Hey! It only got up to 108* yesterday, so I'm sure the garage was only 120* or so - with no air flow!
I need to rearrange the casting room in the basement, and you can come over here for a boolit casting day.
Sounds like a great idea.

Find a company that replaces furnaces and get a squirrel cage fan from a dead furnace. I mount one blowing down the pathway between my benches and it allows me to cast comfortably even when the temperature is pushing triple digits.

I did that years ago in the garage & it works the charm.

I pan lubed and sized some Lyman 225 gr. 45 cal. LRN bullets I cast from 1/2 Lyman #2 and 1/2 stick on wheel weights. Sized to roughly .453" and I lubed them with Speed Green. I am going to try them in my 45 Colt SA. Maybe over about 5.0-5.5 Trail Boss to start...

I haven't tried them yet. Been raining for a while and the SO range is where I usually go. The ones I loaded w/ 5 gr. of BE shot into a tiny group @ 25 yards A bit high at to the right, but I didn't do any scope adjustments, just shot to have fun. No, no pictures... altho I should have taken a few....

I was going to put the same charge as I use in my 9mm, but I'll save that for next time...

I went to the range and fired the above mentioned load @ 50 yards. I did adjust the scope a bit to put my groups to the left a bit, but didn't change the elevation. The 6.6 gr charge of Bulls Eye was about like shooting a loud .22 mag. Recoil was almost nonexistent. It grouped well, but about 4 inches high. I didn't make any more scope adjustments because I was just shooting to have fun, and the gunsmith took my rifle home with him to re-chamber it to 30/30 A.I.
The heavier loads did group a lot closer to POA.

Cleaned the 30/30 brass that I fired yesterday as well as the 9mm . I left the 9mm cases in for a while, not because they were dirty, but because I wanted to watch the NASCAR race. Then I went back and trimmed a few of the 30/30. I HATE trimming brass.

I put some gas checks on my remaining RD boolits I cast the other day and "dipped" them per the old RD instructions. I managed to find some mineral spirits so I found my last bottle of LLA and filled the remaining space w/the mineral spirits, shook the daylights out of it and still had to take a screwdriver to mix it up well enough to use. I now have about 30 "dipped" boolits with a light brown sheen, and the noses are clean, except for one that I tipped over.... I wonder how long it will take for them to dry in the Alabama heat.......

I'll probably give them a coat of JPW in a day or so. It dries hard......and no leading.

Got time to test a couple of moulds. Lyman 158 WC and Ideal 115 WC. I really liked the 158, could not hit a barn with the 115. That was the one I really wanted to work well. As cast was just to small, at the widest part I could get .359 but the upper driving bands were smaller.

I have no idea where the red lube was hiding in my 450... Has had 2.5 sticks of 2500+ run thru it since red was used. I really need another 450 or an RCBS. I do not use the Star for small runs. And I need a flat top punch!

Those were 160 gr. boolits. I finger lubed them w/ some old RCBS lube, sized them and then dipped them in JPW. They ought to dry in 24 hours or so.

Did you ever do something that made absolutely no sense? I went to the shed and primed 20 30-06 A.I. brass, filled them with 47 gr. of Varget, and was going to load some 180 gr. GameKings. But noooo, I found some cast boolits that weighed 175 gr after loobing, sizing and with a gas check, so I commenced to loading them instead. Now I've been handloading since I was 19, and I'm well past that now. I have a feeling that I'm going to get patterns instead of groups with that load. What I was thinking I have no Idea. If they do shoot well I'll be surprised. I could lie and say I want to see if the brass fireforms any better, but I'm kinda anal when it comes to my brass....Sheesh!

sigep1764, me too. I prepped a hundred RP 223 brass (fls'd and trimmed). These were range pickups that appeared to be once fired factory loads. They had been wet pin tumbled and very clean. Then I went ahead and primed and loaded them with 50 gr Dogtown bullets and the last of my WC844 (sure gonna miss the CHEAP surplus powders). These will get fire formed in a bolt gun and dedicated to that rifle. I might even debur the primer hole and outside neck turn them before they are loaded again. Yeah, brass prep is a PITA, but "it do make a difference."

It's been very hot and humid here the last few days, so afternoons have been spent inside at the bench. I've managed to get a few chores out of the way.

I cleaned up an old .445 RB Ideal mold that I purchased only because I wanted the Single Cavity Lyman Handles. I got the handles and mold for just $15. I do have a 44Mag so the .445 RB could be used for plinking I suppose...but I figured I'd get some practice on mold tune-up with one I didn't care much about. It had a lot of lead splash on it from past use...I soaked in Mineral Spirits overnight but that didn't get under the lead very well. I then gave it a little spritz of Kroil and let it soak another overnight. That lifted the lead. So today, I polished the mating surfaces with green scotchbright pad and verified all the vents were clean and rust free. The sprue plate screw had the point of a Screwdriver still stuck in it. I took a screwdriver and a small light hammer and knocked it out (easily) put a little light oil on the sprue screw and set screw. Polished the underside of the sprue plate with the scotchbright pad again. The boolit cavity looks pretty good so I left it untouched (nice patina...no rust) I put the handles on it again and verified it opens and closes smoothly with no mold gaps (visually to a strong light). I'm please with the results...especially for a free mold that came with the handles that I wanted. Another day or two and the temperature should come down a bit and I'll fire up the pot. Its gonna be 99* up here in New England today....yikes!!!

Loaded up some 9mm test rounds, as well as some .45 ACP ones for CC SD loads. The 9 MM with 124gr LRN & the 45 with 185 gr.. HPXTPs. Both were chronoed today and worked out OK with MV averages at 1086 & 1024 fps respectively. Std. Dev. on the 9mm were a bit high, IMO @ approx. 22, but the Std. Dev. for the 45 was approx. 13 & that is looking much better. Like to get under 10s, so some tweaking is in order , IMO.

Still some refinement & more testing, but I am happy so far. I really like doing load testing with different combinations of components & particularly when there is a purpose, like for hunting, target accuracy or SD, etc. & not just plinking/shooting at tincan rounds.

Got a box of 125 gr. HP XTPs to test in the 9mm, the 38 Sp. & 357M next.

Going to make up some more LSWC rounds as well, I think. Gonna see how fast I can push them to get in the upper FPS ranges where it transfers well into the SD parameters I am looking for right now. Trying to find the right combo to make for good knockdown/penetration with not being too hard on the hands/wrist.

Going to rain & storm off & on this weekend, so I think I will be doing more loading & testing of this type in the next couple days.

Fun fun!

My last post in this thread I mentioned running out of WC844 and how I am going to miss those cheap surplus powders.

Well, to my surprise, I ran across a jug of DP73 that I forgot was in the storage locker. Owww-weeee, says I! There are a few loads listed on the label, and the sheet that came with it says use AA2230 load data times .95.

I also had a batch (97) of 1x fired PMP (origin South Africa?) head stamp .223 that Felix had given me years ago. It would not chamber in my bolt gun, so I ran it all through an RCBS small base die, and that fixed it. Several pieces needed trimming, so that was done on the Forster hand crank.

They were primed with Rem SR primers and loaded with Dogtown 55 grainers for fire forming. Charge weight for the DP 73 worked out to 21.5 gr for an estimated 3086 fps. The first couple loaded were fired out back and all looked well. The rest were loaded, bagged, and labeled for next range trip. After fire forming, these will get another trim for uniformity and maybe an outside neck turn, if needed.

Ever so slowly I am getting all my odds and ends chores done, and the loading room is getting cleaned up (well, a little anyway).

What I did today is what I have been doing for two weeks straight. Clean up. A long time friend passed away this spring and left me in charge of the estate. He never thru anything away and bought in multiple amounts.
Yesterday I found a very large box of shotgun components. Today it was polish media and lead, lots of lead. 1400 pounds of COWW cast in bars 24 pounds each. Adding that to the 800 pounds of bars and cast bits and 2000 pounds of range scrap makes me think I need to "get the lead out".

I did something stupid today in the reloading room!! I was reloading 38 Short Colt and had set my powder drum to 2.2gr. Well... 55 rounds into it I realized that my drum was getting emptier far faster than it should. It was dumping 3.2gr of Bullseye. I am not relishing using my inertial puller on this many, and the round is too short to run above the press to grab the bullet. Any suggestions? I do have a 357 Ruger Blackhawk, what would this much of an overcharge do if loaded and fired in that? And yes, I do realize that if I have to ask - it's not a good idea. Thank you all in advance.

Sent from my HTC6545LVW using TapatalkHad a similar situation going today on some experimental heavy hitting 223 rounds. They were supposed to have 22gr of 10x and ended up with 23.5gr i loaded twenty of the fifty and test fired five at random. The recoil seem a bit stiffer than it should, so i checked the case and found a hard ejector dimple. I then turned it over and the primer fell out of the pocket. Realizing what was going on i pulled the other 19 with a slam hammer and redid them with the proper amount. All is well that ends well. Be safe and remember the basics.

You can create a false top to your press by slipping a short piece of pipe over the ram. I can be metal, PVC or even something like a pipe coupling. Then you can pull the bullets with something just like you do over the top of your press.

.223 WSSM with a 1:7 twist SS Palma Krieger. Testing first for max velocity fun then it'll get bobbed to 23" from 30" and throated for 80-95 grain projectiles.

I know WSSMs are not very popular, but it's short, fits in a 10-round short-action magazine with super long projectiles and should last a while when loaded to ~55,000 PSI instead of the steel vaporizing SAMMI 65,000 PSI. If it burns through barrels even at moderate velocities I have the tools to fix that.

So far there are a few berdan primed cases and a lot of crimped primed cases, so I have my single stage press set up right next to my Lee Classic Cast Turret. If I find a crimped primer, I pop it out and then with the RCBS Primer pocket crimp remover, it gets done right then and there and back in the Turret and on with the reloading. Yesterday my four year-old granddaughter, Lily, asked if we could make bullets. We went in the basement to my reloading room, and I set her up to resize 38 spl cases on my RCBS "o" press. At first she had trouble trouble putting enough muscle into it, but finally started pulling the handle all the way down, and sizing them all by herself. we went through about fifty or so cases. Next time we'll go through the rest of the steps; flaring, priming, etc.

So why does it matter? I am teaching this child how to process something in steps to get to a desired result (which is a life skill) but also that there is someone who wants to spend time with her, and show that she can be responsible and capable. This little girl will learn, as I did, that firearms can be a great learning tool, and that it is possible to know how to handle dangerous things responsibly.

Awesome. Lily is getting a bunch of fantastic guiding memories of you to treasure forever. My 5yo grandson is loading up on nostalgia with me also. Though from the sounds of it he is considerably less focused than Lily about pulling the handle for more than 15 rounds or so lol. But he definitely likes to help Papa work on "Pew-Pews".

You know its pretty cool when you can fill up your powder thrower with HP38 at 5.2 grs and load an array of 45 acp designs! Ive stepped up to this weight and a lil beyond on the 185 gr hp MP mold, the 200 gr Lee SWC mold, 230 gr LEE RN mold, and the jacketed 185 and 230 and found 5.2 to be good. All group at 3 inches at 10 yards freehand out the ole Ruger P90.

My grandfather would take me along to shoot clays - me with a 32 ga double, him with his 1911! (he would easily outshoot me even that way).

I like it!
Just make sure that the round ball is sized large enough that it doesn’t drop free in the case.
If that gets propelled forward into the base of the bullet it’s going to ring the chamber.

I’ve done double round ball loads in 38 special and I love them.
Now I guess I need to load some more this week.

Cleaned a NOE TL358-100-RF and cast about 100 junk HPs cause the pins were not hot ehough. Then did it good stuck base of pins in the melt and proceeded to coat everything in lead and had to use a torch to gently get the lead out of the hex heads so I could clean then mess off. Once I got that done, re-melted the rejects, & got the pot up to temp the pins were too cool. Pressure fed the mold until the pins got hot again, and managed another 150 perfect little 380 hps.

Full-length resized 90 pieces of 7.62x54R brass.

I recently acquired a Finnish M39, to go with my 1930 Izzy 91/30. Of course, the chamber on the M39 is MUCH smaller then the chamber on the 91/30.

Which means, all my carefully neck-turned, neck-sized, annealed brass for the 91/30 won't chamber in the M39.

Which means I have to keep separate brass for two rifles that fire the same cartridge.

Recently acquired a wartime Finn M39. Built on an 1898 action, stamped Sako (S inside the gear) 1942. I've had it a month, really want to shoot it.

I purchased a Lee C312-185-1R mold, just gotta try something. Poured about 8 pounds yesterday, 50/50+2%. Roughly 300 boolits, after visually culling.

I poured in 3 batches, letting the mold cool to ambient temp betwixt batches. I kept the batches separate, then weighed to get an average. I took 4 boolits at a time, weighed 3 of those bunches. Averaged the bunches, then averaged that number.

Averaged 185.5gr with my alloy. They dropped at .313-.314, and by the time I got in to the third warmup they started dropping fairly well. Not bad for a cheap mold.

Next I'll size and check, then sort for weight, then dip lube and load ! Aiming for ~1750 fps with IMR4198

I cleaned and sized the 9mm brass that was given to me at the range yesterday. All once fired . Then I did the same with the 30-06 A.I. brass I fire formed. The 30/30 A. I. Brass I just punched out the primers as I don't have a die set yet, then sorted them under a magnifying glass. I threw three pieces away, one had a slight crack in the neck and the other two just because I didn't like the way they looked.
I did notice that the Remington brass looked better than the Winchester brass, due to the Winchester brass had a slight ring where the shoulder used to be and the Remington brass didn't. None of my brass for the 30/30 is new, but most of it is once fired. Years ago at the range a man and his sons were sighting in their rifles and put each fired round back into the factory box to discard, rather than leave a mess. I asked for it rather than see it get thrown away and have to go sifting through the trash barrel, and ended up with six or eight boxes. I Have plenty I had loaded previously, so I never loaded any of those until recently.

I leave my 45ACP setup on my Lee Cast Turret press set up and ready to go. In the morning if I wake up early, and I usually do, I shower and get dressed and get my morning drink fixed and go in and load a few until I have to go to work. This morning I think I did about 40 rounds. A few here and a few there and pretty soon I have a bunch to shoot.

Put together a new MP mold. It’s been awhile since I bought one and this one had five sets of pins. Went through the pin storage box and shot some Ballistol into every compartment to keep rust away. Keeping it off anything metal is a never ending battle in my garage.

Go for it. It’s fun and rewarding. Gives guys confidence to try it themselves.

I actually did some casting today, have wanted to for some time. Small pile of RCBS 45-300 FN rifle boolits and some SAECO #351 200 grain FN plain base. Going to PC all of them soon as I get more. 45 For my 45 wildcat. And 35's for my Whelen.

Ran another big batch of mixed rifle brass through my ss pin tumbler. Just heading down to the shop to pour it out, rinse it off, and then put it into the dehydrator to dry ...

sized and trimmed 75 pcs of 30/30 brass and loaded 30 with my favorite mouse fart load, but used 165 gr. Ranch Dog boolits instead of the 160 gr. Lee boolits.

I HATE to trim brass.....

I'm playing musical scopes on a couple of rifles. I put a cool old long steel 6x32mm K6 on my Mauser 30-30, a K4/ post on my Marlin 36G 30-30. I know the K4 is good but I'll have to out wait the 200% chance of rain today to test the K6. I'd like the Insurance co to come get their totaled Hyundai out of my loading room.....

I was finishing up some 38 special rounds & since they were visiting with their mom & dad, my 8 & 9 year old grandboys came down to the reloading area & made one round a piece on the LCT as another "familiarization" with what their "Pappy" does to make rounds to shoot. They had fun making their cartridges & wanted to make more, but we were limited on time. So, they are returning next weekend & I am going to set them up with one of the single stage presses so they can make some more rounds themselves, with supervision, & then we will go shooting if the weather permits. Otherwise, we will go shooting on a better nicer day. They really like to shoot.

Between fishing, hunting, shooting, fly tying, camping, etc. & now handloading ( They want to learn to cast boolits & fishing jigs & sinkers too. ;) ), I am happy that they are getting interested in such things. Even though they like their video games, every time they come to visit I try to make it an "adventure" & show them things that we older folks did when growing up for "hobbies" & to have fun, since we did not watch much TV or play many games inside, unless it was raining/inclement weather of some kind. We either did these type of hobbies or were outside doing stuff most of the time.

Anyway, It was a real pleasant time with them.
:)

Now I have to put away the 38sp stuff & move on to 9mm again. Then it is 45ACP. Might do some rifle & shotgun shells after than... Neverending enjoyment, isn't it? Hahah

I slapped together 300+ 9mm cast rounds and then got out my Johnson. I read some postings on how this guy totally destroys the .30 carbine cases and manages to get one formed into a useable Johnson every 10. I annealed a few and tried running them thru the FL size die for the 5.7 Johnson. Did OK. Then I just ran some right into the FL size die, using Lanolin paste for lube. They came out alright also. Since they were a little harder to size than a normal little case that size, I decided to use the form die before sizing them. It sizes the neck to about .25 cal. and pushes back the shoulder. After that, sizing was easier. Stuck em in to the trim die, filed the ends down and now to look up Abuintu's postings on his loads. All that playing around with my Johnson has me worn out so think I'll grab a root beer and veg out watching a movie.

I started the long process of loading up and getting rid of a number of partial bottles of powder that I acquired during the last shortage when they were all I could find.
They will all work in one handgun cartridge or another and will be suitable for practice and trigger time.
Today, I started with WSF. When that runs out, it will be either HS6 or 4756. It will take some time since there are nearly 2 pounds of each.

JBinMN-- I like to hear about people teaching the skill to their children and grandkids. I would like to do the same. Unfortunately, I have a grandson who make spontaneous bad decisions and is smart enough to understand how most things work. I don't dare let him get within arms reach of a gun. He may suddenly decide to shoot someone and would do it.
He once managed to get a car started and nearly ran over his father with it. He doesn't see consequences when he does things.

I agree teaching kids or grand kids what their parent or grandparent does with all that strange equipment is rewarding. I was touched to be asked by a fellow reloder if I minded being added to a list for his wife of resources to help teach his children casting and reloading if something happened to him. My daughter and one grandson have cast a bit. I hope another grandson will have an interest too. My wife has agreed to keep the basic reloading bench available for family for awhile after I pass. So the family getting a firearm will have the opportunity to load up the cast supply and decide if they want to continue using the reloading equipment. Annoying thing is it makes me keep things waaay too organized.

Don't care about the car, How's the reloading room? Or is the car just parked there?
