I found a brick of 1950s era Herters LR primers in my upper cabinet, and decided to try them in 50 rounds of 30x39 cases. I had to change out my shell holder to get a precise fit, they are just a wee bit larger than CCI or Remingtons. I am going to run loads of 844, bulk H-335.

Friday I found out that a cast iron mold sweats in Florida, poured a ladle full in and it exploded, pulled the ladle back and spilt it on my foot, 3rd degree burns on my foot see burn center Monday to see if I need graphs and where we proceed in treatments. Be careful out there!

Wow what a sobering story. I have not considered such an unanticipated disaster and the for site of having the water ready speaks volumes.

I have been slowly building in an exhaust fan which I hope will allow for powder coating in the reload room. Been busy with Alaska summer and blown out shoulder. Need to test about 100 556 loads before doing a production run.

In FL you put implements on the alloy to heat, when you light off or switch on. Let the humidity get gone from the metal. Good tme to tell you, right.

When I sold my house in Navarre, FL it still had 100 pounds of lead imbedded in the bricks, trees, on the roof, etc. Learned to dry everything used in the melt in FL, by heat, first, the hard way.

what did i do in the reloading today?...i unboxed my new Lyman 8 station turret press to mount to my bench only to find out
the press & handle were the only things in the box. no hardware, no priming equipment, no turret handle.

wow, what a disappointment! quality control no so good. called where i purchased. they are going to contact Lyman

& they are supposed to get a hold of me on Monday. price was not an issue, maybe should have bought the T-7.

First time I got a blob of molten lead on me, my reaction was to 'wipe it off' err SMEAR it... I've got a good scar... This is an excellent idea and just remember to stay calm and use that water.

My reloading bench is full of a disassembled 1911 that is 99.9% complete... But today I moved everything a bit and put together 100 45 ACP with the MP 452-200 mold with the penta-point cast in very nice 25:1 lead on top of some AA#2. This load got me an ES of 9 and a SD of 3.6 at 890 fps AND an excellent 5 shot group at 25 yards...

loaded up 51 rounds of 7.62x54 R using noe 314-210-rn mold with 11.5 grains of unique. if these work like there supposed to i’m going to enter into the last month of military postal shoot with the CBA.

also won an auction on gun broker for 85 pcs of once shot 7.62x54r brass boxer cases off of gun broker. every piece of brass i own for the mosin is in the enclosed photo.

the next project/skill i need to learn is case annealing. i’m going to just try and use the deep well socket method.

About half of my career was spent around large machine tools that could crush you or tear you apart if they got the chance. Secret to survival was: never lose your fear of them. Good attitude to have around molten lead, too.

project i started almost 6 yrs ago before i took a break from reloading. finally finishing it. loaded 48 boolets for load development since i switched the powder from unique to bulls eye. these are from a lee 6 banger mold .356-120-TC-TL mold.

I used stamina powder coat and did the shake and bake method. I also make bass jigs so i had a bunch of black laying around. 12 rounds each of bullseye from 3.5-4.1 grains.

boolets we’re sized to .357 in a lee push through sizer than powder coated. i want to see if the extra thickness from powder coat helps get rid of what tiny bit of leading i’m getting a tiny bit of lead streaks in my SR9E but, the leading is not horrible. i could live with it untill i get a better mold. i know some people have issues with this mold ( lee dosent even make it any more). originally from what i was told it was produced to make .38 special boolets. i didn’t know that when i was starting out casting and bought the mold it https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230706/911932c41c1604466b7b6bc6f4025c34.jpg

After casting some 243 boolits from a new-to-me mold, I GC'd them and ran them through the lubesizer. Honestly it's been a while since I've used the lubesizer...and forgot how much I like the SL68B lube...it takes so little pressure to push through the die into the lube grooves, so no leaking, even through a modified H&I die, that typically leaks with other lubes.

I drilled and tapped a 1956 Spanish 98 Mauser action and installed a H&R model 300 22-250 barrel on it.
The plan is for a nice “Walking Varminter”.
I’m also setting up “Stick”(ugly 6.5 Swedish/ Spanish rifle) for scope use also.
Work for a bit, then retreat to the cool house!

I'm still in planning stages. I shouldn't need a filler. I don't plan to use a filler for the first test loads, but if I don't have success, maybe I'll investigate that or maybe move to a different powder. I am only using it cuz I have a bunch of Blue Dot [it was my goto powder for 44 mag, until I had some issues), so I don't use it for revolver loads anymore...but have heard it can work well in reduced castboolit rifle loads.

This morning I spent 3 hours casting 148 gr, RN plain base .38s. I discovered last week that I had more empty brass than I had pills to fill them. I can only do this work in the mornings due to the high temps here, since I work in the garage. Tomorrow I hope to get them PCed. Between yard work and putting up blueberries in the freezer, I'm finding it hard to get time for reloading and even less time for the range! Good thing I'm retired. I wouldn't have any time to work!

Started with a full pot and ended up with a bunch of 44 mag. powder coated loaded ammo by the end of the day.

Piggyback needed to be changed from 38, think I could remember where the large primer holder was. That took a while.

Then after test firing, recording the velocity, labeling, and finally looking for place to store it and find I have already too much loaded 44.

I found 9 boxes from a long ago yard sale with $3 stickers. I think I talked her down to $20 for all. But it is FMJ and suspected reloads.

Other 44 mag I found was when I first started reloading. Midway would have a sale, when it was free shipping. Long time ago. I bought 240g jhp bulk and had loaded all 1000 with 23.6 gr of H110. Spicy for an older me.

The 44 SBH was shooting off to one side. The barrel was coming unscrewed. Ruger fixed it. That was almost 40 years ago, good memories.

Had a big bag of Brand new Rio 12 gauge shotgun hulls I've been meaning to load, but wanted a 1-1/4 oz load but couldn't find much load data. So, I emailed Claybuster. Got an answer following morning that they have a brand new wad that's so new it's not even in the catalog or on their website yet, but I could try if I wanted a sample just send them my address and they would send me some. They arrived in 4 days. Good looking black wads too. Crimped up nice. These new wads are not yet in all stores so check around if you have some Rio hulls you want a1-1/4 oz field load.

Of all things, I spent several hours fitting a "universal" pot handle to the wife's favorites cook pot. A double boiler, steamer, bottom of heavy duty stainless, with the cast iron center. I told her the only thing universal about the handles is they do not fit anything. When the bakelite breaks it takes hours to re-fit one. I keep threatening to build a new handle on the mill out of stainless.

I have re-handled a number of my wife's pots it is always the bakelite crumbling that cause it . I tend to save the all stainless steel handles from the non stock pans that have gone bad and get useless . I find the Gotham Steel (ceramic copper color) handles very good to repurpose out of the set we got as a gift only one is still in use . and it is only nonstick if I am very careful .

It's been way too hot to cast bullets for weeks. That tropical storm that hit the southern portion of the state lowered the temps up here just enough to get some casting done. I was out of bullets for 357 mag & 38 special so they got the first seat. I melted up a pot of alloy that duplicates 50/50 COWW & lead + 2% tin. I cast up a batch of 158 grain semi-wadcutters. After I figured that I had enough to get by for a while I sunk a 3 pound lead ingot into the pot to soften up the alloy and switched to casting 148 grain wadcutters. I'll seat gas checks on the SWC's and powder coat everything tomorrow. 317302

been on a reloading blitz the last week and a half. kinda tired of reloading 20-30, shooting, reload 20-30 rounds for each gun. so i decided to load up 100 rounds for each of my guns and loads.

i’ve got 2 loads for the moment for my .243. at the moment. a 100 grain btsp load with H-4831sc and a 75 grain hpbt load with varget.

to day i loaded up 100 rounds for my mosin with the boolets i posted on here almost 2 weeks ago. mixed head stamp brass ( mostly ppu, winchester, s&b , and a couple others) 12.5 grains of unique.

i’m about over winchester brass. i’m having issues with winchester stamped brass in my .243 and the mosin. for both calibers i’m using winchester LRP primers and having a bugger of a time getting the primers flush or little under flush when trying to seat them. i’ve tried uniforming them with the lyman tool and still having issues .

with the .243 winchester brass i’m getting loose primer pockets after 2 loadings and i’m not loading hot loads. i’ll probably just replace the .243 winchester brass with star line when the rest of the pockets loosen up

Used Rustolium spray enamel to coat* (then baked) 155 remaining .38 caliber copper plated hollow based wad cutters I got at a gun show . These bullets shot terribly even at low 700 f/s ,shooting into snow banks I found the plating was pealing off . I coated some earlier in the summer and group with same 700 f/s load went from 6 inches at 15 yards to a inch and a half from standing position. One bullet smashed on a anvil with a hammer did not flake off the copper like they did uncoated .
I also coated 200 Lee 90 grain 32 caliber bullets that will be sized to .310 for 30-30 & 30 Carbine use .

* after coating a small batch the bullets shot very well I even seated a few backwards to the same depth as 158 grain bullet and loaded them to about 1500 f/s and they still shot well . One fired into a gallon jug of water on it's side did not exit only fragments found .

three cavities and i can crank out some bullets lickity-split. I had 80 bullets done before i knew it. kinda crazy 3 cavities is only $10-12 more than 2 cavity mold. hopefully by my next night off ( wednesday night). i’ll have them sized, lubed, and ready to load for the 760.

loaded up 38 .450 bush master rounds with hornady 250gr FTX bullets and 35.4 grains of lil gun. i went to the range a couple days ago and was shooting 3-4 inches high and right. I haven’t shot my .450 since shooting a doe last November. so I don’t know why it was off from zero unless it was bumped in the safe. i made adjustments to the scope but, poi didn’t want to respond.

it was hot, muggy, rainy and the mosquito were horrible at the range. so i’m hoping that was something to do with it. Tuesday it should be cooler, dryer, and i’ll be more prepared for the mosquitoes.

we have had so much rain since july 1st. had almost zero mosquitos all year except the last couple weeks. no they are so thick if you don’t watch it they will carry you away.

Took two deer rifles to 100 yard range for final sight in Gun one my first rifle a Remington model 30-06 ADL 22" barrel I bought in 1973 that I have not shot in years . I recently put a Leopold 3.0-10X -50 mm scope on it and bore sighted it and it is on at 25 yards .

Gun II a Marlin (Remington) Model 1895 45-70 with cast boolit of 354 grains powder coated averaging 2168 f/s .

I have to put a sight rail and new scope mounts on the 30-06 as there was no way the original 2 piece mounts would hold the 50 MM scope . The mounts were see though and high enough they where just to far apart because of the large scope bell . The new Weaver extra high mounts are steel with the spring ring that Hooks on one side and has two screws on the other side. This gun gave me nothing but trouble the scope rings kept coming lose allowing the scope to move? I tried everything there is also lock tight on the threads I gave up but did shoot some old reloads and factory ammo over the chrono graph . I had in the mix some 100 grain short jacket bullets I thought I loaded to 3300 f/s they did from 3450-3500 . Some Remington-UMC 220 grains I bought 18 in a old box in 1973 where all duds when I first got them I fired them and they where accurate but kicked pretty bad . The other factory was Remington and Federal no real surprises the 180 grains were in the 2650 f/s range . Some 110 grain varmint Speer bullets I loaded to 2800 f/s according to Speer book were doing very close to 2800 . Speer recommends 2800 as top speed for these bullets.

The 45-70 was off when I last shot it two years ago I cleaned it and put it in the safe , first two shots with the cast bullets touched at 100 yards but were high and left on the target backer . It took 5 shots to get the last two bullets in the 1 1/2" square at least this gun is ready for deer season! I know the load is a bit much but it shoots very well . This gun also took away any of my fear I was flinching !

Today I am going to take the Remington 700 apart check everything and put on another set of scope rings then try again .

Have any of you had trouble with Weaver scope rings?

Texas by God
09-19-2023, 08:58 AM
I’ve used Weaver rings since 1974 and the only problem I’ve ever had with them is getting the crosshairs square on the final tightening!
They aren’t beautiful, but they work very well.
The 4x4 rings work very well also in my experience.

Texas by God I have used them before with no issues also !

I did get another set of rings mounted today and the gun is all set to go . The rings I had on hand are higher then I like but the bolt handle is farther from scope so all is well I can even put the rear sight back on if I wish.

Notes from today the 5 Remington-UMC 220 grains very old rounds that misfired were torn down Powder and primers looked fine .
If you wonder how companies load for consistency here is the weighs of the powder 49.4, 49.0, 48.5, 48.9, 48.8 , The powder looked like IMR large grains possibly IMR-4831 or something else as slow. Bullets weighed 220.5, 220.1, 219.9, 220, 220.3 these bullets had a small hollow point .

My deer hunting load shot into 1 1/4" at 100 yards 180 grain SST 55 grains IMR-4350 .
Old deer load Sierra SBT same charge shot same point of aim and 1" group .
A load I tried during the bullet shortage from Y2K with a Sierra 190 gr. Bench rest shot one ragged hole at 100 yards ! These bullets fail miserably on deer they do work well on coyotes IF you do not want the pelt . The powder charge was WW 785 (discontinued) load from Winchester booklet said 2500 f/s they do 2370 f/s avg. From my 22" barrel They shot three inches lower then hunting loads .
A bit of a surprise was the 100 grain Speer Short Jackets They shot a 2.5" group 3 inches high above hunting load .

To finish the day off I got ahold of a guy that cerakoats and took my Charter arms Bulldog apart to have it done , I what the dark blue on the grip frame and Bronze on Cylinder .

I wanted to cast some bullets with a softer alloy than I usually use. These bullets are for a .308 caliber 7.62x39 bolt action and a Henry 45-70 lever action. I used an alloy that duplicates clip on tire weights, then cut it 50/50 with pure lead (no added tin). The bullets are air cooled. The 30 caliber bullets are 120 grain Saeco #302, and the 45's are NOE 460-315-RF. They're both going to get gas checked and powder coated, but I'm not doing that until tomorrow. I was just casting bullets in 90 degree heat. Luckily there was cold beer in the fridge afterwards so I was saved. I'll finish the rest of the job in the morning.

I had some 500 30-06 to process. Starting yesterday was tumble day with two batches running back-to-back. Then sized/deprimed them. These were picked up at a yard sale so there was a mixed bag of Military and civi brass. I ended up breaking 3 de-capping pins. Quite a few of the brass ended up in the scrap bucket.

Then I ran the dillon super swage on everything that was military, some crimps had been removed already.

After that I used the cartrigde length gauge to separate those that needed trimming. (about 1/3) and ran those through the Power Trimmer. I have the 3-way cutter that saves time.

Trim the inside flash hole burrs and back into the tumbler.

Does reloading count as exercise? The body feels like it had a workout.

I lubed and sized about 200 .45-70 brass and then tumbled them in corn cob media to get rid of the lube. I'm going to work up a load with 3031 for the Acme Bullet Co. Hi-Tek coated 350 grain RNFP boolit. I'm going to see how lucky I can get trying to get one load that shoots well in a Browning 1885 high wall, a very nice example of a Remlin .45-70 guide gun with a scout scope on an XS rail, and a near mint 24" Winchester-Miroku 1886 I got last week. Both the 1885 and 1886 have Williams aperture sights. The round itself is pretty forgiving and I'm looking for a load in the 1,500 fps range. I'm not going after grizzly bears or mastodons, after all. I'll get the first batch loaded tomorrow using Hornady data for their 350 grain jacketed RN in a Marlin 1895 as a start point in the range of 47.0 grains. annealed 7.62x54r and what brass i could salvage from the 400 30-06 reloads that i purchased. the attrition rate was high on the 30-06 brass. of the 400 rounds I probably threw at least half in the scrap bucket due to split necks. most of the 30-06 brass was military brass from the 1950’s and 1960’s. most of the factory brass was ok. I’m going to use those 30-06 for cast loads for my 760. I have other brass for jacketed loads.

over the weekend i fiddled around and made up some cast rounds for my RAR .450 from a lee 452-255-rn mold

Completely cleaned the reloading room…

From which I might conclude that you’re either:

1) a complete noob who hasn’t yet accumulated the typical bench top clutter most have, or

2) a grizzled veteran who finally has reached the hard stop of zero % clear bench space left anywhere (I’m almost there myself).

Switched the Lock-n-load over to 9mm, got about 400 loaded, goal is several thousand so I won't have to do it again for a while. This did require moving things around on the bench several times, found several items I had thought lost, and I'm sure lost some other items. Need to get some of the not reloading related stuff out of there so there is more room to stack important stuff ;)

Didn't make it in the reloading room, but did make it to gun club #2 and swapped lies and bought:

1 brick Remington 7-1/2 primers

1 brick Federal Large rifle primers

4 bricks Federal Large rifle Magnum primers

3 bricks CCI LR primers

2 bricks Winchester small rifle primers

2 lb. cans of IMR-4895

Nicked the double secret gun fund for $676.

Then wandered off to gun club #3 for a round of sporting clays. Shot awful, but it was with my best friend for the last 53 years. So it's all good. Don't have a clue how he's put up with me for all these years.

All but the Winchester SR have already been claimed by shooting buddies.

All in all a good day even if I didn't accomplish anything.

Back to being semi-productive tomorrow.

I've worked on loading up 150 round of both 32 Winchester Special and 35 Remington with Accurate 32-180A and 36-200A bullets respectively. Had to cast up a bunch of the 32 calibers but already had plenty of the 35 caliber version on hand. The weather is finally decently cool here in north Alabama so that working in the garage is pleasant again. I've got the 32 Specials done and got a god start on the 35 Remingtons.

Disassembled a batch of 6.5x53R ammo. SLOWLY going through my buddy's stuff to recover the components. He passed away in June and I had loaded a couple thousand rounds for us to shoot. Probably 25+ different calibers.

Figured out that an old school fencing pliers works the best for cast boolits in boomer calibers like 500/450 N. E. Tried side cutters, channel locks and linesman pliers.

Fencing pliers work the best.

Biggest problem is the gas checks that get stuck in the neck, I have to fish every one out with a piece of baling wire with a hook bent in the end. And it's real baling wire, probably wouldn't work with other wire.

Good thing there's a zillion old movies on youtube.

Time I made a contribution to this thread.
Finally got the extractor made and fitted for the .28-30-120 barrel I've installed to a Stevens 44-1/2 action, so now it's time to appraise the treasure trove of UMC brass I paid a king's ransom for a couple of years ago. (Yes, that's how long projects languish around here, what with my advanced age and state of decrepitude.) This brass is insanely rare, so I mustn't risk a single piece. Set about plunk-testing it all in the barrel, and of course some of it needed to be FL sized, so out comes the CH4D die set. Now, I don't mind telling you that this .28-30 die set leaves a lot to be desired. The FL die over-works the upper part, by about .010" at the mouth, so an unnecessarily brutal expansion turns out to be required. Does the expander in the set do this properly? Not on your life! Too short; it forces the brass to cock in the shell-holder so it expands crooked, and it leaves the mouth too small for cast bullets anyway. So it's over to the lathe to make a proper 2" long expander, to be used with suitable spacers in a Lee "Universal Expander" (which it isn't) die body. (I made one of these last year, but gave it away.) But first, anneal, so as not to risk splitting any when expanding from ~.276" I.D. to .285". The gods smiled upon me, I didn't lose a single piece. So I now have almost 50 sound, sized and plunk-tested cases to feed the Stevens, (and also my infamous "bitza Ballard", which has a Stevens .28-30 barrel on it, and is still in need of a buttplate). Actually loaded 10 rounds with the correct 120 grain bullet and a moderate charge of 4198, but I'm too tired even to take the Stevens out back to fire it. With this barrel, it's a 10-1/2 pound rifle, and I've been heaving it around since 7 o'clock this morning. I need a NAP!

Last week I bought a large old heavy file cabinet for $15 at a estate sale so for the last three days I did a deep clean on my reloading room ! finally done still have room in the file cabinet can see my reloading bench and the floor ! I believe it was 2012 the last time I actually deep cleaned the entire room ....

I also belled the .357 magnum cases that I started prepping last week now I have a large size plastic Coffee can full of ready to load .357 magnum . (my guess is about 700 cases )

One odd thing I ran the cases after sizing and decapping them in a sonic cleaner to clean primer pockets and inside of case more then anything . A bit of soap and lemishine was in the hot water the nickel from cases seems to have transferred to the brass only cases in a this coating? It took three 480 second cycles with heat on to get the primer pockets clean I also needed three loads in the cleaner .

Since I had my trimmer mounted to the bench, (have to take my powder stand down to do that), I decided that since I had less than 50 rounds of .30-30 in cast, I'd make up some. At least a box of 50... so I trimmed 50 cases (Winchester) down to 2.028" after sizing and deburred inside & outside the case mouths. Hand-primed all 50 with my Lee hand-priming tool in the comfort of the A/C, and then went back out to the shop to finish up. Got my old cardboard Unique can full of 150 RFN from the Saeco #316 mold and set up the lubri-sizer. I only have one sizer for the .30-30, a .309". After hunting high & low I found the correct top punch and began. With a load of lube, a RCBS gas-check these weight right at 153.9 grains. Double checked my Lyman book for load data and confirmed that my 27.5 grains of RE-7 isn't quite a max load. They don't list a load for a 150, only a 170 & 173 cast in the 50th. The 170 data shows 28 grains to be max, so with the lighter bullet, I'm still confident it's a safe load in my Winchester 94s. Since the only .30-30s I own are Winchester 94s, I took one with me to check feeding and chambering. Not that I was really concerned as this bullet/case combo have been my go to load since I started loading cast for it back in 1973, although then I could buy gas checked bullets from a local supplier in So.Cal. He used the same mold, so when he quit, that's what I bought. A four hole mold, they add up quick. I believe I'm about a third of the way thru my 3rd box of RCBS gas checks, so I've shot up about 2,300 of these loads. They don't hold any surprises for me. But, it's a real sense of satisfaction to shoot ammo that you've crafted for your own supplies and labor. From casting, sizing & lubing the projectiles, ensuring the cases are good and in within specs, to measuring powder charges, seating depth, neck tension and a final overall looksee at the finished cartridge, it's a hobby and excellent way to block out the rest of the world for a couple of hours. Randomly checked they easily check out in the Wilson check gauge. But, like always, they're tight in my custom Winchester 94, and if past results are a guide, they should clock around 2290 fps from this rifle.319303

great score from the rifle range. i havnt had it this good in a long time. definitely tell deer season is only 3 weeks away. 44 pcs of .450 bm. 18 pcs 6.5 prc 13 pcs 30-06, 5 pcs 30-30 1 pcs308 and 1 pcs 243
.

i can use all of it but the 6.5 prc. between the orginal couple boxes of .450 bm i bought and all of the range pick up i havnt had to purchase 1 piece of .450 bm brass. the .450 is one of the 2 new popular cartridges in the state of michigan in the last 8-10 yrs. the other cartridge being the .350 legend. i’ve literally picked up 150-200 pcs of .350 legend brass in the last year.

the .350 legend and .450 Bm have taken over as being probably the most used cartridges in the state in the last 8 years. before the for .350 and .450 came into popularity due the laws being changed in what is now called the limited rifle zone (aka the old shot gun only zone). michigan hunters either used the 30-30 or 30-06 to take deer north of the rifle demarcation line of state high way m-57. south of highway m-57 it was shot gun or muzzle loaders.

new NOE mold came in the mail yesterday. whew, fast shipping. Utah to michigan in 2 days. this NOE 452-304-rf mold makes a really nice bullet for .450 BM. the mold started making perfect bullets after the 4th fill. i made around 100 bullets tonight.

i’m going to order 45 gas checks before i go to bed this morning. i found basically a 2 for 1 deal on lube and sizer does on face book. hopefully by monday my .425 and .454 sizers are here.

getting down to the wire though as far as load work up. michigan fire arm deer season opens on the 15th. i probably won’t shoot them untill i get a deer. i’m sure being almost 50 grains heavier they will shoot low to how my scope is set up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231103/37452803946d988685b0446d1c348794.jpg

Loaded 46 - 44 Magnum with 240gr J- Words for my truck gun box The box gets reloaded when empty - if the hash marks in the lid are correct this is the 27th time this brass has been loaded. (I dropped one piece two years ago from my horse while reloading, one last winter in the snow, and the third is somewhere in my truck, the last had a loose primer pocket tonight).

I came up with 142 empty 44-40 brass so I took a couple of days to load them with 205 gr Cast FN and good old Unique.
I only had 130 bullets, so the last dozen got a .433” round ball over a pinch of AA#2 for “fancy rat”hunting.

Yesterday I spend some time on my Mini lathe working on a .430" swage die based on Pacific design. I am wanting a better bullet for my 3" barrels Charter Arms Bulldog . I have two top punches one make a full wad cutter the other a wad cutter with a Torx-40 bit indent (hollow point) . I messed up a bit and the die after heat treating is forming a .435" bullet So until I cut new die and punches I am sizing the bullet to .431" . For a core I used some reject Lee 170 cast bullets of pure lead I only made two bullets so far and loaded them over 5.5 grains Red Dot powder. The bullets go through a 55 steel drum and 4 inches into sod and dirt . I need to cast more cores to do some accuracy testing and expansion testing in water/paper. The bullet I dug up was 160 grains starting at 178 grains and was point on in the dirt mushroomed to .55 " . Steel is a poor expansion test but this barrel stops a 9mm Luger round from a 3.5" barrel even with hot ammo along with .38sp wad cutters and all .380 ammo .

Measured 700 10mill brass that I had set aside for being too short. I want to test the less than saami .982 to see if it is worth loading down to .979. Most of what I have that are under size are .981 to.979. Any ideas on this subject? I suppose I will test till I find the lower limit. Thanks pillsnpwd my new handle.

It was a windy nasty rainy day here high of 35 degrees. I set up to cast in pole barn between the open doors despite wind shifts I always had the fumes away from me . I cast from a pot of nearly pure lead making about 50 208 grain hollow points for the .45 acp . Mostly I cast Lee 170 309 bullets most of these bullets will be coated then swaged to either short jacketed .351" bullets for my Winchester model 1907 or to .430" for use in my Charter Arms Bulldog . The bullets are 177 -178 grains for the most part the short jacket adds 12 grains if I do use it on the .351 bullets . What I am attempting with the .44 Sp is a large flat point with a T-40 hollow point . I am hoping this will expand in tissue at speed possible from my 3" Bulldog I will experiment until I get a reliable bullet and am looking at the 180 grain weight range . The only truly effective ammo I have found for this gun is some 165 grain Corebon , nothing else seems to expand .

Finished testing the shorter than SAAMI 10mm brass to see if my XDM likes it at all. It seems to like it just fine. All lengths from.972 to.981. That loosens up right around 1000 rounds of brass. I should add that I have changed out the striker for Titanium with heavier spring and replaced recoil spring and swooped guide rod for solid ss. Sure hits the primer hard. Springs and things from Springer Presision Bend OR.

I love the drill and tap course.....where is the cordless drill...he really asked that question. Put all that stuff down, come with me......this is a Bridgeport Milling machine it is a very good thing for drilling and tapping on gun metal.

I am building a small 2x4 table in my shed to mount my Lee press on. The plan is to go out there and process 380 and 9mm cases. (Got a pillow-case full of 9mm).
Now that they turned the clocks back I need something to do in the evening, and going out to the shed gets me out of the house. The shed has no power. For comfort there is a kerosene heater. Got a nice rechargeable LED work light. I can listen to music on the phone or just enjoy the peace and quiet. May even process some really crappy range scrap that's been sitting out there.
Beats watching tv of sitting on the computer.

Also distances me from the refrigerator.

We are a far piece from any real filing project.

Last week he wanted to "check" his AR barrel by R and R it. Easy, deal, right.... Normaly on the reinstall, you see not enough torque, so I said nothing and watched, he then snapped the head off my AR combination tool while reinstalling the barrel nut. Thus we had an applying proper torque discussion. Plus his prior experience with car frames VS his new experience with firearms being very different levels of pressure application.

I fixed the combo tool.

Do you PC with the electric gun or do you use the Plastic BB and plastic tub shake method? Is the acetone just to remove any lube residue?

Not today but November 14th we finished up public sight in days at the club and another noticed some odd looking brass in the brass bucket .
Someone fired .300 Winchester Magnum in a .300 Weatherby Chamber , he must have hit the target ? If it is the guy I think he had trouble with his scope and went to the store he bought the scope from to have it looked at . They told him it had plenty of movement but was just stiff and it was it took a wrench to move the adjuster with the dial removed . The scope has a lock once it is zeroed at 100 yards the company will send a dial calibrated for your ammo .

P.S. we had a guy shooting a Rossi lever gun in .357 Mag all his cases were bulged just above the case web quite a bit!
