Yes he is!

And I thought I was the only one lunatic enough to sort 38 Special by headstamp. Welcome to the asylum!

So I am casting Lee 358-158 RF's in anticipation of purchasing a S&W 327 TRR8 this Winter. I picked up 2,000 pieces of brass already. You guys that are sorting by head stamp, were you seeing much issues with group size prior to this or was this strictly a proactive measure?

Thanks,

"Proactive" for me, mostly. I sort everything by head stamp, age/amount of firings, etc.. I like to know what I am using, & what might be different should something change. Trying to maintain "consistency" when it matters. Stuff like that...

I keep track of that info most of the time so I can try to accurately keep track of things I use & do as I go along. Helps when trying to figure out issues if/when they happen.

I am a firm believer in having as much info as possible to go on, when I want to either repeat or improve what I am doing. Like keeping the same recipe for what I do when I make a soup, smoke a rack of ribs or a venison shoulder, etc.. and then I know what I may want to do to repeat that recipe or what I might do to change it...
:)

As they say, " YMMV". Do as ya like.
:)

Today in the reloading room...

Still working on my Alliant Red Dot testing for handguns....

Today, I loaded up 25 - 38 spec. cases ( G.F.L. head stamp) , once fired, "as cast" ( Ave. .3565" - .3575" after 4 months storage), 124gr 2R ( ave. weight 126.1), tumble lubed 45/45/10, with CCI #500(SPP),
5 cartridges each ranging from 3.0gr. - 3.4 gr., using Alliant Red Dot, (total 25 cartridges) for some sandbagged/bench rest/tripod accuracy testing @ 25 yds. with that load in colder weather(0F -25F deg.).

Yup, Great Job! Gotta teach the next generation to load and cast!

I didn't do much today. Got up early and hunted this morning. Came in about noon and cleaned off the bar in the kitchen for a party that we hosted tonight. I use the bar and counter space for sorting and washing brass and most of the stuff on the bar was mine! Now tomorrow, I'll hopefully finish tumbling the last of my 9mm brass and probably start washing and depriming 40 S&W brass.

J words are a good start.. less hassles with neck shavking. Once he gets that solid.. then he can start reloading boolits, if he likes that, he can start making his own.

Loaded exactly 73 200 gn SWC for my 1911. Ran out of lubes boolits and had to pull out the Lyman 45 and lube some naked ones with Felix. Last time I tried to load 45 I ran out of prepped brass and had to get out the cheapo Lee and deprime then run them through the tumbler. Been having too much fun shooting single stack. This time I also ran out of naked boolits, gonna have to set up to cast soon or I'll be having to sneak swmbo's 1911 in 9mm to the match.

Called around to see who would buy my scrap brass. One place wouldn't take shells, the others said they would. I went to a place that wasn't in a rough part of town. I had 20 lbs of brass that I've been collecting for the last ten years or so. I got a few bucks, not enough to get excited about, but now I can start over again.
They also have W/W and pure lead for sale. I still have a large amount of W/W that I have yet to transform into ingots, but at least I know where I can get some. The guys there were really friendly too, always a plus!

Well I didn't do it in the reloading room , but I finely cooked down the lead I have been collecting this summer , came up with 179 lb coww and 140 soft plumbers lead . Yesterday I reamed a 44 mag sizing die to size .451.5 It was the first time I tried something like that so it look a while.
I went out to my new heated casting room (in my pole barn) and cast 400 good 286407 and 200 good 7mm Hammer of Thore's. My wrists are paying for it this morning.
When did I get old? Kevin

My wrists kill me when doing any long casting sessions with dipper.....So I use my old Lee drip-o-matic and refill it with an old Lyman pot to keep production going. In 5 or 6 hrs. you can whip up 50# of 180 gr. .40 for my IDPA & USPSA shooting.....afish4570

I've been informed that the loading room is closed until after Christmas! :( I started about 1-1/2 weeks ago with the goal to get all of my pistol brass sorted, sized, tumbled and stored away and ready to load. I started with 9mm. This involved using some of the counter space and the kitchen sink. Due to the extra cooking going on, I got banned from the kitchen. Oh well!!! I did finish the last of the 9mm late last night. I'll start on something else next week, probably the 40's. I needed a break anyway!

Fired up the casting pot down in the barn, ran a couple classic 38/357 molds. These are old Ideal 2-cavity molds, and after running Lee 6-cavs and NOE 4-cavs, those doubles seem to take FOREVER to make a pile.

About 16 pounds of 358-156, a gas-checked SWC. 50/50 CWW/Pb.
These drop about 160 grains, so that's roughly 700 boolits.
For when I want a full power 357, which admittedly isn't as often as it used to be.

Also, 13 pounds of 358-477, a plain base SWC. Range lead + a touch of tin.
These drop about 150 grains, so approx 600 boolits.
These are for full power 38s, and midrange 357 loads.

I'd post pics, but I'm having serious problems with pic posting on this site.

Picked up a new collet for my Hornady bullet puller and pulled 3 years worth of mistakes and adjustments that weren't quite right. This thing is awesome but after that many my hand was a bit sore. I think I'll take some 3/4" aluminum rod and make a handle to slip over the factory one. I also noticed that the PC bullets tended to slip out of the collet a lot more than the Hi-Tek coated ones did.

Last replacement parts came in so I started case forming about 400ish cases for 45 ACP shot shells; Found that the Lee Hand Press will DO it, but, it takes Yeti Arms (which I have, fortunately) to manage forming the cases. I think it's time to get the B&D Woodworking Table rig set up for the RockChucker and use that, that's going to be a LOT less exercise to form those cases on that press... Planned on processing all 650#s but I ran out of propane. Weather didn't help as it was barely over 20 today. Ended up w/ three more rows than what's pictured.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4640/27601640879_fa9059a6a9_b.jpg

Pot is completely full and ready for when I get propane tomorrow. I won't have much time so 260#s is staying as cores.

The #5 ladle really sped up the process. But it's to large for the pot and really on the heavy side when full. A #4 would have been perfect. But being able to pour two ingots w/ one dip into the pot is sweet.

I've got a new caliber to feed. Loaded up a box of 9.3x74R stoked with 56 grains of IMR 4831 under a Hornady 286 gr. SP J-word bullet. I got a box of 50 of these bullets with the rifle. I plan to use them to do a barrel break-in of sorts and then I plan on cast exclusively in this Ruger No.1. I think I am going to really like this rifle. I plan to use it to make meat from the local whitetail population next season. That's a ways off but that is my current plan.

Plunk tested about 300 45acp 200gn swc. Found about 4 that would not fit and 3 with high primers. Seems some of the boolits are going in slightly crooked and bulging out one side of the case just enough to prevent proper feeding. Also did some weapons maintenance while watching the winter classic, man what a game.

Over the last few days I cast some soft lead 50 cal REAL slugs to finish up the PA flintlock season.
Put together 400 300 BO cast loads with the lee 155 grain PC'd. Over 15.0 grains of Lil Gun for plinking.
Another 300 300 BO 125 grain jacketed loads. And a few hundred 20 gauge light target loads for the kids and the bride. And me.
Now if we can just brave the temps to use them.

Pure lead eggs are spray painted back on the flat side; wheel weights are painted blue. I did find a couple of ww's that a torch would not melt. I don't know WHAT those are.

I got the chance to set up my new Lee auto drum powder measure. Holly cow where has this thing been! Instead of struggling with running h4895 through the double disk setup I had before and questioning not only if the charge was right but if there even was one, it worked beautifully. Got about 300 rounds of 223 loaded up for my ar.

Setup the other drum for 4.4 grains of bullseye for the 1911. Gonna run out of boolits at this rate and have to cast again. Found out that my Lee pot' s temperature swings pretty wildly and at it's lowest setting is still trying to push 900°, so I'm at an impasse on the casting front. I foresee a PID being added to my casting toolbox.

Spent much of Saturday with a very capable and experienced shooter exploring hand loading and casting. This is the second of our "classes" together and he is loving it. In a couple of weeks we will proceed to the range with some of the rounds we are creating and find out what works best. In the meantime I am enjoying his enthusiasm for paying attention and doing it right and allowing me to belabor the basics as a foundation for a safe and enjoyable future. He is really a fine young man and just a couple of years older than my adult kids ( that have no interest in hand loading) so I'm having fun too.

I've been wanting to make some myself any tips available? sorry bout going off topic.I found a powder load that worked with 2-3/4" with little recoil. This load had no signs of over pressure, so I backed the load down 1gr., cut the wad center out and loaded. Still very little recoil but now they will not extract from a pump gun. Going to drop the load another 3grs. And try again. So the tip I will give start really low and work up. The full size load was 1/2gr below min to start.

Why is this significant to me? cuz I have not cast any lead since the early 70's (long break thanks to the military and other situations) and I just started powder coating for the first time last week (using Smoke4320's powders).

Spent the entire day removing a stuck .308 (Chrome Plated) from sizing die. Started with digging snow out to and around the entrance to the "Reloading Shack", then a search for the elusive RCBS Stuck Case Remover. After not finding it; memory surfaced the last time I saw the Stuck Case remover it was in the RCBS Pocket Swaging plastic box, so close up the Shed and back to the house. Located the RCBS Stuck Case Remover, researched and found the directions for use (it's only been about 20 or so years since I had the last Stuck Case). After a bit I got the case out; cleaned the die and finished loading the 20 Paper Patched .308 bullets (Swaged .301 boolits using Corbin Die) with 42.5 grains WC760. Day spent & I closed the reloading session out with 20 Rounds to be tested in next few days I hope.
