find my data. Chambered a MOA for use in IHMSA unlimited. Worked very well, but ended going with the 32-20. Thought about using it at the Coors matches.

Jim Rock.

He had them made for the guns he produced in the chambering.

My plan was to rechamber my Martini to that cartridge, but I balked at the 100 bucks (at that time) for a custom reamer.

I would be willing to bet that it won't get a 180 grainer to 2000 fps, but I could be wrong . . . Sure would NOT be the first time I was wrong.

I have a .30-.357 Paxton reamer that I did
a .30 carbine Ruger in. (Necked down .357 Mag.)

A little short for what your looking for.

Fun cartridge - Hope to make a barrel for a Stevens
44 1/2 single shot.

Smokemjoe, no need to reinvent the wheel so to speak. Just use a 30x221 die and a reamer ran in a bit longer. You can make the neck as long or as short as you want for the most part. There was a thread around here some place on basicly a 30x357 mag. You will end up with a lot more powder space than the mag. The 7supermag is a more common chambering than what you are looking at.
As mentioned above the 30-20 is a some what easier alternative. With that being said, the new 327 with a 308 bore would be somthing to look at.

I have a couple 30 Herrett contender barrels, as well as a 30-20. I find myself shooting the 30-20 more than the others. The 30-20 will push a 170 grain cast bullet to about 1100 fps, which is a nice speed for plain base bullets.

Carson Reece of Lebanon Missouri has his own 30 caliber cartridge base off the 357 Magnum called the 30 Reece or 30/357 Magnum. Case has 0.004 taper, 35 degree shoulder & .295 neck length. Cases are trimmed to 1.165". Hornady dies are only $45 from him. He also had Hornady make the custom brass which sells for $20/100 along with a reloading manual for various bullet weights and barrel lengths. Not a bad price for a wildcat.

You could get a set of dies from him and size 357 Maximum cases or possibly see if Hornady could run the reamer that cut the dies up further to make a 30/357 Maximum.

Call Hornady and ask for Lonnie Humel. He is the custom die specialist at Hornady.

Here is one I did earlier . 357 Max down to .30 . In a Martini Cadet action I get about 2000 fps with the 160 grn CBE shown . I have not tried any other bullet at this time .

Another option would be to trim a new 357 maximum case to 1.36" and then size it with 300 Whisper die. This would give you a rimmed version of the 300 Whisper.
