Hi Taz, We got together one time and successfully traded that kind of stuff between the bunch of us. So, if you have other friends close by, you might try that. Besides, it's a good excuse to get together.

Today I melted down the stash of pewter i have been collecting for awhile. Had to beat it down with a hammer to get it to fit into lead pot. I also made a few bullets like about 100 plus or so mostly 30 cal HP out of a noe mold. I weighed it all wen done. Ended up with 13LBS of pewter. Should sweeten a lot of bullets. Makes the HP's fill out better to.

I cast about 20 pounds total... 7# of Lee C309-200, 7# of Ideal 311413, and 6# of Lee TL314-90-SWC. Now, all I gotta do is GC, size and lube them.

Trimmed 100 Winchester 38 Specials to 38 Med Colt (0.900"), Built a Moon clip rack to sit in a 50 Cal ammo can, built a Moon Clip loading tool, Pulled the projectiles from a whack of 38 Med Colt mistakes. Loaded 100 38 Med Colt. Not a bad day all in all!

Load and test some Acme 100gr RNFP in my Ruger 32H&R Mag's. I used Unique at 2.5gr and they were well under the expected velocity. Going to bump them up some and see what happens as the recoil was very light. I did crimp them long in the groove so that may be the answer to why they were slower than expected.

Almost forgot, one of my bosses gave me a Folgers Coffee Can full of .40 Brass and most of a pound of Power Pistol. I am tumbling the brass now.

Great to see so many getting soo much casting done lately.

Where is everyone getting their lead from now.

Wheel weights are like unicorns in my area now. My last big batches of lead came from purchased range scrap, and a lucky find of dr office xray shielding. Very dirty, lots of glue, etc.
Our recycle centers will buy only, no sales :(

Weather is turning cooler and id like to be casting more, but getting under my comfort threshold on lead.

Lead is still pretty plentiful here. Its sad to hear about states where its hard to find. I strongly believe in networking and its worked well for me. Ask your friends, family and coworkers to watch for you. Watch crags list and the classifieds. Watch our Swapping and Selling section. Sometimes a caster quits the hobby and wants a quick face to face sale. Watch for sales from RotoMetals. Good Hunting!

This makes 10 gallons of 9, 8 gallons of 40, 20 gallons of 223, 2 gallons + of 38, ~1000 peices of 357, ~800 pices of 44mag, ~400 peices of 44 special, 200 6.5, 60 30-30, 200 10mm etc etc etc all cleaned, as shiney as a new penny and ready to load. Cut crimps and prepped pockets and mouths on the last two coffee cans of previously trimmed Lake City 5.56 brass. This was an all week job as I had trimmed six cans worth with the WFT II last week. I trimmed and prepped two .30 cal cans full of my Dad's LC brass a week or two ago and am looking at two coffee cans of converted 300AAC under the bench that still need prepped. This trimmer has been a trooper for at least two years of this sort of abuse but I notice it almost chatters a bit now and then and I hadn't noticed that happening before this week. I got to wondering...have any of you ever worn out the mill bit on a WFT?

Not today, but last week before I headed to the slope for my two weeks at work, I got in 2-3 hours casting and turned out some 450 grain, .511 SWC, some 420 grain .477 WLN and some 240 grain .403 WLN, all from LBT four cavity molds. After sizing and lubing the next day I loaded 100 rounds of 500 Linebaugh with the 450 grain SWC and 9 grains of Trailboss. I also sized and lubed a couple hundred of the 240 WLN for a friend to try in his Buckeye 38-40. I shoot them in a 401 Powermag. Great bullet in the 401 and ought to work well in his 38-40.

Then started trimming 9x19 to 9x18, first belling the case mouths with my Lee multi caliber expander die, then trimming with Lee case trimmer and electric drill, then chamfering inside and outside case mouth with my RCBS tool. Still in the midst of a major clean up down in my reloading / gun room. Got so bad in there that you could barely move little lone work so it was time to finally do something about it. I've been sorting and packaging cleaned and annealed brass, misc bullets and boolits, and since I have far more dies than jacketed bullets these days I'm going to reorganize my dies to the space where I had the bullets stacked on the back wall of my bench and relocate the bullets to the smaller space where I had the dies stacked. A friend of mine owns a local "cracker barrel" style LGS where many of us go to BS and visit on weekends and he has a table full of odds and ends for sale by donation with the funds going into the shop's coffee fund. (He always has free coffee on the go at his shop for the customers.) I'm going to sort out and donate a bunch of my odds and ends, mostly left overs from my tables at local gun shows I've attended and I will put them onto his donation table. Only about half way done cleaning up my shop so far, but I can almost walk around in there now without knocking something over or off the benches and table!

Decided to load my 450 bushmasters w test loads. Aa9 w my accurate 45-280 gas checked. While doing that I remembered why my imr 4198 load fouls. When I did that ladder test awhile back my best loads were at the high end and that’s when I started fouling so I said I’ll just deal w it. Turns out I can’t so hopefully the aa9 will take care of “a good load” without the fouling

Finished decapping and FL sizing (Lyman TC die) the last of 250+ rounds of 32 S&W Long brass I had laying around. Went to use my early model Lee priming tool (with screw in shell holders) but the *@#&% thing was nowhere to be found... it had disappeared into the vortex! [smilie=b:

Being the packrat that I am however, I located another of my old Lee priming tools and went into the box of odd shell holders to retrieve the proper (CC) one. Once again my inner hoarder came through for me!! Primed all of the cases while watching TV. Ran into an oddity, though... about 20 or so of the cases (marked GFL 32 WAD CUT) had retained part of the primer cup in the recess when I decapped them! Now I have to go back with a PP reamer and clean out the remnants of brass before I can finish repriming the last of this batch. I've never had this particular event take place, certainly not in over 20 rounds of brass out of the same lot of brass. :?:

Anyway, today will hopefully see batches of these cases get belled, charged with light loads of Bullseye powder, then finished off with some of the swaged Hornady LSWCs and HBWCs I've been saving for a rainy day. I may also size and lube some of the TLWCs friend Dale53 gifted me on his last visit... I have a .313 sizing die from Lyman that I've been wanting to try out. My K-32 and my little I-frame snub will be well supplied for their next visit to the range! :2gunsfiring_v1:

Any chance the brass in question got wet? I've had brass that I picked up after a rain, months later deprime it and the head of the primer comes out leaving the sides in the pocket.

Another oddity, I wound up with more 45 Colt brass (107) than 38 Special (about 30).

Nice.. when i used to range shoot more, you could see this.. the box, divider and brass all neatly packaged.. usually older shooters.. not the 'gangsta' types shooting the gun held sideways.

I love deer season! I find calibers other than the usual 9mm, 40 S&W and 223. Those Gangster shooters make it hard on an old brass rat, walking around shooting everything in sight and spraying brass everywhere.

I deprimed, tumbled and dried 2 loads of brass yesterday. I've loaded the first load for today while I sort and store away yesterdays clean brass.

Nothing but went scrounging here in Afghanistan. Walked out to range and picked up lead splatter off the steel plates. Going to have my wife mail me my RCBS casting pot. USPS not going to like my flat rate box sent stateside. Stopped by the metal dump and found a M14 mag which was there because it has a dent in the side. Then walked over to one of the firing points for vehicles as I need some 7.62 links. Found the links and about 200 rds of 7.62. Relinked that for testing firing Mk48 and M240 after I fix them.

Today I found my grandfathers bullet mold he made. Drilled holes in maple to use for handles and poured a few .44 call balls all the while talking to him like he was present. He passed before I was born. Put a new rivet in the hinge holes. He probably made the mold in 1870 to 1890s. I still have the barrel and lock. It has five point corners instead of lands and grooves. Similar to Glock barrels.

Tried out sulfur to remove zinc contamination using a cast iron pot at the burn pit. Have XRF from before sulfur will get one post sulfur and see how much good it did. Cast some premium alloy into .310 round ball to use as buckshot. Have some soft lead already cast to use to compare patterns. See if heavy and soft or lighter weight and harder work better.

Received a "new to me" lubrisizer last night. Not sure of the brand. I cleaned and removed most of the old lube (what a mess!) and installed a .309 sizer die. Ran about 40 Lee 180gc just to work the rest of the old lube out.
P.S. While I know guns & bullets are not always P.C. in public, being labeled "That Gun Crank" has resulted in more than a few really useful donations over the years. This sizer as an example. If you discreetly spread the word, you may be surprised what shows up at your door.

Had to empty the bullet trap. I'm using two 5-gallon buckets partially nested, and filled with rubber mulch. The bottom has a disc of 3/4" plywood to stop the heavy loads.
It didn't.
I was shooting loads too heavy for it the handle, and the bottom of the bucket got knocked out. I harvested less than 4 pounds out of it. Dang.

Now I have to make another. I need to go back to the drawing board on this. Perhaps come up with a duplex design, with rubber mulch to stop the lighter loads, backed by a sand trap for the heaviest.

I'll cogitate on it for a spell.....

I'm working my way through the rest of the RD 9mm-130s that are GC'd and PC'd, loading in Win 9mm cases (free range pickups that have been pin washed and inspected) and loading over 4.0/Universal (from Ranchdog's load notes).

When that's finished I'll start on some 45 Auto Rim with boolits (200ish gr) that were cast several years ago, recently sized and PC'd. They were cast from some old Lee 1-cav moulds that were gifted to me a long time ago and make very good boolits (but slowly). Should make for good plinking in a M1917. Probably load them with Bullseye.

Then onto some 45 Colt loads from the other old Lee 1-cav (255 gr sized to .454) - planning on loading them for a lever gun. That will use up all those boolits that have just been sittin' around for a long time. If they shoot good, I'll keep some load notes for future reference. Some of those old Lee 1-cav moulds are a little treasure in and of themselves, even though they are slow going. Taken care of they will cast a lot of good boolits.

I loaded 400 rounds of 9 mm.

But far more worthy of comment was that I had a powder spill. The powder measure retaining bolt worked loose and eventually the whole measure reared up as the empty case riding up the ram pushed on the powder/flare die. Then the fail safe return rod tilted the whole shebang over; nearly a whole pound of powder ended up on the floor.

Well, fortunately the spill was directly away from the open element heat dish I use to heat my basement reloading area (still, I need to think some more on fire safety, here). I swept it all up, ending up with powder mixed with floor sweepings. Maybe I should have dumped it all into my wife's garden plot, but I'm a cheap SOB, and did my best to salvage that $35/pound imported powder.

First thing was to run the powder through a sieve to get out the hair and large shreds of paper and wood shavings. Then I put everthing in a big plastic shallow pan and shook it up repeatedly. The light debris rose to the top over this extruded short grained powder, to be picked out laboriously after each shaking. The small heavy dirt particles stayed on the bottom of the pan, but also tended to stay behind when the pan was tilted and the powder granules rolled downhill, to be taken out by dabbing with adhesive tape.

What was left looked OK and loaded fine. Retesting of velocity and accuracy pends.

Getting ready for the big move to the new house. We've been doing little moves for a while, things that either the movers won't move or that we don't want them to handle. I set up the Magma Case Master II to full length size a collection of .40 S&W brass, both range pickups and some I had purchased here, hoping to get a jump start on getting back to reloading after the move. I added a support to the base the Case Master II is mounted on that will hold the case feeder off of the Dillon 650. It really speeds up the process. I need to fun maybe 3000 pieces through the Case Master II. The Case Master II utilizes a modified Dillon carbide sizing die that has the taper ground straight. It pushes the case all the way through the die much like some of the press mounted dies but is based on an arbor press with a mechanism to load the cases into the sizing area quickly. It will size about 15 cases/minute.

Forecast in a couple of days is pretty bad so I hope to get to some powder coating and more full length sizing and then load up a few thousand rounds for USPSA matches before moving.

This week was all about a couple different cast boolits in the 30-30 . So wile the little darling was out of town for the week I spent a lot of time working out 2 different NOE cast boolits . The first is a plain base 311-165 that I want to shoot pop cans with and after trying multiple powder charges with a couple different powders I came back to where I started - yep a light charge of unique keeps the group's tight out to 50 yards , but I still had fun shooting a hundred rounds or so trying to better it . My second project was to get the NOE 311-180 FN gas check boolits to run a bit faster so I played with imr 4350 and it is showing promise , I just wish I got along better with that side mount scope it just feels wrong . But I'm having a blast - I have put more rounds through my Sears model 54 this year with cast boolits than the last 25 years all together .

Got 2000 more .40 S&W cases push through sized on the Case Master II. I think 2000 is my daily limit. This is the most strenuous reloading activity I've ever done. I've had the Case Master II for 10-11 years but in the past have sized hundreds at a time, not thousands. Tweaked my technique and have the cyclic rate up to 30-32/minute but due to having to do other things it takes over an hour to do 1000. Hope I don't trash my right arm doing this. Can't speak of the S&W; but my brothers.454 Raging Judge(notBull) spit hot cylinder gap powder projectiles impossibly straight in my face. After 3 shots of this and sorry accuracy I handed it back and recommended he send it back. He did, got it back and sold it. Get her a 4-3/4" Blackhawk .41 Mag. She'll love you more for the portable power than carrying a crew-served revolver:-)

I loaded up 10 rounds of 30/30 w/ 33 gr of H380, and 10 rounds w/ 30 gr IMR 4895 and the same RD boolits. I dunno how they will shoot, and it's probably a moot point as the rifle is reamed to 30/30 A.I.

But I had to do something in the shed today. It's nice, sunny and warm so far today....

Scratched my head over setting up my induction heater. The power supply is made for being mounted in parallel in a rack of similar supplies for computer networks and has no instructions period much less for powering the ZVS.

So I annealed a fist full of 9mm brass to swage .401 I words with my new BT die.

Then I emptied my master caster of alloy so I can cast pure lead cores in the AM.

Didn't load, but did set up two pet feeders, one on either side of my SDB, with the left hand side for boolits, the right for pistol brass. Much greater capacity with a smaller footprint on my bench top compared to the trays I used before, and with the advantage of self replenishment of the holding areas.

Experimented with expanding .40 S&W brass to .452 by pushing it into a .444 marlin sizing die with the decapping pin removed. The expanders ball is not .429 in diameter, bought used. Using the die to seat the 175 gr core expanded an annealed case to .460+", didn't move a non-annealed case. It would make a nice HP but the expander ball keeps hitting the core off center. Then running it into a .243 Win. Sizing die gives a nice ogive. Now to make both FN & HP center punches.

Deprimed some 9mm.
Santa brought an SCCY 9mm to Mrs Bookworm, and we went down behind the barn to try it out. She likes the firearm, but it's going to need some shooting to loosen it up a bit. The first loading of the two mags, she could get only one or two in each. I managed to get a total of 4 rounds in each of the new mags. By the time she had fired a hundred or so, I could get 7 in each mag.
Long trigger, but fairly smooth. Long reset bothers me more than her, she doesn't know any better. Practice will help.

Then, I dealt with some of the 'oops' rounds in the "deal with it later" can. Mostly just hammer them apart, and dump the contents in the mixed powder/fertilizer container. The lead goes in the remelt can, punch out the good primers for reuse. Toss the brass in the appropriate 'to be cleaned and proccessed' bin.

Boring work, but it's gotta be done.

Today I annealed another 52 cases. Let them soak while I added lead to the. 40 cal j words that I didn't weight before swaging. I had to drill small amounts of lead out of 2. But I was able to get most of a full bucket of 45’s and another of mixed small stuff. 9mm/380/32. I dont need those so they will sit for someone else and some later date.
I also seperated some 4-600 38/357 mags, a few hundred 308’s, only 66 30/06, but 3/4 a pail of 556, 200-300 40’s & 5-600 357 Sig nickle brasss!

Highlights where some 100 ish 38 supers, couple boxes of 10mm’s, a couple dozen brass 9mm Largos and even a few 50 A&E pieces.

Ooh, All but 24 of the 308’s where berdan primed. Grrr

I modified pet food dishes for reloading (Case feeder? Boolit feeder? Wazzat?).

Two dispensers feed my press. One is unmodified for boolits. The other needed the reservoir opened up at the base so the cases will feed by gravity without getting hung up.

Using these instead of the trays I had before will free up some bench space that is much needed for shop clutter ;^D.

I also slapped together two new frames for HiTek drying. I'll put the 1/4" hardware cloth on later this week.

We fired some of the same lot a couple weeks ago and her barrel leaded pretty good. They were some that I loaded back when I first started reloading. So next I'm going to pull them down and relube them and take them to the range. Never had it happen before, but I never let any others sit around this long before. But now the bullet lube will be back up to powder coating.

BTW the cordless drill was a sears Craftsman........ not going to be able to get a replacement ;)

I was at a used tool store a couple years ago and they had bins of most every brand of cordless drills, cheap.

I tore down a Makita 9.6v as I knew it was brushes to find there is no way to replace them. I also found no metal bearings outside the motor, all the shafts ran directly in the plastic body. A pair of those 9.6 Makitas lasted 22 years, so I trust their judgement on plastic and bought the 18v set. LOL

I got 450 #503s culled and sized today. These are from the Arsenal 5 cavity mold. Very consistent through the sizer, I like the mold.

I bought some like that , but they were red, some years ago. I believe it was either Walmart or someplace in Dothan. I don't believe that they were that cheap though. I even got little labels in the front telling me what is supposed to be in them. Since I moved up here and got a shed to handload in the bench is somewhat a mess, and even with my stool I can't stay as long as I'd like.

Cancer sucks.

Sorry to hear that Tom. I hope you feel better and can get some more time at the bench my friend.

Annealed a batch of 9x19 yesterday and put them in small vibrators tumbler over night. Matched them up with cores and swaged .40 j words today.

Finally got around to casting with a couple of new Lee molds I picked up. I use a Lee 401-175 TC in my Glock 35 and they went on sale so I grabbed another. Then I picked up a Lee 358-150 1R for my revolver. Hoping for quicker reloading in my S&W 627 with the round nose over the 358-158 RF. Spun up a few of each last night and today after getting the molds broke in good. All Hi-Tek coated and ready to load now.

It was a sad day in the reloading room today!! After I got it reorganized to my satisfaction, started reloading some 30/30’s , opened my last 1/2 pound of SR 4759!, now need to find a replacement powder. 😒☹️Got a lot of unique and some IMR 4198 so I’m good for now, just using up my half pound lots of different powders. Got TrailBoss also but not ready to go down that road yet.

Will changing out the brushes restore the drill??

Never thought to try... was a direct short ... I think the switch as it was shorting out in the off position..

replaced it with a even older chraftsman 12 volt drill

sears would replace the drill ... but not the batteries

Cordless drills ... cheeper to buy a hole new set than replace 2 batteries

Waiting on my NOE expander plug to arrive in the mail tmro, I primed 50 5.56 cases and emptied my powder measure of Promo. Filled it with W748 and set it to throw 14.5 grains. 748 meters SOOO much better than Promo through a Uniflow.

Sizing and cleaning 303 brass and searching for some advice on cast 5.56 ar reloading. We really need an ar subforum...

F**** Cancer. You're too good of man to go out that way. Fight. I wish I was closer.

Thanks. I did get to the range today. Lori took me because we needed one more day out before she has to face her class again. I enjoy shooting my two single shot rifles. I took one of my handguns, but never unholstered it.

Where'd you get the boxes and labels? Are those from the new site sponsor?

these boxes and labels are what the new sponsor sells.

I bought them before they became sponsors. they make for an economical compact way to store cartridges.

I have boxes for all the handgun calibers I shoot :)

here's a couple

I sized and deprimed the rounds that I fire formed yesterday and they are now in the tumbler getting all nice and shiny. Later I'll sort and inspect them.....again

And I cleaned the rifles that I shot yesterday. No leading on either one, but there was some powder fouling.

Used my new NOE expander to load MP227-75 in ladder loads with W748 from 14.5 to 16.5 in half grain increments, 10 for each load. Gonna try to get to the range with the AR tmro.

I still have a bunch to go.

Are you lubing the cases first? I understand the die is carbide, but it really helps. I started lubing pistol cases when I did some marathon reloading sessions a few years ago; saved my arm for sure. It's so smooth I have continued even on batches of 200-300.

Yes, I use Dillon case lube when sizing with the Case Master II but thanks for asking. It was a game changer when I discovered how much it helped with that device. It would be very tiring without the lube when sizing thousands. and it doesn't make the tub of the case feeder too sticky. (I made a setup that lets me use a Dillon case feeder on the CM II.) It cleans up easily. I still have 3 USPS Tyvek bags to go.
