I started with a cheapo toaster oven and was limited to the number of bullets I could bake without having some get darker before all of them pass the smash test. With a convection oven I could bake 8 pounds of bollits evenly at one time due to the fan circulating the hot air.

Those look good for a toaster oven. I would smash test the ones on the ends and center to make sure all are cured enough for shooting.

This makes perfect sense. I was under the impression that convection just made the PC smoother.

Thanks for the explanation!

How do you get them upright without smearing the PC?

I use nitrile gloves. I can handle them a fair bit before it starts to smear.

I did some casting today.
at least 700 (maybe 900?) from a NOE 358-128-SWC.
I had some "leftover" ingots from 4 different batches of alloy (total weight about 20lbs) that for the most part were either softer than COWW and some that were a bit harden than COWW. So I melted everything all together, so it was all the same, and then proceeded to cast up all that alloy.

These were run through the Star today, with some SL68B from my newest batch.

Wash day at the brass factory. Most of the week has been wash day.
Working out what recipe of dawn and lemishine, weight of pins, and run time yields an inside and out polish for the least run time.

So far 800 of 38 special, 160 of 45 colt, and tonight it will be at least 500 of the .223 brass getting their turn to wash up for science.

Then I'll add another pound of pins and repeat same weights/amounts and caliber of brass.
I want to know if spending money on more pins is worth it in terms of how short can my run be and get the job done. I have a lot of brass sorted by caliber and head stamp, be nice to know if adding pins allows me to do smaller sorted batches fast enough to be practical.

A great old war horse. The Pacific DL-155.
Been so busy with other projects its taken me two months to have the time to get this puppy up on the work counter and go over it to see what is what. Anyways, just got this puppy cleaned up. Had to replace a few roller pins, but so far nothing else. It is set up for 16 gauge, so sometime this afternoon I'll get up a recipe for some 1oz. loads an see how it loads'. Got this and a Ponsness Warren from a member, and was amazed that they use the same powder and shot bushing so I didn't have to go through an order bunches of new bushings. I've already got 40 powder bushing for the MEC's and BPI has a adapter under $10.00 that allows you to use your powder bushings in the Pacific an the PW.

Got a new 38/357 die from a member for the loading room. Had about a hundred empties of 38 spcl sitting in a box for the last 19 years that I just new I would get around to doing something with it at some point when I got around to getting some dies for it, well it happened today. Got out the SS pins, rounded up some 44 mag dirty brass to go with the 38's and got them all cleaned up. Dug out some books and decided on a light load for the 158 grain lead round nose from Hornady. These are for the Derringer, so not going to make them too feisty with that small a gun. Using CCI 500 primers, RP nickle brass, 3.8 gr of Unique and the Hornady lead round nose and that should be good for hitting the target at 12 feet. Here ya go: Ya, Ya I know. Gotta start using that other phone with the better camera in it huh.

Been working on a new casting bench. Still a work in progress. Have to finish the new PID's, install the squirrel cage exhaust fan, put in more shelves and make on section closable for heated mold storage. My question now is whether to direct wire my probes to the PID or install the plugs and sockets. I bought them and then read that every connection decreases (potentially) the accuracy of the temperature reading. Any comments on this. Thanks, Jay

My reloading room is an enclosed area off the garage. No central HVAC there, just the ambient temperature which will be very close to the outside temps. With this intro, today I did NOTHING 'cause it's too stinkin' COLD to be out there. The forecast for the next week or so doesn't look much better, but there's always hope. Dangit, last month we had several days that got into the 70's. Those were really nice and spoiled everyone for a while. Mother Nature can be fickle, and I hate a tease.

Never had this trouble with mine, but of course, mine is from 2008-10, IIRC, or so, and not recently.

Bummer to hear you are having difficulties.

I would have not bought it, if it did not meet the criteria of my initial inspection before I bought it.

I keep hearing about folks bringing home a firearm they purchase, but then seem to find issues with it. Seems to me a lot of these issues would have been found at the point of sales & before the purchase..

I guess I am just a bit more "picky" than some others. To each our own, but if it doesn't meet the standards when I am looking it over before I buy it, I don't buy it.

G'Luck! with getting things in order.

I don't buy firearms online. If I can't hold it in my hand, it stays where it is. An exception might be someone here who has "rep". Otherwise, I need to inspect anything that my life might some day depend upon.

Revamping my .223 loads and supplies after latest round if tests and some thinking. I wanted to simplify and willing to pay a little more in order to have fewer loads to test and keep supplied.

Decided I can cover all my needs with two loads: 77 gr BTHP with 23.0 Varget, and 62-64gr bonded SP with 26.2 gr Varget. I have a bunch if bullets 55-69 grain and several powders to use up in the next 2 years. But all new purchases for .223 will be LC cases, Varget, 62 gr Fusion bullets and Nosler 77gr BTHP. Even for family plinking.

I realized I am spending too much time exploring a multitude of components in this one caliber and not doing enough loading and shooting in others. Planning to work through simplification in all my cartridges and settle on a couple of standard loads and be done with it. I experimented for 30 years and now want to enjoy more shooting and less fiddling.

I share your philosophy- I prefer to find a "pet load" for each gun quickly so I can shoot more and get better with the gun, not stay at the bench.

... I prefer to find a "pet load" for each gun quickly so I can shoot more and get better with the gun, not stay at the bench.

Exactly my feelings. Let the YouTube guys like Johnny's Reloading Bench try 57 powder/primer/seating depth combinations for every bullet (in ARs no less) for months to gain .100" on a five shot group across a windless range.
I spent last night loading two ladder series with 70gr Sierra HPBTs using 4350 and H380 for .243. Might also run a third tonight with 760 under the same bullet. Not out of scientific interest but because those are powders I have a bunch of and are not currently being used up in any of my .308 or 30/06 loads. Find a good recipe for each and load 'em up. I plan on giving them as gifts to all my favorite coyotes in a couple of weeks.

I looked at my RCBS Rock Chuck which I purchased in 1978 and is my first and favorite press and thought about all the pleasure it has brought me. It has stuck with me through all the good times and bad. Through two marriages it has always been my friend. Then I thought about the current state of our country and how these snot nosed no nothing socialist infused useful idiots are destroying the Constitution and cried.Reloading and casting have been my solace for 40 years.Shooting is just a technique I use to unload brass so I may cast and reload. I'm afraid of losing it all. It's all I want or have,it's my passion, except God and my third wife of course.I bought her a Rock Chuck and I hope God reloads/casts.I guess I'll put together some 45-70's with LEE 457-405-F I cast yesterday on the Rock Chuck.

Today in the reloading room I made a blanking mess. Polish everyplace. That ruger mark 4 runs smooth as butter by hand tomorrow I will hit the range and give it a try. I can not tell you the trigger pull as my gauge is packed and I have no clue what box it is in. But it does feel to be around 3-3.5 pounds. Think it started at 7.

Keep your heads up guys we are not dead yet. Enjoy what we can while we still can.

Funny when going through stuff what one finds . all that stuff from years gone by . More 300 blackout to load , when powder comes in 458 socom that functions the ar , and of course time to load some more 45acp . But thats in one reloading room actually use another room for reloading also , and right now its pre heating new 45-70 molds for casting tomorrow.

Son and I went to the range and tried out my cat-sneeze rounds plus some factory bullets. Boy those hand-loads were fun! They made a lovely little 1.5" group of 5 shots. :)

When we got home, I took all the brass and loaded up 20 more of these cat-sneeze "Olivers" - thus named for our lazy orange cat Oliver. Probably be a few weeks before we can go out and fire these off.

For the curious, I have but the simplest of reloading systems; a Lee Loader for 30-30, a pound of Titegroup, CCI primers and 165 gr hard cast, poly-coated boolits from Falcon bullets. While I wouldn't mind casting my own, for the moment I'll probably just keep being a patron of several small cast boolit businesses. :)

Just set up my second Lee Classic Turret press as a case prep/sizing-decapping/bullet sizing single-stage press on steroids. I've decided I like having the sizing/decapping die for my rifles on the second press and then an NOE M-die-stye expander, powder thru die, seating die and crimp die on the other classic cast press. Seems to speed things up a little for me.

Next project is building a shelf over the bench so I can clean off some of the clutter on the bench itself

Changed my Dillon 550 over to 45acp from 380 while the pot and moulds were getting up to temp last night. Today I cleaned about 1200 pieces of brass and inspected the boolits I cast last night. Waiting for a banker to get off his backside so I'll probably get 100 test rounds loaded for tomorrow's range trip. Can't figure out why I don't have a section for 45acp (or 380acp) in my loading notebook. I only have one load for each but I feel better if I can look them up, lol.

I have to size rifle before trimming, and often will have primer crimp to deal with. Just makes sense to have a disk with sizer/de-capper die for the cases and use that station on the caliber specific turret for the NOE expander plug. Have been debating if I want to keep my C press as a second station or get a Lee Classic Cast O press or get another turret press and do what you are doing with having a "super station".

razorfish,

No intention of plugging it. My hand moulds that are double cavity I just line up the mold under the two holes at bottom of pot and pour both cavities at the same time. Nice and quick. When I go to use my one cavity moulds I change out the plate for the one hole plate. You have to decide what moulds you are going to do for part of the day cause if you start out with one plate and you later want to use the other one you have to let the lead harden in the pot so you can pull the plate change safely and not get burned. But I really like being able to get both cavities poured at the same time. I did have to drill out the sprue plate a little, the hole was too small for the kind of flow you get with this type of casting pot, the holes are fine if your doing it by ladle, although with this kind of grain weight I think you get much better fillouts with a hole that you can really pour in the lead quickly, any how that's what seemed to work best for me with this setup.

It was a nice day and enjoyed by all....me and a skinny little black cat that moved in and made me his servant.
He mainly chased insects and licked himself....he refused to learn how to operate the 450, just wasn't interested in it at all .

Put together 60 rounds of 30/30 Ackley Imp. with some freebie demilled M80 ball. Neck sized with a .308 win Lee collet neck sizer, seated with a Lee standard seating die and finished off the package with a pass through a Lee Factory Crimp die. The finished rounds are excellent in form and function. At the risk of being labeled a heretic, I have to say that those long sleek j-words sitting on top of that svelte Ackley case makes for a pretty sexy looking cartridge.

These are for exclusive use in a 24" T/C custom shop contender barrel. My next project is to use the exact same setup to load regular 30/30 win, with the same M80 ball and use them for fireforming.

Well, I finally got my two Swede rollers, one got sent to the some folks up in WI, instead of coming to me, and the other actually got here without going by way of the 12 state tour. Well all's well that ends well. So, time to get to work on the getting some ammo made up so this old war horse can get rolling again. Here was my afternoon.

Got out the Dremel tool and cut the 50 Alaskan down to just under 44mm, and see if they will chamber.

I spent my afternoon cutting down belted magnum brass for my .458x2 American. I used a new cutting jig from the same place that made my .300 acc blk jig.
It worked great. Cut about 300 shells down in a little over an hour and I am slow. Now I just need to size them, cut them down to spec on the trimmer, clean and polish and I'll be ready to do a bit of reloading. 405 grain cast and .325 jacketed ftx. Thank goodness the weather has finally warmed enough to allow me to spend time in the shed.

Yesterday I also started pulling down a small bucket full of mixed junk ammo to salvage the bullets for fire-forming and will try to finish off the rest of them today. I'm starting on my "Just in case" stash of 9mm. I have a jug nearly full of 45 ACP ammo that works quite well in my 2, 45 ACP pistols and is a known performer (mebbe 350 rounds) that's handy to grab if I need them "just in case". I'm starting on a bunch of 9mm ammo that will work in my 3, 9mm pistols that performs good and feeds reliably in my 3 pistols. I have about 150 so far, mixed brass, CCI sm pistol primers with a medium-high load of Universal. I have fired this load out of my Ruger LC9s into water jugs and got penetration through 3 jugs and entered the 4th. Clocked at 1075 from the short barreled Ruger and got 3" groups, rested in hand, at 10 yards. Recovered bullets showed good expansion to 3/4". I'm sure this load will work well in any 9mm pistol, and if I have to evacuate (nearly had to due to forest fires last summer) I can just grab my "9mm Bag" that has 2 pistols and about 200 rounds (so far). I was never a Boy Scout, but I believe in "Be Prepared"...

Not familiar with how the Lee spout is configured, when I have a spout freeze on my RCBS, I light a propane torch and hit the spout with just a second or two of heat. Usually frees it up. If it doesn't I just give another second or two at a time until it starts flowing again. I've never even got a scorch mark on the pot.

Boy ya gotta ask detailed questions. The die set was made in 1973, very clean. It is 44MAG ONLY. Size die, Expander die with decapping rod/pin built into the Expander. Seat/Crimp die for .44MAG CRIMP ONLY. Seater stem style no longer made.

After 5 minutes at the reloading bench I came inside and ordered a new RCBS Seat/Crimp die for .44spl/.44mag. Tried to save a few bucks. Now I have a useless die set & I'm out $28bucks

AND IT'S ALL MY OWN FAULT.

Well I can't sleep, so I guess I'll get out to the garage and size a bunch of N.O.E. TL432-243-RF, be ready to load when that NEW RCBS SEAT/CRIMP DIE gets here.

Naw I let the level get too low and plugged the spout up good with slang. Once I got the valve rod and it's operating rod removed I was able to drill out the slag out with my Dremel. Works good now. Started a long run of 90 gr .355 with a new lyman mold.

Finally finished trimming 6 gals of Mil 556. Both hands and wrist ache, and reg arthritis med do nothing. Next is chamfer and deburring the last half of them. Thank goodness it's a one time deal and will probably last the rest of my life. I'm using an RCBS X die that supposidly doesnt allow them to need trimming again for the life of the case.
Anyone else have experience with the X dies?

I wet tumbled 1000 .380 ACP brass and expanded 100 or so 9mm casings. All while painting our mobile home for a few hours and going to the supermarket. And I am 69. And sober. Life is good.

Working on putting together a round ball for 20 gauge with the help of Ajay (superblazingsabots) My 58 cal. round balls are a touch big at .575 so sorting through options and taking measurements.

Have a project next to the bench too. I am repairing a small bookshelf that was used when I was a kid to keep all the board and card games on. Brother, sister and myself would always argue about who had to take the game back to the basement and put it on this shelf. Still have it over 1/2 century later but the bottom framing was coming apart and the plywood was delaminating. So clamp and glue project then work at bench.

Finished with deprime and wet tumble of about 2000 .308 cases. Some going for sale and some going on that shelf after it gets repaired. Shelf will once again have "game pieces" stored on it. Along with a couple of "rule" books for shot shell or cast reloading :-) Lead would be too heavy but I think it can handle some brass and my Lee sizers.

Because defeating the difficulties of handling that tinny bullet makes us feel like kings. I have to use tweezers my fat fingers get in the way.
