Just Sayin. I have tried small rifle primers in my nine mill work just fine just a few to test it. I’ve been using large pistol magnum primers cci 350 in all my 10 mill because that’s all I had for thousand rounds and that’s been working well also. Start at the bottom numbers and went up about halfway and didn’t want really hot anyway no chrono.

Finally got a room to store my guns and reloading stuff in the house. So now the only thing I have to go to the shed for is to melt/cast lead, powder coat my boolits and tumble brass. The roughest part was bringing in my bench. Now I just need to make another workbench for wood working projects.

Not cast, but I Loaded 983 .223 over the last two days. Think I finally got the quirks mostly figured out on this new load master press the wife bought me for Christmas. I think I need to run the swaged deeper on my .223 brass to make more radius from the former crimp.

No wad or cup- just any large primer, 2.8grs(.3cc) of Bullseye, push .380" ball into case firmly. I use them single shot only- they might make the trip through the feed system- but probably not. So I'm cool with single loading them.

Mocked up dummy cartridges for 45-70 collar button gallery loads. They cycled great, so proceeded to load and test some rounds with my MP Molds (MiHec) 153-grain collar buttons. Ballistically stable at 20 yards, cutting nice round holes in paper, and reasonably accurate shooting offhand. They were a bit louder than desired so I'm working down now. Will also be doing serious testing (not shooting offhand) and looking for something that groups within 1/2" at 25 yards. The goal is to be able to carry my deer rifle with a few small game loads in the pocket and some good dope to go with them.

Having a barely 20’ day with even light I grabbed the chrono left under the tree by Santa and headed to the range. Have many 9&10 mm loads with never a speed check. Gathering brass and supplies to load some 2 or 300 of each. So glad that powder is coming in most every week now. Also looking into reloading primers. Seems quite tedious but I m thinking a necessary skill for the future.

Cast up 148 of these 45-70 collar button beauties from my MiHec 4-cavity aluminum mold.

295124

These nominal 153-gr buttons drop at 154 gr cast of COWW. Cull rate 48% not adjusted for heatup casts. I find that the cavity closest to the handles takes a while to start casting right. A more thorough mold heatup would probably help.

With regard to the cull rate, I will say 1) That I am a noobie and 2) That I am being very selective--any rounded edges on the base, non-concentricity on the base, or wrinkles on the driving band, and they go back in the pot. Whether that's necessary for 25m is an open question, but while I search for my "most accurate load," I'm being very picky.

Got a new mold today and cast some nice looking Lead globs that were supposed to be 250 grains and they averaged 252, at least the 10 I weighed did. A Lee #90324 379-250; and I have to say, I didn't have to cull a single one. Dropped perfect from the first to the last. Didn't even have to tap the Mold to get them to drop. And within .0002” Of round and .356. Compared to the plated bullets from HSM I’m kind of excited about them I’m gonna try them out with probably HS six and small rifle primers from Germany just because I have lots of them and no small pistol. I was salvaging a mistake. I have had a 1916 Spanish Mauser in .308W for years but did very little with it. Before I knew better, I bought some surplus military 308W at a gun show then found out the rifle shouldn't use full house .308W. So it sat around for years until I had a discussion with a more experienced reloader friend.
Today I broke down the rounds, weighed 10 charges and examined the powder, an extruded powder like IMR. The full case charge was 45.5 gr. average which would make the powder 4064-ish. Downloaded the rounds (10%) to a 4064 mid-range 300 Savage load and re-installed bullets.
Since these are Berdan primed, they will be stored away for SHTF use. I have plenty of .308W cases and H4895 for usable loads in normal circumstances. Waste not, want not.

Been working on fitting a horizontal forearm to my AO WH 1928 [semi-sbr’ed] Thompson. Had a extra long forearm that I picked up that someone else had built for his too heavy long barreled AO 1927 Thompson that also had a part where he could slide a bipod on it. I cut it down and filled his screw holes and half of the sling swivel mortise with pieces from the scrap I cut off. Got the 75 degree bolt hole drilled and mortise cut for the swivel. Might be going to a WW2 military ZSA match soon and want to shoot it and have a sling on it. Used pcc’s to compete but never my Tommy, should be a hoot. As my buttstock is a correct GI 1928 it has a swivel on it. Built the buttplate for it out of a steel Enfield buttplate. Couldn't find a decent priced Thompson gi original.

Pulled out some 520 grain boolits my neighbor gave me for my 45-70. Wasn't sure they would chamber due to the .460 diameter, and there to go into a 1885 Browning which are notorious for having a tight chamber. I lucked out. Seated them at 2.655 and they fit. Not a plunk, but no real resistance when closing the breach either. Should be a fun load I hope. Not fast, only a bit over 1K fps, but with the weight I think it will be good for elk.
If I like them and their accurate with some work I can pick up the pace on velocity if needed.

I hatched a plan today to hobble down the stairs to the room on Monday if for nothing else to see what it looked like when I left it. I’m certain I was working on something I believe I was working up some 9mm loads for a training session in February that I will no longer be able to attend. Funny how fast priorities can change‼️

I finished sizing the 45 acp brass this morning while the 40 S&W along with the 360 Nitro express was pin tumbling. Was able to get 100 225gr #452374 Lyman cast boolits into the lube-a-matic for tomorrow's loading. Will use red dot. Likely around 4.7 grains or so. Will have to get out the master caster soon cause not too many left in the box to load so, that's ok, I've got some ingots ready to go. Although it really needs to warm up a bit.

Fully prepped about 200 5.56 cases... Ugh, my least favorite chore at the bench, but a necessary evil I suppose. We do run some ARs, as does my son, so the ammo cans must be filled from time to time. Probably have close to 1,000 fully prepped at this point, so time to set up the press and grind through the misery.... Would much rather be doing something cool like BP loads in 43 Spanish but....it can't all be fun, right!?

My small casting setup. When I sold my house, I scaled down my reloading setup. I also recently put together a minimal, but effective, casting station to get back into the hobby. Plenty of light and I added a ducted exhaust fan to move fumes outside. Just goes to show you don’t need a fancy expensive setup to enjoy casting. :)

I'm loading practice ammo for my wife's ("The Boss's") 9mm, and for my new (to ME) Israeli Kareen P-35.
I reloaded 9x19mm in the following forms:
4.8/BE-86/147 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/WIN Cases/1.130"
4.8/BE-86/147 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/F-C Cases/1.130"
4.8/BE-86/147 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/R-P Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/125 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/WIN Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/125 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/F-C Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/125 gr. PC-TC/CCI SPPs/R-P Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/122 gr. LRNFP/CCI SPPs/WIN Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/125 gr. LRNFP/CCI SPPs/F-C Cases/1.130"
5.5/BE-86/125 gr. LRNFP/CCI SPPs/R-P Cases/1.130"
25 rounds each, chronograph and accuracy results to follow. "Accuracy" with a P-35 is somewhat "in the eyes of the beholder", since they have a reputation for "adequate but not stellar" groups. Eight or nine rounds rounds of 10 in an 8" diameter circle at 50 yards is probably twice as accurate as it needs to be.
I have ONE way of organizing the results, but if anyone has a super-neato method of tabulating the specs on the ammo, plus average velocity + standard deviation, please PM me.

I chronographed a load I worked up for a OLD Winchester 1907 I size a Hornady 140 grain FXT bullet to .351 " Because of the shape this bullet is the same length as the original 180 grain bullet . It is seated to 1.9" and some loads I had for the 180 grain were tried .

first try was using AA 1680 powder a maximum loading density only give 1740 f/s the powder was to slow gave less then a 180 grain bullet .
Next try is 2400 powder 19 grains in a OLD Lyman manual said just under 1800 f/s and it is faster then AA 1680 . Working up to 19 grains all were safe and cycled action it gave the 140 grain bullet an average of 2150 f/s cases drop next to me .

First try at casting (finaly),long story short, inherited some casting equipment some used and abused ok most,so been gearing up to get a fresh go a Lee 4-20 pot and a few molds mostly lee and a RCBS 30-180-FN so I cleaned up a lee 309-200 and played with both today learned some on amount of heat to use and how to speed up and mostly slow down, first issue was non filled molds, got over and through that then was frosted bullets(not some frosting but lots) started to get away from them also, it will be a learning curve for sure but progress as been made into my journey of casting my own boolits
Thanks to all for the info that is shared on this forum, makes the rough road a lil smoother.

Stared longingly at the “new” firearms I got from my Fathers collection as I worked on other things. Hard having him gone but these help me keep the memories going.

Among the pieces, a bare Brownells 1911 SS kit gun (with all the parts needed) he had barely started fitting on. I will eventually have enough time to finish it for him. Irony being, when his father passed in 07 he left behind a barely started tuning job on a 1918 manufacturer 1911 which my dad finished and presented to me the last time I saw him. (Yes it retains is property of USG stamping)

I cast my first batch of 600 125gr 9mm and 375 230gr .45 out of my automated Magma caster.
I sized them through my Star Lube Sizer (no lube)
I bought a nice used toaster oven for $45 and powder coated my first batch of 9mm.
I test loaded 50 rounds to try out tomorrow.
Here is a video of my Magma Caster that I automated.
This is an older video from around a year ago.
I got too busy with work and set the project aside till now.
I added a touchscreen which I can also use to search the web if I wanted to.

The mold got here yesterday and I got 105 finished in the first 24 hours. I had the hot plate too low and had quite a few rejects at first and hitting the hole with the lead stream is a little trickier on an 8 cavity mold. Smaller target and it's easy to slop alloy into the next cavity. I just need practice. The pot sure goes down fast. NOE is out of gas check seaters so I tapped them on. I have a Star sizer so I changed the holes on my .3565" die to the bottom and ran the boolits through check first. I used my shortest push rod and it barely fit but it worked. Hope to try them this weekend.

Well I finally have compatible brass. With only 87 pieces of 350 Legend Brass I added a tub of 9mm to the lightman tumbler. The steel pins clean much faster when you have a full load and the 2 calibers separated easily.

I gas checked and lubed another 125 MP358-200s. I'll load them in the clean 350L brass later.

Got a Fedex email saying the HP version is on the way.

The Pro Melt 2 was at 700F and the mold ran GREAT! Tapping on the pins to dislodge boolits damaged a few so I switched to tapping the mold with my 6oz rawhide mallet, just enough to vibrate and let the pins slide by themselves.

Might want to at least wear safety glasses. A face shield would be better. I have reclaimed a few primers but not many and never had a problem...you just never know if Murphy is around the corner.

I look at it like wearing glasses when I shoot. I have never needed them after touching off about 500,000 rounds in my lifetime, but still wear glasses...just a "silly" habit I suppose.

Or maybe I have been lucky.

In the recovery period I read everything I could about casting premium BPCR bullets but these molds made my job easy, cast about 50 *really* nice 400 grain PB bullets without a whole lot of pain and am going to cast some 535 grainers tomorrow. SO great to be back in my shop!

Luberisized 120 165 grain 8mm Loverin bullets for my .32 Ideals, then had an attack of clumsy. Dropped them on the floor by the lathe, they picked up a potpourri of grit, so I had to boil 'em clean and do it over. [smilie=b:

I finished the 24 GPC brass die formed, primed, powdered and 80gr bullets loaded for fire forming, resized 20 rounds of fire formed brass and uniformed the pockets. 100 pieces of 22-250 AI brass neck sized, I used my old system with powder graphite and lead shot on half then tried imperial wax on the other half, pockets uniformed.
while resting loaded two boxes of 28 Ga shot shells.

I have three 6mms I am testing for an ATN Thor 4 thermal mounting.

Not my reloading room - but headed to a buddy's house to finish up 30,000 9mm, 20,000 5.56 and 15,000 7.62 NATO. We finished casting the boolits almost 6 mo ago from a large amount of lead I procured, purchased primers for the project 3 years ago. Looking forward to watching our boys get these emptied out again!!

Cranked out 1500 9mm 147 grain boolits of my 2000 count target. Been very windy all last week so only about 4 hour casting time a day.

I finished a small batch of 44-40 and I'm starting a batch of .41 magnum. Both are loaded with 9grs of Unique. And benched the Revelation .22 rifle with old Federal Lightning ammo. A decent group for Iron sights at 40 yards but 10" high.....sights are bottomed out.....time to scope it!

Bit the bullet today and Bought a 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights at the local tire shop. Looked at the top of the bucket hope in I Saw about 90% lead maybe more. They said it was an old bucket and maybe had more land than the newer buckets. And they said the last shipment of wheel weights were all zinc and steel so it won’t be long before all the lead wheel weights are gone. Haven’t weighed it but more than 100lbs. $80. Plus tax. Broke my heart paying that much.

I cast another 600 38-200 Penta Hollowpoints. Had trouble finding the groove, too cold and those boolits do not want to leave the mold. Went to 710F and had a very good run.

Loaded my last 9 free 350L cases with A11FS and a Magnum primer under a 38-200 hoping to tighten up the Extreme Spread.

I have been wanting to try ladle casting. The "Brown Santa Clause" dropped off my new Lyman Big Dipper and ladles on Friday and I spent the day messing with it today. Ran about 40lbs. of pretty .361" boolits for my 358 Winchester today. I just may be putting up the o'le bottom pour pot!!!

Spent the last two days reforming 30/40 AI back to 30/40. Went well with only a few cases I didn't like the look of. So far today have expanded, trimmed and chamfered 70+ and have another hundred or so being tumbled before expanding and trimming. Expanded as a separate operation as I reformed them in a 30/40 FL die with the expander removed and after reforming decapped with the Lee decapping die. Using a Lyman M die backed out enough to expand the neck but not flare the case. Once I finish trimming and chamfering on the last ones will anneal all of them before loading, figure the reform operation is the textbook example of work hardening. Did try ten with my moderate loads for my Ruger No 3's and there were no issues, so if the trend continues figure I can put another thousand cast boolits down range over the next year or two. Not sure how these would work for full power J bullet hunting loads, but have enough good brass to cover that (about 10 rounds a year).

OS —— I haven’t ladle cast in 20 years, RCBS Promelt is way too easy —- BUT, I recently have read almost everything Paul Matthews ever wrote and had a new Steve Brooks mold. I had long ago given away my ladle casting stuff and big brown had brought me the same setup you just got. Everything I read said 30-1, ladle cast, etc. I just spent a really enjoyable few hours casting some of the nicest 400 grain 45-70 bullets I’ve ever cast. I had plain forgotten how enjoyable it was to slow down, take it easy and throw good bullets, I’m a hopeless reloading gun nut….

I just separated the bucket of ww I bought from tire store last week. 48 lbs Fe. 31lbs Zn. 68 lbs Pb. Plus a few hours of dusty work. $80 not really happy with cost.
Managed 100 cleaned n primed 10 mm brass with reamed pockets and flash holes all the same length with fed 200 spm primers. Trying to get my velocities to balance out + or - closer. Haven’t been able to figure why 2 out of 5 are all ways way slower. Got a crono for Christmas. So don’t understand most of what I know.

Sometimes mag primers will tighten up Extreme Spread, sometimes not. Most powder burns more consistently as pressure goes up so picking a powder that's in the top end of it's range for your application helps. Extreme Spread is not an indicator of accuracy, or so I've been told over and over.

Load the first 19 500/450 #1 Express loads today.

New caliber to me, 10 loaded with Lyman 457122, Ben's Red and aluminum gas checks for non-gas checked boolits. Used 5744 at the lowest load. We'll see if this will regulate.

9 rounds with a custom Accurate boolit, ~295 grains flat point with G/C, same starting load as the Lyman boolit.

Loading was a bit of a challenge.

C-H only had a sizer die in stock, so I used that for case forming and F/L sizing 500 N.E. cases down to 500-450's.

Used the expander from the .458 Win Mag to expand the neck.

Seated boolits with a 470 N.E. seating die with a seating stem that I turned, the 470 stem was too short for the 2.750" cases.

And wrote a bunch of notes on how I'm doing this because I'll forget what I did by next week.
