Wow, fun day in the reloading room. Started using the two Lyman lube/sizers I refurbished last march and what a surprise I got. Went to load the top punch into it's dedicated location on the main shaft after opening up the lock screw and found that there was no hole drilled in it for the top punch. So had to change out for the other luber I had and got the job done. Just sent email off the Lyman along with this and a few other images of the problem. lol

Curious if this is a custom spindle, doing big flat/wadcutter style boolits, just having a flat spindle in there may work as well as a top punch.

With the set screw being an end-of-stroke stop on the up-swing.

Just guessing here.........

Post above beat me to it while I was typing, day late, dollar short, story of my life.

Tried to form some 7x61 cases from 300 Win Mag, ugly results, may try a very light anneal on the neck tonight, then try again. I anneal at night, with the lights outs only light is the torches and a TV with an old film noir movie going (dim screen, dark music, great for a little reloading alchemy). Never have had any luck annealing before reforming before always crumpled the shoulder. This case may be the exception.

Did have some success converting 7mm Remington Mag. Takes almost as much effort as 300 Weatherby to 300 H&H.

LIGHTLY annealed some 300 Win Mag and some 7mm Remington Mag, then tried to re-form. The 300's appears to be too much, too fast but I don't have any intermediate dies to step it down sequentially. The case is too fat/long to fit into anything I have. Not sure there is any standard dies that will fit the bill.

The 7 mag work very well:
248744

As a plus it formed much easier than the shells that had not been annealed. Figure I'll make up 20 of them, just because I can, then go back to the factory brass.

Plus I inventoried both primers and powder while I was waiting for it to get dark enough to anneal. It was time to update my excel spreadsheets. Should have done this last week, I would have ordered another case of small rifle primers while there was a group buy at the club.

Na, 15meter. Not a custom spindle. Bought two handle conversion kits for my two lyman 450's. One just somehow missed getting the top punch hole drilled and it got missed in the inspection process

boy do I like that!

What kind of velocity are yo getting from them? What weight?

Not sure since I have not run them over a chrony. But likely in the area of 1250-1280 at the muzzle. That's with a 390gr boolit. This cartridge was loaded at the arsenal with a 3.89-4.09 gram black powder load for a 1266fps velocity. I'm in the same area maybe. Don't know what granulation they used, 1F, 2F?????? So, the finer one goes to some degree, velocity might increase.

Sized and primed some 7.62x39 for boolits and bullets, rubbed another coat of Truoil on the 870 stocks, painted the steel parts on the new River Rat so it won’t rust riding in the Mule. Then I fed the dogs and ran the tractor in and out of the back door to pack down the ramp I built.

Made a 220 Swift case gage to use with the Hornady cartridge length gage. Fired case and drill and tap for the gage, 5/16-28 thread. Had to order the tap off Amazon. The tap's cost was about equal to one of the Hornady shells to work with their gage. Now I can make case gages for any of the oddball cartridges I load with out the drama of trying to get a custom case from Hornady. Plus the case gage was given to me by a buddy.

Won't work with the 22 Hornet though. I don't know if there is enough meat on a 221 Fireball case to work. May try that tomorrow.

After a Summer of not being able to go to the shop in the basement due to my knee replacement surgery in July, I'm finally able to get up and down steps again, so one of the first things I did yesterday was fire up the old Lee 4-20 and cast up a hatful of Minie Balls and bullets for my Maynard Carbine in preparation for my return to North-South Skirmish this weekend at Ft Shenandoah, Winchester, VA this weekend.

Today is lube day...I found the remnants of an old can of original Crisco and dragged out a block of beeswax and some anhydrous lanolin and a chunk of carnauba wax to make up a couple of pounds of my modified Emmert's Lube to make the bullets slick. I pan lubed the Minies first and have just remelted the Emmert's to do the same for the carbine bullets. Tonight I'll finish sizing and loading them so I can pack the car first thing in the morning. Then I switched over to 38 specials and wow are they easy to size ahahaha. So easy I didn't notice when a 357 case made it's way in to the mix which I always tend to catch just by the increased effort needed to size the case.

I wanted to use boolits sized to .357, but couldn't get them to fit my barrel 'Plunk' test to my satisfaction. I used 3.7gr of bullseye and am happy with the results. Nothing today, but did read my Lyman 4th edition Cast Boolit handbook.
Yesterday the polisher did 3 batches of pistol brass (357, 38spec, 45acp) and a batch of 30-30 win.
Loaded 50 rounds of 30-30win with Lee 150gr flat nose gas checked and lubed in my old grey Lyman lube/sizer to 0.312".
H2400 16gr to push the load down the barrel of a NEF break action 30-30 win.
Should be a great deer load for the 12 y.o. grand daughter.
Sorry no pics.

Smelted down ~ 100 lbs. of lead of various types-- cast boolits from dead guy stuff in calibers that I don't load, bunch of what I suspect is pretty close to pure lead--boolits from a North-South skirmish match and a batch of range lead mixed with a bunch of 22 rimfire boolits.

The rimfire batch was interesting, it was given to me by a buddy, I didn't check it, just tossed it into and empty pot and set it on the turkey fryer. Went over to stir it and skim the dross off the top when there was a rather nice BANG, Cool beans man, never had a live round go off in the pot before.

And the tinsel fairy didn't get me:drinks:

Had a Lee 8x56R seater die modfied for the "Oldfeller Frankenstein" bullet.... Had it opened up to.341" (from .332). A local machine shop did it for me on a lathe for $20... Lee folks suggested that, rather than wait months due to their custom shop backlog.

Also had to shorten the seater plug a bit.... I wanted at least two threads engaged on the seater " top" at my seating depth..

This puts the gas check just at the beginning of the case neck. The finished cartridge feeds when loaded in the clips and functions through the Steyr M95 action perfectly....

I decided to find out if my revolvers had a preference for a particular powder. I loaded up five 50 round boxes of 158 grain RNFP cast boolits using Titegroup, Bullseye, Win 231, CFE pistol, and Win WSH. All loads are near max for 38 special but less than +P.

Weight sorted 9 pounds of Lee C312-185-1R that I cast a few weeks ago. Sorted in 3 piles : 184+ gr, 185+ gr, 186+ gr.
The majority were 185 - 185.99 grains. I'm pretty pleased with the consistency, I used 2 Lee moulds to cast the bunch.

Anything 183 gr I saved for foulers, turned out to be only 10 boolits.
Only 1 boolit under weight, it goes back in the pot.

I modded my LNL AP a bit more and blew through 100 rds of .38 Special. I thought I was running above +P loads but it turns out they're just .38 SPL+P which is good. I don't like loading hot into .38 brass and would rather use .357 brass for that. I cranked a box of Lee 105 SWCs with 4.9gr PB (the +P loading for 110gr XTPs) as well as a loading of 4.4gr PB which is standard pressure. I'm predicting good results in my j-frame and needed some ammo to test the Dan out with anyways. Between this and the box of .45 ACP I made I should already be 1/3 through the can. At some level I'm just trying to consolidate the powder collection by loading it up. :D

I did some repair on my priming for this press. The adjustment for the shuttle wouldn't go back far enough to line up with the tube so I ovaled the hole of the plastic piece a bit more. It seems to work now with a lot less jam ups and I only had 1 primer of the 100 where the round didn't have a primer in it. Big big improvement and something that could have easily enough been a technique error. I didn't have to take it apart which was huge.

Maybe I'll crank out some 9mm tomorrow. We'll see. I need to definitely make a few thousand more bullets at this point as I'm way ahead in the other components. Snow's on the ground though and it was supposedly -9 with windchill. Yeah, not casting many slugs in that for sure!

Update on the testing. I ended up loading 7 different powders. I took the laded rounds and my revolvers to the range today and fired off all the loads.
I did find two powders that seem to shoot somewhat better than the rest but not by a lot. The testing was highly subjective in that I was shooting offhand at 10 yards. I would fire 6 rounds from each gun and inspect the target after each 6 rounds to see what was happening.
With all but 3 powders, I was getting consistent groups of three inches with all guns. Those three powders tightened the groups by about an inch. It was noticeable when it happened.
The three powders were CFE Pistol, Bullseye, and WSH.
I expected CFE Pistol and Bullseye to shoot well. I have worked with them a lot over the last few years. The surprise was WSH. It isn't considered a pistol powder and I have never seen or heard of anyone using it before in 38 special. I have used it before in 9mm.
All the other powders performed as you would expect. Nothing bad, just nothing outstanding.

drac0nic

Not too surprised on Bullseye honestly I noticed the same thing compared to Titegroup. Kind of annoys me since I have a 4lb jug of the stuff I'm not quite half way through and you have to crunch out a LOT of ammo to actually use the stuff up. Maybe I'll try another caliber.

I cranked out 100 more loads with PB. I dropped down to 4.4gr instead of 4.9gr (the +P loading) in case it doesn't work out well. I should really test some of this stuff it's gonna suck if there's an issue since I have about 250 rounds of it made now+another 50 or so of .45 ACP.

Debating if I want to do a box of Lee 105 SWCs in .357 mag with 296 next or if I want to do some with Bullseye. Either way, I need a box or two in order to make the call of my people at the range.

Ordered a set of mini connectors for attaching different sensors, (thermocouples) to the pid box. So I can switch from Lee 20# pot to the bake oven for powder coating. Easy install with a Drimmel cutting wheel. This time only took 1 wheel, key to cutting with this apparatus, is going slow and let it cut (real slow) if you go too fast you just tear up cutting disk. Temperature holds close to set point +- 1’perfect for either. 400’ or 725’

I haven't done much in the reloading room lately.
BUT, yesterday, during the House impeachment show, I decided to sort and package Primers.

A couple years ago, I acquired 4 large pill bottles of unused bulk packed Primers.
I knew that style of storage is a recipe for disaster, and have been meaning to repack them into Winchester packaging that I have saved. There were a few thousand primers, so I hadn't felt like spending that kind of time on a project like this, until yesterday.

I also spent the time to inspect them and sort out any that may be of different manufacture. I also compared them to others I have in my stash, to see of the anvil style and glue/sealer color matched anything, so I could have an idea of what they were, since the pill bottles only labeling was in black marker "lg pistol" "sm pistol" "lg Rifle" "sm Rifle".

It took several hours...but I got 'em sorted, packed and labeled (3 and a half bricks) ...and finished before the pundents started yakking about how the Hearing went.

The Large Rifle primers were that only bottle with mixed manufacturers...and that was luckily only 6 out of 400ish total, that were different than the majority.
All the pistol primers were Winchesters (WSP/WLP). The small rifle primers were CCI 400 and I have no idea what the majority of the Large rifle were?

Reworked a Lee full length sizing die to be able to resize loaded cartridges that had been previously neck sized for another rifle that I sold in 1989. I broke down a few of the cases to try the empty brass in my two rifles and stuck the brass in both so they all need to be body and shoulder resized. The reworked die works very well.

So I now have about 1700 .223 left do do.

My shooting buddy and I would load 4000 rounds apiece for a week and a half for Wyoming prairie dogs. I had 3 Rem 700 Varmint .223 rifles and had neck sized rounds for 2 of them. We had nothing but educated dogs and had about not quite half of our ammo to take back home. My ammo got consolidated into two 50 cal. ammo cans by mistake and it was not by me.

Since the ammo was mixed and I did not want to get a loaded cartridge stuck in a chamber I just put the ammo in the 50 cal. cans in my basement. That was the last year I went dog shooting. The rifles got sold and I bought a Model 70 about that time and it would not chamber some of that pulled down empty cases. So there it sat until.

I just purchased a MINI 14 and got to looking at that ammo and decided to do something with it. At 50 yards it will shoot 10 shots into a group just under 2.0 inches vertical and .75 horizontal. Not real great but it’s a Mini 14.

I also do about 95% plus of my shooting with cast bullets so it did not bother me that much.

Decided I wasn't going to have enough reloading to do over winter if I wasn't careful. I ended up taking part of a semi-nice day and casting quite a bit. Around 700 Lee 358 SWC 105s and 1300ish Lee 9mm LRNs. Need to get em powder coated now. Probably going to be in the marked soon since my supply of HF Red is almost done. Probably the best $6 I ever spent in terms of casting if not reloading.

I also loaded up 3 primer tubes so I'm probably ready to burn some IMR PB up. I want to do a few boxes of sorted brass and see how accuracy is. Using my Powder Cop I noticed that there's a real considerable difference in some brands of brass (Aguilla notably) compared to others. Not really a concern at milder loads but towards the top of the scale......

Good news was I went by the LGS and they had some more stuff. I scored a Uniflow for $10 with a broken hopper! Off to call RCBS for it. Seems like an extremely well built measure. Hopefully it works well.

The bad news was I also bent the piece of wire the primer arm on my LNL AP goes into. *grumble* I guess I'm calling Hornady too this week. This thing is definitely the weakness of the press.

I loaded some .45 ACP up with tweaks from today's range session. Just a hair shorter and I bet I get a clean shoot out of the stuff. I shot off some .45 ACP and .38 Special as well. Both shot excellently. I don't get why IMR stopped making PB except maybe price. It seemed like a clean burning powder with a nice recoil characteristic.

Went to the lathe and turned myself a primer alignment tool for the LNL AP. Polished and deburred on the shuttle some. Also sorted some brass out by headstamp for 243 and re-packaged it. Then I took some 5.56 brass that was trimmed and primed and stuck it in a case gauge to see how sizing looked. I definitely need to start loading some up I probably only have 200ish 55gr bullets left though which means I need to grab some more bullets. I probably have the rest of the components.

I load these in to 38/357. My SD9VE and my 9mm AR Carbine don't like to feed these at COALs required even when sized to 356. They were really accurate when fed as singles though. I use the Lee 125 LRN for that these days although I find that to be a bullet somewhat temperamental about COAL it does work pretty well. I would make a couple dummies up and see if you can get em to feed.

Loads I've done in the past in 38 spl are 3.9 TG or Bullseye (I prefer Bullseye over TG the groups seem better) 3 gr Unique (powder puff load, dirty,) 4.4-4.9 GR IMR PB (discontinued, what a shame this seems to be a great clean powder)

In .357 magnum I've loaded these up with 8.3gr Bullseye before and 22gr H110. That stuff is use at your own risk as its hot. As I've mentioned in the past I got 1440fps+ out of a 3" k-frame with the Bullseye loading. That's using powder coat with HF Red which is my exclusive way of handling the lube situation.

I have some 2400 and Blue Dot I want to test and have not done such as of yet. I usually start out using the data for 110gr XTPs or similar. This bullet is certainly a staple of casting and reloading in my revolvers.

I saw a setup for a press that would measure your brass length as you went along so you just feed your progressive normally and kick out any brass that needs trimmed. De-prime, wet tumble, and sort 5000 9mm cases (with a few 380s mixed in). Haven’t finished my big tumbler yet still using my childhood Model T Tumblers Tumbler (holds a couple 100 pieces of 9mm). Also, swaging crimped primer pockets as needed.

Friday, I Hi-Tek coated, sized, and weight sorted 5000 NOE ELCO 155gr TC cast bullets.

Yesterday, loaded and shot ladder loads over the chrono and onto paper.

Getting all the “processing/testing” done so when my xl750 gets here all I have to do is set it up and crank out some ammo.

PS-Using the smaller tumbler isn’t horrible gives me time to do the de-priming, drying, sorting, swaging in smaller batches.

Some brands I won't shoot, and same head stamp brass is more consistent in the loading and the shooting.

The as cast diameter is about 0.4625 - 0.4630, so I'll size these down to 0.460. I then tried my hand at HiTek coating...it's about the same level of effort as PC, but you need to be a little more precise in how you measure and manage it. So far, I'm happy with the results, and they came out better than I expected. I can't wait to try these out in my various .45-70s. Ed

Made another set of shelves and did some reorganizing. Still a a couple empty shelves, looks like I need to spend some money to fill them up. It is a terrible cycle, we acquire stuff, then we organize it so more stuff can be acquired. Kind of like watering the grass, mowing it and watering again.

Just tinkering. I sorted about 10# of clip on weights that a friend dropped off the other night. The way they were skinned up looks like he picked them up off of various street corners. He probably did as its a game that we started. Its good to see him carrying on in my absence! Also deprimed and sorted a partial tub of brass.

Re-polished 150 pieces of 30-40 Krag brass after annealing. Waiting on a set of dies so I can load some to try out the new rifle. Should set up the pot to cast some 30 caliber boolits so I CAN load, but a nasty head cold is keeping me moving kind of slow today.

Some new 7.62X54R brass came in today. I ran it through the rifle to be sure it fit. I then ran it through the Lyman M die.
Now I just need to prime, charge and seat bullets.
Then I get to shoot.

I foresee an auto case feeder being a necessity soon. This press is smooth and fast, keeping it fed with cases and primers is going to be the bottle neck.

Threw some .45 auto together. Lee 200 LRNFs with 5gr IMR PB (the 4.4gr loads were stove piping) and a few more with 4.4gr old Nitro 100 (not NF.) The meetering on this seems a bit sketchy so I'm curious about how it does. Seems very much like a "dipper" powder to me. Big flakes and all that. I have about 1/4lb of it, so it shouldn't be too hard to burn up. Getting ready to need a run of .45 ACP boolits if I can get this thing to run right. I should probably throw down and make a few Bullseye or Blue Dot loads as well since that will probably be what I fall back to at some point; I should really be running the loose powders I have in the revolvers since I don't have to worry about cycling the gun.

Got my Hornady parts and my first batch of stuff from Titan. Some breech lock stuff for the APP when it shows up, a set of 450 Bushy dies and a set of Auto Prime collets that I needed badly since you can pay $15 for a set or $3-4 each. Wish I'd have paid once for them. I ended up making 1 450BM dummy to test feeding with the 300gr HPs I have. They seem like they're going to be challenging to seat if I want to use the cannelure and maintain the same case volume as the 300gr Swifts that are significantly stubbier. This seems like it would feed better though.

ED:Yeah it feeds well extraction kind of sucks but I'm not seeing any thing on the bullet. I way over crimped (it looks like a roll crimp) so I need to tone that down and I think she'll run well.

Haha. Have fun!!

Last night I finished sizing about 200 358 Win cases. Last 10 where nickle and Norma brand. Just for sentimental reasons. Both where fired multiple times. One Norma & three nickel split not big suprize really. But that was ONLY LOSSES!!

Cleaned all primer pockets. And cleared about 40 flash holes then primed those.

About 100 Fed cases about 60 LC cases and remainder are mostly PPU. Which usually I just toss. But they where nice cases and recently annealed. So 48 of those got re formed too. Ill keet them segregated.

Should have rigle next week.

Great shooting bullet. I use them in reduced 357 mag and the wife shoots them in 38 Special. She loves the hole punch they leave in the target.
