Set up my swaging presses and then started organizing things to get back to using my main bench to form several new cases I have built barrels for. Loaded up 25- 44mag with 240gr SWC & using some 10-12 year old 2400 I found, that I had stashed some time ago. Started with low end loads & working up a ladder to see how it goes & use it up. Only loaded 25 so far about an hour ago, and have about 75-80 more to go. I am trying to decide if I should just go shoot these first before I load more. If that powder has lost it's oomph a bit, I am just gonna fertilize the yard with the approx. 6 oz. or so that is left.

Decisions, decisions...

my goodness that is a ton o' 9.3x74r!!

As my best friend and old hunting partner used to say: "Lots is good, More is better, and Too Much is ALMOST enough!" :-)

Actually, I imported 1,000 rounds of once fired Norma brass from Germany twice now ... mostly to reform a bunch for my Ballard Pacific No. 5 in .40-90 3" Ballard and some into 3" .410 everlasting brass shotshells. I've kept some for myself and sell the balance to help cover the costs of the exchange (Canadian dollars to Euros) and shipping (in Euros of course) and the Customs fees ($$$). I've sold about 300 so far out of this batch and so I have a few hundred left to sell. Unfortunately though I'm in Canada and CAN NOT ship any of it down to the USA thanks to the current ITAR regulations regarding the import / export of rifle components between Canada and the USA.

:-(

Worked on finding a boolit to chamber in my Swede rolling block. I am working with the Lyman Plains boolit, as cast fit the case mouth perfect, hope it will be a shooter, but still to early to tell, it has passed the first test though, it will chamber without having to resize, fit the sized case as cast, so on to phase two. Here is how they look.

AND I made a batch of 2 percent copper, lead alloy. 25 lbs. The stuff is hard. Like REAL hard. I used a piece of pipe and a hammer to mark my ingots, as I used the same ingot mould as my wheel weight lead, and it took quite a few hefty blows to mark it! They will be cast at a later date. Mostly for my 454, but I may cut a batch with a bit if soft lead to use in 9mm.

Good And bad: Yea and Drat.

The Good: Noe Finished my two Molds and I have them in my Possession; Both are four cavity Aluminum;
First one is for the 50 grain Ranch Dog TL255-50-RF Design;
Second one is for the 65 grain Ranch Dog TL255-65-RF Design.
Al at NOE designed the cutting tool to be able to make both size bullet molds so tooling cost was spread over the Full Group buy of TL255 Molds.
So anyone Desiring a copy of the mold can order it without having a Tooling Charge for it; Just The Wait for production scheduling.

The Bad: The First of the two Lee "Oversize" carbide ring Sizing dies that I ordered to size to SAAMI .25ACP Maximum Case Diameter has FAILED due to the Carbide Ring Shattering after 100 cases were swaged to its diameter.
The second is sizing slightly OVER SAMMI maximum diameter for the .25ACP case.

I believe the Failure was my fault as I may have maladjusted the die and caused the failure from the rim of a parent case over stressing the carbide.
But now I need to order another "Oversize" one from Lee Precision.

The Nice: I have tried out a .277" ID Drill Bushing for a "Shearing" last step in my forming instead of a "Turning operation(s)" step.
100 Cases of 5.7x28mm FN that had been Swaged down to ~.277" body diameter with a short tapered section near the Base and not yet turned down were pushed into the Drill bushing mounted in a used die body and Successfully came out ~.277" diameter from Mouth to Extractor Clearance Cut (ECC) just above the rim. The base for about .070" above the ECC down to the top of the ECC showed clean Brass devoid of the Polymer coating. There was a Thin, fine, ring of sheared Brass and Polymer sittin gin the ECC that was removed by finger manipulation.
These were the cases final Swage formed by The die that failed on the 101st case when I began the set up for the second 100 case box of formed cases.

Now to wait for Funds (next monthly Social Security Direct Deposit).

NOTE: These reformed 5.7x28mm Cases are parent stock for ~.278" body diameter Wildcat cartridges (.25ALRM, .25ALS, .25MACP, .25ALR).

Went out and picked up boolits shot into the snow banks. They finally melted away and the boolits were just laying on the ground.

I noticed a difference between PC'd boolits and non PC'd though. The NOE 45-230 grain HPs shot from a 45 ACP. The ones not PC'd were more likely to expand. I had some 45 ACP JHP's that didn't do very good expanding either. But it was easy to tell the PC'd boolits didn't expand compared to non PC'd. (same alloy and load)

My new Annealeaze machine was delivered yesterday so I had to break it in.....annealed a couple hundred .30-06 and about a hundred .35 Rem. Very easy to set up and it took all of 30 minutes or so to get those done. Plenty more to go of those calibers to go but I'm going to need a couple more canisters of propane before I start on the .223. That'll be a rainy day project.

Cleaned and lubed some baitcasting reels.......

I have some of that under way as well, I leave on a week-long bass and trout trip to Shasta Lake in a few days. The tackle is pretty much ready otherwise.

I took a weird fall a few nights back that broke at least 2 of the smaller toes on my right foot. I have been nursing this injury along gently so as to not miss the fishing trip described above--so far, so good. I still haven't off-loaded the fired brass and unfired ammo from last week's Nevada varmint hunt from the truck, and that needs doing. I DID get the rifles cleaned and back into the safe before initiating the injury sequence described above, but the brass needs tumbling and the ammo needs putting away. In retirement, I am more relaxed about shelving and storing the accoutrements post-trip than I was during my working years, but I crave a bit of order in my hobby areas--present conditions bug me, with stuff scattered. Manana........I guess.

This time of year I shift gears a bit and get into boat & fishing mode, and de-emphasize target shooting and critter blasting. I bought new nav gear and sonar/fish finder for the boat, and took it out to a local lake for its test drive. MUCH BETTER STUFF. Shasta Lake's layout is a lot like a Scandinavian fjord--arms in many directions and an array of inlets and crannies that all look alike to a guy that sees the place once a year. Having a GPS with tracking records can get me back to the base camp/houseboats without much fuss & bother. It's a bigger help when you get fogged in at sundown 8 miles offshore of La Jolla, and can follow the "bread crumb trail" right back to the Mission Bay Jetty's red and green lights.

I reloaded & ran some Bullseye & Red Dot ladder tests I have been putting off with some 9mm 124TC & 102-1R single lube groove to see how they worked for me.
All, pan lubed & sized at .358. Tried them at 357 & got some leading there as well but not too much. This time, I got more leading than I did before at .357 surprisingly, so I am gonna change the lube a bit & the alloy a mite. Have not had any issues with TL using the TL boolits, & these were all Pan lubed, so I think it is in the lube mostly, but perhaps the alloy is too soft for that 9mm ( 50/50 COWW/PB). Gonna have to experiment & shoot some more of them..

Imagine how "upset" that makes me... LOL ;)

I will figure it out though.
If not.. Then I will prolly ask here about it. (Bore is 356.5 slugged,IIRC, and those .357 TL s actually were not too bad with just slight leading, so I am leaning toward alloy change & lube change. TL boolits were no issue for some reason using 45/45/10 tumble lube.)
;)

That's my "doins"..

Take care, my friend. Last couple of years it seems I'm always nursing a broken or sprained toe. Can get ugly, invest in some slippers or sandals to wear around the house to prevent future injuries. Sturdy shoes and maybe a bit of tape are almost as good as that ugly boot a doc will want you to wear while a broken toe heals.

I eventually got it out but it was in pieces and I had a hole in my hand . After the fight I decided to get out the imperial wax and my old Pacific 007 single stage press . I finished mounting the new Lock and Load AP press. Got set up for 9mm, and did a few loads as singles, then got braver and actually used the full feature and had brass in each shell holder on the turret as I got more comfortable with the operation. Went out and shot a few, adjusted the powder volume a tad. Chronographed the shots, checked for keyholing, and all looked good, so proceeded to get into "production" mode. After about 300 rounds, I noticed I wasnt paying attention to the primer tube and was loading minus the primer  Decided to try and slip them thru the press and just get them thru the primer position just to primer a loaded shell. Ended up losing powder out the primer hole into the primer feed mechanism and jambed it. :killingpc:killingpc In the process of trying to get the primer feed working I broke it

Nothing! I spent the last four days rebuilding the clubs outdoor range. I'm whooped. Our club had range boxes and the bullets where not being contained. Now we have a 120yrd field with mountain behind it. Target stands that can be placed at any distance wanted. Mainly the bullets have a good backstop to contain them.

Well maybe not nothing. Does putting five 5 gallon buckets of range scrap into the reloading room count.

Loaded up another 50 9mm rounds w/ BE.....

I am curious to know what you have been loading as far as boolits/bullets weight, & what amount of BE for what 9mm pistol you are shooting..??

I have been loading up 9mm with Lee 124 gr. TC(single lube groove) & 2R (RN) (tumble lubed) using 3.8/3.9 gr. of both B.E. & Red Dot for the last couple of days. Shooting in an SR9. They were the most accurate from 3.6 to 4.0gr. of each powder in a ladder of 3.6 - 4.0. Shot about 300 round of 9mm of different sorts, doing ladder tests last week ( Also shot some 102- 1Rs ( single lube groove) as well, but not loading them again yet.

Still have not worked on the 120gr. TCs ladder tests yet in 9mm either though. That will be next, I think... Might have to shoot some other calibers for a bit so I don't get anymore rusty than I have been now that it is Spring here...
;)

I understand if you do not want to share in open forum what you are using... Even though I just did above. I reckon that if someone wants to try to use what are "below" max. loads in what ever 9mm they own, then good for them. I take no responsibility if THEY mess up somehow... I use manuals & work up my loads whenever I change components ( this time it was new powder containers of same old powders), so I reckon if others don't want to do the same & they screw up then it is on THEM, not me..
;)

Anyway, I am currently loading 9mm as well, just like Tom W., & gonna decide what to do next, after the weekend.

So I went digging on the shelves in my reloading shop to find some .30-06 brass so that I can put together some test loads tomorrow for the 1903 Springfield that I just bought, and in the process I also "found" 2 big bags of 8x57 Mauser brass (about 400 rounds) and a big bag of .25-06 brass (about 200 rounds). They've already been tumbled and cleaned and annealed so they are ready to race. Now I'm going to have to load more than just some .30-06 test loads! LOL ...

I'm using the Lee 120 gr TC lubed with Carnauba Red. Lately my load has been 4.1 gr of BE, altho I have used 4.0 also. I've found that 5.0 of True Blue shoots well and rather snappy, too. I've also used Red Dot and Green Dot, as well as Herco, but I can't remember the charges right now, but the loads are from either a Lyman manual, Nosler manual or Hornady... I look at them and see which suits my fancy. I just shoot targets, hoping I'll never have to use my ammo for people.. My 9mm pistols are a Ruger LC9s Pro and a CZ 75 SP01 Sizing the boolits to .357, and waiting for Dougguy to get a .3585 reamer so he can throat the CZ.
The Ruger is more reliable with the larger boolits, but the CZ does really well with the .357 sized slugs. I did have a Glock 19, and it and the Ruger would eat anything. The CZ not so much.

If I TL anything I've found that plain old JPW works the best for me. I use it a lot on 160-170 gr. GC boolits that I'll shoot from my 30-06 A.I. for fire forming. I have 100 or so that I need to fire this Saturday if the rifle doesn't get too warm... Supposed to be in the mid to high '90s....

I'm embarrassed.......
I went to the SO range today and shot really well, hitting silhouette steel targets @ 100 yards with my SRH .44 Mag. I also shot maybe 25 rounds to fire form some brass for my 30-06 A.I. I got home and deprimed and resized the brass and got 5 cases with lube dents! Now, I'm not new to handloading, but it has been quite some time since I had to resize any rifle brass. I know what I did. The Imperial sizing wax was really hot and I just put too much on the case. I know the dents will iron out the next time I fire them, but I should have been paying more attention....

I got out to the shed today and cast about 12# of 200gr 358430's from a custom Lee mold. It was a warm day (93°) here, but it hasn't rained in a while and so the mosquito population is at a low, so it made for a fairly nice day.

Loaded 25 rounds of 38 special with a vintage Lyman 310
I swear I’m going to switch to all of my reloading on hand tools. Super fun and keeps me from loading all of my bullets too fast on the Dillon and leaving me with nothing to do on weeknights.
I just got my first 310 in the last month with the help of the forum. I love it. Seriously, just got back in from pizza and a couple of beers with the girlfriend and her friends. Decapped 50 rounds of 270 and in the tumbler they went, 3 minutes tops. Loading them up to confirm 10grains of red dot was the most accurate from the range trip this afternoon. Gotta do something with the trigger on this M70. EVERY 22lr I own breaks lighter than this thing.

I loaded 100 bullets cast last Monday out of my BRAND SPANKING NEW .45-210J 5cav mould from ACCURATE MOLDS.
I loaded 50rds of .45ACP & 50rds of .45 S&W .
Had to do some severe die adjustments. I have a RockChucker & a HORNADY L-N-L Progressive. I have .45ACP & .45COLT die sets dedicated to each press, with one .45 die set for .45S&W dedicated to the RockChucker.

I had a GOOD FRIEND who passed away that I spent 25yrs loading with. He became very ill with stomach cancer and passed away in less than a year. The last time he visited my Reloading Room, he wasn't doing very well, but he had brought over some .44 & .45 die sets to adjust for the old RockChucker he had bought to replace the one his stepson had stolen. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to what he was doing when he packed up to go home. His wife was sitting in the car, honking like mad. She wanted to go NOW.
Long story short I ended up missing 2 .45 cal die sets & 3 different. 44cal dies.

He's been gone 2yrs this Past February, I've loaded only .44Mag COWBOY Loads for my Chiropractor buddy. The PROGRESSIVE was already set up for that. I just couldn't bring myself to load anything else. I've just been shooting already loaded ammo a few times at the indoor Pistol Range.
It's been that HARD. Another one of my old COWBOY SHOOTER buddies has just retired.
Both of my friends can no longer find the bullets they've been shooting for so many years.

So guess who got elected to start casting for the both of them. 44-240 for one 45-205 for the other. "Judge Wells Spicer" couldn't find a .45-205, so he settled on an ACCURATE mold. "Bone Bender" settled for a N.O.E. TL44-240-RF in 4cav.

I discovered that both molds are cut from the exact same size mould blocks. Same height, length & depth. Sprue plates are different, all screws are different thread & allen head size. The .44 is 4cav & the .45 is 5cav. But they are so similar It's like casting from a pair of LYMAN 4cav moulds, as I've been doing for 50yrs plus.

And the ACCURATE Mould dropped 5 perfect bullets on the very first cast. I must have spent a good five minutes just rolling those first 5 in my Welding Gloves.

YEP that 100 rounds really was a GOOD DAY AT THE RELOADING BENCH.

Finally got around to building my PID controller. Got it all set up and testes using a small heater then took to the bench to cast my first batch using it. I should have got theis done a log time ago but just kept putting it off. I built it so that I can also use it for my covection oven that I use for Hi-Tek coating as well. Worked like a charm with the Lee 4-20 lead pot.

Took apart the bolt on the Mosin, did some polishing. I'm tired of fighting that pig at the bolt-gun match.
Took some 400 grit wet/dry to the cramming surfaces and got the ridges off, then followed that with 600 grit. Some attention to the locking lug surfaces, along with a bit here and there, and I can actually operate the bolt without smacking it.

A touch of synthetic grease, and done for now.

Sorted 9mm by manufacture name. Chamfered heavy after they are belled. My Lee Die closes the belling immediately and scrapes Hi-tek coating plus about 0.10 lead from the bullet. Now, should I chamfer the inside of the die with the correct diameter and shape diamond rotary tool ????????

Ordered some 303 British brass from Graf & Sons just now. Shuffling through the ammo cabinets and gun safe to figure out what I am taking to NCBS. Stuff to shoot, maybe a few things to sell, yadda yadda. Test-drove some 10/22 magazine loaders I ordered a few weeks back--the Champion crank-turning gizmo surprised me with how well it worked. Two other simpler follower depressors worked OK, but there is a definite "feel" to making them function well that has a bit of a learning curve.

If I understand your problem correctly, the seating die is closing up the case mouth flair so that the case mouths are shaving coating and lead? If that is the case, it should be as easy as turning the seating die body out until it is no longer applying crimp while seating. Of course, that will mean turning the seating stem down to maintain the COL. I've never chamfered an auto-loading handgun case, or had a need to.

Also need to move an AO scope onto the M70 270. Indoor range is only 25 yards and this 10grains of red dot in 270 is prolly more accurate than the current scope will allow due to blurry crosshairs that can't be focused enough.

I just couldn’t bear the the $18 a box price and hunting then running for those rare $15/box deals any longer. It got to the point I only shot the gun at my annual range qualifications which isn’t the best thing for a daily carry gun. $80 all in, not bad at all. Such a fantastic little gun its a shame not to be able to shoot it often.

Nice idea!
:)

I already have a beach type umbrella, so would just need to get that shade cloth or something like it... Old sheet maybe.
I already use a 9x12 painters tarp to catch the brass on the ground, so I make just do this.
:)

Thnx!
:drinks:

P.S. - In the past, when I have used the umbrella & the ground is too hard to shove it in, I have taken a piece of 1-1/2 - 2 inch PVC pipe about 2 feeet long & cut an angle on the end at about 45 deg. I drive the pointy end onto the hard ground when I have to . I use one for the umbrella & I have others I have made for bank set fishing rod holders. Easy to use in sand or soft dirt. When the ground is hard like it is right now being hot & parched, I may have to use one of those "holders" as well.
;)

Thnx again!

SS pin tumbled another 1,000 decapped 9mm cases. Tried to make Ben's Red only to discover I am short of Beeswax. Tried to make Ed's Red Bore Cleaner only to find I am short of Kerosene and Mineral Spirits. sigh. I thought getting the Johnsons paste wax in Canada was the last piece of the puzzle. Maybe tomorrow.

Melted down 225 #'s of range scrap into ingots. Not the yeild I was hoping for but it's all free gravy. Cast about 500 9mm and 50 Lyman 525 and 50 Russian Paradox slugs. Sorted brass. I'm now sitting on a pretty solid supply of 9mm (1-1/2 5 gal pails) and my supply of .40 S&W and .45 ACP is coming along nicely as well.

Just finished resizing about 500 223 cases. After taking a break I'll start messing with the primer pockets and trimming them. Hopefully by tonight I'll have them tumbled and ready to load.

Figured out the adjustable trigger on my M70. I could hold the action by the trigger and it would not release. Got it down to about 2.5 to 3lbs and am happy with it.

Today I packed up one of my 550s and shipped 'er back to Dillon for refurbishment. Within a few hundred rounds she went from solid and true to wobbling around like Dean Martin at happy hour. It was my older one still running the clips instead of nuts on the pivots. I am looking forward to having zirc fittings too.

Picked up an old lee HP GC .430 mold from a member and cleaned it up, casted, and PC'd some of the results. Nothin like an old school HP. Think I'll still roll with my devistors for hunting though...

Over the last two nights Ive tumbled, full length sized, trimmed, chamfered, deburred, retumbled, and loaded 120 rounds of 270 Winchester. This is the first time I've ever had to really process brass as 9mm and 380 basically require a tumble then into the Dillon. My elbow feels like jello after all that sizing.

I hate trimming brass, but when I start to shoot my 30/30 I suppose I'll have to. The 30-06 A.I. actually shortens the brass, and I'll probably wear the brass out before it needs trimming. Hmmmm.... maybe I'll have the local gunsmith rechamber the 30/30 to A.I. Lee dies are easily affordable.

Tonight I sized and lubed more Lee 9mm T/C boolits... And tried to call a few auto parts houses to find an 8 oz. can of Kroil. No luck so far....I wonder if Liquid Wrench would be comparable?

And tried to call a few auto parts houses to find an 8 oz. can of Kroil. No luck so far....I wonder if Liquid Wrench would be comparable?

Here is a chart from another place that shows the comparisons between solvents & their abilities to loosen by measuring what it takes to break loose the same tension( torqued) fastener. As you can see, the AT fluid+acetone mix( Like Ed's "Red" solvent) did the best.

Machinist's Workshop Magazine (March/April or May/June, 2007) actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

I hope that helps you out.

G'Luck!

Yesterday I cleaned off, re-arranged and somewhat organized the bench top so I could find what I have. While doing the clean-up I pulled a folded paper bag out from under a set of shelves. On top of that bag was one (half a pair) of Glock striker spring retainers, new condition. Nest, I had 3 of these halves (1.5 pair) in my parts kit, now I have 2 pair. This must be my mini-Christmas gift from me to me.

Today was a cleaning day for my store room. I reorganized my beer shelf (cellar) and all of the shelves of brass. Stacked the empty coffee cans and cleaned any sharpie writing off of the used ones. Threw out a bunch of boxes, sacks and wrapping material. This room also is home to some of my ammo, empty plastic shell boxes and maybe 2000# of lead in it. Not through yet, but made a good start.

Swore at most of my attempts to make 20 gauge round ball loads with a good crimp. But getting closer. Did some clean up around the bench when I needed a break from being frustrated or while waiting for suggestions on what I needed to do for better results.

Later I'm going to wet SS pin tumble some 20 mm brass and then a few 50 caliber. Just a few of each. Not sure what I'll do with the 20 mm cases but I'll think of something. Once they are all shiny they would make nice earrings except for the banging on the collar bone :-)

The red 12 gauge is store bought. The yellow 20's are all me.

I cast about 150 8mm out of a lee mold that i go this week. Also sized 50 new 8mm brass cases. Still need to prime and expand the neck of the cases though. Then put some powder and lead in them.

I bought a brand new Lyman 457121 to use in my Ruger Dangerous game model77 458 Win mag. I cast 20 boolits from linotype.
They came out beautiful and round as could be. The only problem was they measured at .455.
There is no way these are going to work.
Time to break out the aluminum tape.

I talked to an electrician about getting some new light fixtures and two or three receptacles installed...I need them desperately.
He needs some renovation and addition plans drawn for his house project ...and I need some electrical work done in mine .....
We going to help each other out....he can't draw building plans and I can't wire electrical stuff !
