Honestly, these past few weeks of staying at home, what HAVEN'T I done???

I barely have any empty cases/hulls. Loaded .30-06, 30-30, .38 spl, .357 mag, .44 spl. .44 mag, .45acp, 12,16, 20, & 28 gauges.

Since I used a lot of cast boolits, I lube sized and replenished my supplies of ready to load boolits.

Then, I cast to replenish my supplies of on deck boolits.
Cast 45 H&G 68s, 44 200 RFs, 44 Keiths, 38 148 WCs, Lyman 358156PBs, 9mm 124TLSWCs, and 30 LEE155s. Only thing left is to cast up some 22 64 NATOs.

I did a smelt in August which should have given me enough boolit alloy for about 3 yrs. Went through most of that, maybe I'll do a smelt next?

Refinished a set of Ahrends grips (did a thread about that,) fixed a cracked recoil pad on a 20 ga A5, and am currently fixing a stripped screw handle on the 44RF mold (there's a thread about that.)

Cleaned up and reorganized up the whazoo!!

And a whole bunch more I probably forgot.

As much as I used to gripe, I miss going to work!

I found out that none of the WW’s the tire store gave me are usable for boolits; easy come, easy go. So I smelted some pb mini muffins and added some pewter to the mix. I’m going to split the pot between Lee 358105swc, C309150F, and 379250F till I run out. Good casting weather, windy and cold and wet.

Windy Cold and Wet here too. I got the heater going before breakfast, the shop should be toasty now. Perfect casting weather!

Went for a walk this morning after doing chores. Will start the polisher with some GI 30-06 LC 54. Got almost two coffee cans so will take several batches.

Yesterday finished up making about 50pcs of 300Sav brass from civilian 308Win brass. That went well, so loaded them up with some Berry's plated 150gr 30-30 slugs for the grand kid to burn up. The 177gr and 190gr are a little heavy for him yet. He's a lightweight.

Need to cast more 38cal and 45acp slugs. Have lubed up all available in house. The 38cal are all loaded. Have buckets of 38 brass to load so need to cast for that caliber. Getting primers will become an issue soon. Have used up several bricks. The CCI 400 are very hard to find. Seems lots of reloaders are busy.

Son and I plan on a forest walk later today, looking to fill our mountain lion tags. 190gr cast 30-06 should work.
Lee C312-185-1R sized to 310, lubed and GC =190gr for me using Carnuba Red.

I fired up the newly cleaned Pro Melt 2 and started with a little over a half pot of lead and cast that. No significant drips so I filled it full. It dripped all the way down. LOL So I cleaned it again and will try lapping this afternoon. I got 6-700 #503 Boolits despite the drips. Still pouring rain.

This was the first casting session in the new shop but I've been reloading here a while now.

Well decided to test an experiment so went to the range and did that only got two shots as I forgot som critical items. But also tested some low velocity 303british with the lee 90-311 T.L. T.C. S.W.C. This is the result at 30 meters 259816
This is a win for me

You aren’t going to buy it for anywhere near that price anymore. You can try Jeff Bartlett for pulldown powder. For regular powder Powder Valley is a good place to start. They’re the barometer for pricing.

Ivanfern,

For 223 powder, you may want to consider milsurp if you a willing to purchase at least 16 lbs or so.

The supply of WC 844 (H335 equivalent) seems to have dried up recently, but WC 846 (BL-C(2) equivalent) seems to be available for now.

https://americanreloading.com/en/264-gunpowder

Edit,

I found another milsurp source that has both WC 844 and WC 846

I decided to upgrade my case annealing machine I built two summers ago. While it works perfectly,I had to add one case at a time.
Today I installed a 2ND drive motor and lathe turned a case feeder. By changing the speed of both the annealing drm and the case feeder, There is no problem with timing.
Depending on case size and flame temperature, the machine will do 500-750 cases an hour.
When the machine is set up the annealing looks like Lake City did the annealing. No chance at all of overheating the brass as the special cake pan is designed to absorb heat. It works very well indeed.
I will be building a case hopper so I can load the hopper and do other reloading things.
Here is the original version:

259953

Here it is today:

The machine is very compact and weighs less than 5 pounds.

My reloading room is my garage. I've been working on downsizing my collection the past few years and have ended up with some extra scopes. Spent the afternoon replacing inexpensive scopes with nicer scopes, although I still have a hard time replacing a B&L made Bushnell Banner with a Nikon on a classic style rifle. Anyway, I'll have a good reason to shoot them all when/if the facilities around here ever open up!

I did some .22 rim thickness sorting.

I use the Hornady gauge, but I found that to get consistency I needed to permanently JB Weld it to the calipers. So, I sacrificed a $20 Harbor Freight set. I found it is easier and faster to mount the set up to my bench. Just use a 3/4 " block and a soft jaw squeeze clamp.

Several mox-nix projects.

Hammered apart a few 44 mags; some unknown reloads I got in a lot purchase and some old Winchester that had started corroding. I saved the primers for reuse, the brass is crushed, the projectiles will be melted. The powder is in the garden.

Put away some range brass, assorted miscellaneous stuff; .30-30, 6.5 Grendel, 223, Blackout....

Loaded 30 count of .223 to break in the barrel of the new Howa. Medium load of I4895 and 55gr Hornady.

And some general cleanup.

Yesterday I prepped and loaded 400+ .223 loads. Just Plinking ammo. Then cast around 500 Lyman 75 gr .32 pills. Today I ran the .32's through the Lubrisizer, then loaded some 8MM Mauser brass I tumbled last week. Only have about 75 pieces of 8MM brass. Thinking of forming another 75-100 pieces tomorrow from some .270 brass I have lying around.

Busy day today in the shop...

I received 2 full buckets of WW from a hunting partner of mine. He owns a garage. So far the buckets are yielding about 85% lead...the rest being Steel/Zinc....not too bad...I figure its worth about $80 or so.

So...I've been Powder coating boolits today for him as a payback for the free WWs. The problem is...I had many of my boolits already tumble-lubed and stored in plastic jars.

I took them all out and soaked them in gasoline which dissolves the Alox coating very nicely....then a quick soak/rinse in Denatured Alcohol which gets the oily residue off. Once I dry them out...its on to powder coating. They coat perfectly.

Well today...I did a few hundred .358s and .430s....Blue, Red, and JD Green. I already had some in White and Lt Blue that I threw in the bag for him as well. It looked like a big bag of jelly beans when I was done....REALLY heavy jelly beans.

2 cavity 45/70 Lees moulds are tough. I suggest having a second mould to work with.
You can cast with the 45/70 then cast twice with whatever other mould you have. Then back to the 45/70.
Big bullets in a mould with barely any meat to it and they frost up fast!

I had 1lb of Sport Pistol powder sitting around that I hadnt opened yet. So on Friday I loaded up a few test rounds for a few different calibers and bullets. Some loads of jacketed bullets and a some loads of coated lead bullets. Each bullet type got one load at a low starting charge weight and one at halfway between the starting charge and max charge weight from the books.

9mm: 115gn (2 different bullet types) and 124gn (2 bullet types)
40S&W: 155gn, 180gn (3 bullet types)
38spl/357mag: 125gn (3 bullet types), 158gn (2 bullet types)

So a total of 26 different loads...10 cartridges per load.

On Sunday I was going to chrono all of them but it was so windy that I was worried that the chrono would get blown over by the wind. So test firing will have to wait until another day.

Nice mold !!

This was my first time using them and I don’t think I will ever go back! They make great looking ingots and the large surface area helps them cool quickly. My only complaint is that they are a touch difficult to flip back over after dumping out the ingots if you don’t have something small to slide under the tab. I’m working on a handle design that would make them a lot easier to move around. All in all I would give them a 9.5/10 and highly recommend them.

PC’d all of them today. Mostly clear PC. I mixed smokes purple and black together and had some blue flakes that stuck to the boolots that I did not get wiped completely out of my separate bounce container to knock off the uneven build up after tumble coating. The blue and purple are my rejects as they had flaws and the HP cavities were a little oblong. I just had fun testing colors on them. I’ll use them for plinking and sighting my gun before testing loads.

Wife was watching Q stuff, so I went in and cast about 600 125 grain 357s for my 357 sig setup... Will GC and PC those guys in the next couple days.
One thing that might be post worthy is that I don't think that I have that many gas checks. But I do have a PM GC maker for 35 cal... So maybe I'm making GCs this week..

I machined a batch of cases for my 44 rimfire/centerfire 1870s vintage Remington rolling block. This is a real oddball that takes an externally lubricated, 218 gr heel bullet. I made a video showing how I do it.

I boiled my tools.

Well actually it was more like an initial simmer and then a steeping with the heat off.

I had been using muriatic acid on my bench top for zinc detection. The pegboard of hand tools right above it did not care for the fumes. A few days later I grabbed one to use and found it heavily rusted on the exposed side. All the others were in the same condition.

After I finished cussing my stupidity, I remembered the thread here about citric acid for brass tarnish removal. There was mention there that it removes rust from steel. Well, it works! A soak in a hot 10% solution took off the rust. Granted, the tools aren't pretty with the finish gone, and the badly rusted ones have surface pitting, but at least they're functional (and coated in Sheath and with the acid now removed).

I have a machinists vise that belonged to my grandfather; it may have been made in the 20's or 30's. It had gotten so rusty that it wouldn't slide back and forth anymore. I had the same light bulb moment you did, and soaked it in a citric acid solution. It cleaned up to a perfectly functional condition. I still use it regularly.

Went to the garage and decided to clean it out. Threw out a bunch of stuff, hung a bunch of tools, cut the rickety bench the last owners left in half and shortened the legs. Made a casting bench out of it just tall enough to match my folding camp chair. Powerwashed the cement slab. Looked so good after it dried, I broke in the bench and cast 300 Accurate 31-157's for the 30-30 I haven't shot yet.

Thats a great score! Being retired, I actually find that I enjoy sorting weights. And brass. Sure, it gets tiring sometimes. I sit in the shop door surrounded by several buckets and sip on a beer and listen to the radio as I sort them.

As far as smelting goes, I have a few buddies that are willing to help. Usually they have something of their own to melt, but usually at least one of them is available to help me. It goes a lot faster with 2 guys. It helps that we are all retired!

Loaded 100 rounds of 45acp and primed lots more. Lube/sized a butter tub of Lee TC 0.451". Sure love the Lee gang mold.
Went for a walk to stretch out, and came to the gunsmith shop. Had to stop for a chat and browse. Found a brick of CCI 400 so took it home after paying the price.
Sharpened two chainsaws getting ready for tomorrow. Being retired, I try to get a couple hours of bucking wood at the farm and bring it home. Even ran the log splitter nearly an hour. About 3 cords home so far with a huge white oak to buck. It's been on the ground a week, drying a little with the leaves sucking out the moisture.
Being retired is sure nice. Our club range is declared "essential" as 7 different LEO units train there. Me too.

Hi all,
I cast up a little over 13 lbs of 200 gr SWC (HG 68) with my new Mihec 6C mould. Once it got to temp, it really cast some nice bullets fairly quickly. The alloy I had in my pot was 16:1, which I think will be just fine since this mould is a no groove profile and I plan to coat them with Hi-Tek.

After that I stared at the bucket of mixed brass for a minute while sipping on a cold beer. Even after offering it a few more handfulls of brass it still hasnt sorted itself which is quite unfortunate.

I really need to start sorting brass in small amounts instead of waiting until there is a full bucket.

Loaded 116 40 S&W HPs... The mold is the NOE HTC 401-188 - these all had the full hollowpoint.

I'm used to casting/loading for about 3 pistol matches a month. There's no matches so I have a big pile of loaded ammo. :(

Need to cast some more.

Since I'm out of the boolits I use for 40 S&W, I cleared my RCBS chargemaster lite of AA #7 and am going to reload it with AA#9 to load up all my 10mm and 357 sig boolits. :) Guess I'll load all of these too.

And all I did today in the Reloading Room/Garage was clean it up and get rid of all the empty 12 pack soda boxes that the wife and daughter throw on the floor out there instead of putting them in the Trash Can.

Between yesterday and today, I loaded 1000 223's, sized and lubed 1000 9mm's, 500 30-30's, and 300 223's. Cleaned up the reloading room from the move here in December. I can actually find things now. Need more 223 brass to load. Still need to finish the 9mm's, about 2000 left. Then all the brass will have been loaded during this quarantine. Haven't been able to go to the range this whole time so I decided to make good use of the time.

I REsorted my once fired 9mm brass by headstamp (same companies, different variant stamps).

I REcleaned my once fired 9mm brass (tumbled in walnut hull and store a while back. Got a bit dull, and I've gotten into wet tumbling recently, soooo...).

Yes, I've reloaded all my stock, even went to the range. But a lot of other activities here have been shut down by the stay at home order, so I have extra time.

Yesterday I loaded 100 303 British, ran out of boolits so cast up ~400 more.

Made up a PIF box for a mold that is on the way.

Today is going to be cut grass here and @ the farm, 4-5 hours worth. Then size the 303 and load the remaining 70 rounds.

If I'm still moving after that, start casting a batch of 311284's. And maybe finish the small batch of Toys For Tots toys that are in process on the bench. Goal is 120 by Christmas, have 70+ completed now.

This house arrest continues until Labor Day, I might have my list of stuff to do whittled down to a manageable level.

I didn't close the door right behind me and 2 Quail followed me into the reloading room. I heard them, turned around and they freaked. The male went behind the milling machine and I was able to scoot him out the door. The female got between the reloading bench and window trying to go through the glass. She got behind the brass tumbler so I finally put on gloves, caught her and got her outside. Quail have to be one of the dumbest birds. There are still feathers all over the reloading bench. LOL

The pair were too small to make a good appetizer but I was thinking about it. One of the oldtimers (look whose talking) here that I used to hang with kept a sack of grain in the barn and would throw the Quail a hand full regularly. His Quail were twice as big as the ones at my place. Been thinking about getting a sack of grain.

Shot 100 38 Spl wadcutters the other day, so I deprimed and tumbled.

Decided to put them in the corncob tumbler, the one I haven't used in a couple years since I went with walnut media.

Now I remember why I quit using the cob. Out of 100 shells, 81 had cob fragments stuck in the flash hole.

That's 81 flash holes I had to clean out with a paperclip. Which means I had to handle each piece individually to ascertain if the hole was clear.

I'm done with corncob media. At least, this specific corncob media.

Loaded and tested an experimental multi-ball load for .38 S&W. Used pure lead (more or less) cast in a Lee .360 RB mold atop .3cc of Trail Boss. Weight of cast projectile (according to the mold box) 70 grains, so total payload about 140 grains. Winchester small pistol primers, Starline brass. Test revolver was a 4" Colt Police Positive with a good bore and solid lockup. Recoil and noise level were both negligible. Accuracy with the fixed factory sights at seven yards were spot on for elevation & a little left (because I am old and not a very good shot these days). Both projectiles impacted within 3/4" of each other and in most cases with the holes connected. Overall groups around three inches or so. Penetration target was a heavy plastic gallon jug filled with water. Both projectiles penetrated both sides of the target. Initial test was with a single projectile, but the factory sights placed that projectile eight inches low at 7 yards. If anyone actually cares about experimental loads in .38 S&W, I've got a line on a used chronograph and will perhaps do some more detailed/documented testing at a later date. Disclaimer; if you got one of those old break-top revolvers that prostitutes used to carry in the 20's & 30's... don't try this load in that gun. In fact, don't shoot anything in it. They were never intended to last as long as they have and most I have seen should have the firing pin removed and be put in a shadow box to look nice.

I shoot them as cast with 2 coats of the original Ben's Liquid Lube and gas checked.

Then loaded said boolits in a box of .318 Accelerated Express.

And turned the fuselages for 7 golden age taildragger toy planes for great nephews/nieces.

Then set the South Bend so I can convert a batch of 375 H&H's in 350 Rigby Magnums.

This is yesterday’s efforts put into practice today.....

I loaded up a 100 284 Win to use today in F-Class practice. 900 yards and shot several groups a bit less than 4” x 8”. It was very windy, gusting and switching directions faster than I could react. I had some/more lateral spread than normal. I am usually in the 2”x 5” range. It was fantastic practice. Hopefully they can start holding matches soon.....

Today was my turn to have the bench I share with my wife the painter. Two bedroom apartment living means compromise. I have a new RCBS press mount primer so I primed up 20 50-70 cases. My Sharps 1863 carbine looks very good but I didn't know for sure if the firing pin was OK. Guess I should have told the wife before I touched off a primer. Anyway it works so I proceeded to melt some SPG and lubed up some 450gr cast bullets. Just starting out with black and cast so that was enough for today. Feels like progress.

Accurate powder has pressure tested data for the 50/70 if you want to try smokeless, I've shot it for years in a Trapdoor, some of the pressure tested loads they published are lower than an equivalent black powder load. To me that is pretty important in a 150 year old rifle.

Accurate powder has pressure tested data for the 50/70 if you want to try smokeless, I've shot it for years in a Trapdoor, some of the pressure tested loads they published are lower than an equivalent black powder load. To me that is pretty important in a 150 year old rifle.

I have a couple of cans of 5744 so I may try it in the 50-70. Will be using it in my 45-90 High Wall.

Finally got a chance to try my new molds for .223. Didn't have a lot of time to play, but I'm having fun learning the ropes. A bit different than .45cap. I'm looking for cheap 50 yard blasting ammo for the AR's. My wife gets her jollys off doing mag dumps and can burn a lot of ammo in short order. Even with newyorkistan's 10 round mag limit. Going to PC and try with and without gas checks. Without would be good because I can save another $.03 on each round.

Hi all,
I just got some Starline 45AR brass in from Midway, so I loaded up 100 rounds for my Mod 25-2. Fifty rounds each Hitek coated 200gr HG68 (MP Clone) and PC/Hitek 220gr RN over 4.0gr Bullseye. Just wanted to see which shoots better.

Mike

We each shot 100 rounds out of our 270's, his a Ruger American and mine a Winchester 70. Each shot several 1-1.5 inch groups at 80 yards. Very happy with that. He put around 200 rounds through the AR I just built him and I ran 100 rounds of CCI SV through my CZ455. It shot ok, it was a bit windy 10-15mph, 1.5-2 inch groups. Its usually less than an inch without wind. We ran 50 rounds of 38 special with the Elco HP boolit loaded over 2.8 grains of Red Dot through his 642 and my Colt Official Police. Shot very well. Lastly, we ran 300 rounds of 9mm through his SA XD9mm and my Glock 26, also loaded with the Elco boolit over 2.8 grains of Red Dot. Was an awesome day. Beers and Cigars afterwards.

I took apart 90 .308W cartridges. I no longer have a Rifle that I need them for. Added the Bullets to my stash for future use for my '03 Springfield. Cases have been traded with a friend for.45acp cases.

I prepped two new 8 cav MP molds, both the same 9mm design. Hopefully they'll be put to work tomorrow. I'm trying to get my dual mold technique down. When I do, using a ProMelt with a feeder pot, I may be able to cast at a rate of 1500 boolits an hour.

I also drifted the rear sight on my G34. I actually started doing a lot more accuracy drills, and now the zero at 15 yards that was "good-enough-for-govmint-work" is consistently a foot left at 35 yards.

So, today I was shooting 10mm in my GP-100... I was missing occasionally, but doing OK. I pulled out my G35 and occilated between the 8" plates at 15 yards and a 1x2' plate at 50 yards for 15 rounds with all hits - so I put the gun up and went home. ;)

Good to leave on a high note. I hope diligent practice will make me as proficient. Off to the range I go this AM, casting this PM.

I cast about a 5lb pile of boolits but got really frustrated with my 45 cal 396 grain boolit...

I'm thinking of just not casting those anymore and casting the 45 cal 350s.

Tonight I kept trying to get good boolits and was over heating the mold, so I brought out another mold and was doing 3x 40 cal and 1-2x 45 cal mold...

So, now I have a bunch of the 40s -- probably 12-16 times as many-- as the 45s, but I think I might just change my 45 caliber mode from 396 to 350...

I think they will fly flatter, a bit faster and probably just as far.

Casting and shooting boolits has sooo many little things to think about. I think that might just be why I like it. ;)

I try to make my last shot of my Prairie Dog trip a hit. No matter what my hit % is, I feel better leaving with a hit.

I loaded my first hand load ever yesterday. A skeeter load for my Ruger NM Bisley Blackhawk in 44 Spl. Picking up the pistol next week, so should be able to shoot it then. Pretty excited.

Started loading up some cast 45acp from a Lyman 452374 single cavity mold. This will be my 3 loading from this mold. The first small batch was with COWW alloy and those I loaded 20 with AA#2 and AA#5 at just over the starting load listed for that bullet in the Lyman Pistol & Revolver book.

These bullets are now cast with straight range scrap (pretty soft) which I have 55 of and then I have 67 that were cast with the same range scrap with 10% print type added. The print type is of unknown origin but I believe it is either monotype or foundry type as it is pretty hard and brittle.

Right now I have the 67 loaded with 7.1gr of AA#5 at OAL of 1.250". The max load listed is 8.2gr and the start load was 6.7gr.. The soft range scrap will be loaded the same and then to compare against the harder alloy.

The AA#2 was sporadic and the #5 held a nice group but was consistently low. See if a little more speed helps.

Time to do some serious cleaning up both at the reloading bench and at the casting bench. Found lead I forgot I had and a couple of coffee containers full of range scrap. A morning to melt everything is in near future.

Brass prep. Shot the Military Bolt-gun match at the local club, so I have empty brass. I had to get into my stash of spare brass, pulled out some weighed piece to fill in the perceived shortage of prepped brass. I need 70 loaded cartridges per match, and I prefer to have 5 or 6 spares just in case.

Deprimed and cleaned the primer pockets, then washed the 7.62x54r brass, and scrubbed the necks with a nylon brush. Laid it out on the porch to dry.
Annealed, neck sized, and primed the brass.

All ready to load up. I better go check the boolit cache. I may need to lube and weight sort some of those too.

After bring out of office and at home for 10 weeks, lots of big loading runs are complete.

So, just for fun I loaded 5 rounds of .45-70 with my old Lee handload set. Still pretty neat to turn them out with a few whacks and a small scoop of powder.

Tomorrow maybe the Lyman tong tool and a few .38 Specials.

Got some powder more to my liking, and loaded up a ladder test for the Marlin 1894S 44mag; using the Lee 240gr RN, PC, that has mushroomed well in water.
You see, the rifle's locking bolt was not fitted properly; but I have fitted the new one correctly! Now the action doesn't open upon recoil anymore, and I think it will be able to group. So I will try to develop a good deer load.
