Tinkering again. PC the base of PB boolits for the BO. Will BLL, size, then BLL again. BLL is excellent sizing lube. Compare with GC version to try preventing gas port from cutting the bases. Best I've gotten @ 100 with a harder alloy and uncoated bases is 1" circle - pretty sure the port is cutting the base.

Was going to mount a scope on the newest rifle. But I had to move three air conditioners out of the way. Then I pulled the potatoes from the garden. Needed a place to put the buckets so I went through boxes of reloading items I bought from a friend of the family a long time ago. Now I have room to work but the baby woke up and the 3yo is acting like a baby.

Was trimming/reaming cases with my Forster case trimmer and finally had enough of the skinny .216" handle on the collet closer and replaced it with a piece of 5/8" aluminum. Drilled a .228" hole though the 4.5" piece of aluminum then milled a 5/8" (couldn't find a 9/16" endmill) recess for the collet closer body. Deburred it, tapped out the skinny handle, slipped on the aluminum cover and then tapped back on the skinny handle to hold it on. Works great and much easier on your hands if you're trimming/reaming a bunch of cases.

Still plugging away at trimming .223 brass. I'll stop at 500 cases. That is enough to have on hand in case I get a yen to try a load different than the ones already loaded. Don't be to hard on yourself Grmps, it's much worse when you find a Brand new reloading item still in the package. But you already had a new one and a used spare that you bought cause it was a deal and you thought you needed it !

Today I separated some boxs of 10mm brass that I purchased long ago. I just recently loaded up a few to shoot at a friends house that never fired a 10mm before. The flame was impressive.
Next is prepping brass for future reloading.

Nothing! It's hunting season so I went in there to get some hunting ammo for a sight-in session. Found about half of my missing 45acp ammo. Hunting ammo performed very well. :-) I remembered why I don't enjoy long plinking sessions with my Marlin 45-70's and RD hunting ammo. These rifles and boolits seem to enjoy ammo loaded very close to the edge of where I no longer enjoy touching them off, lol. Seems I'm a glutton for punishment, decided I better sight in one of my 35 Whelen rifles for a bad weather gun.

Not in the room, but yesterday I did melt down 100 lbs of sheet and pipe into ingots outside the room. I made ingots out of around 75 pounds of ISO lead containers and 30 lbs. of print spacer strips. Oh and 1.5 lbs. of pewter. I decided not to melt the mug with a whistle as the handle, at least not melting it for now. Has initials and a 1968 date engraved in it but not too deep, I'm thinking about seeing if I can give it a "brushed" finish that erases the engraving.

Due to the paint on the ISO containers I had to do those with garage open at both ends and a fan going so I figured I better do that now rather than when it was freezing out.

Slow night. Loaded 25 more shot shells and then switched gears to spin up 50 Lyman 525 gn slugs loads. I really need to pick up a universal charge bar for my MEC Sizemaster. I don't currently have the correct bushing for 17gn Clays and so I'm using a Hornady Auto Charge to weigh out the powder. Certainly slows down production. Loaded up some new slug rounds for testing as one of the gas seals I have been using is no longer available. Realized I have 200 Lyman 525gn slugs loaded at this point and still itching to crank out some more. Hope to get some testing done this weekend.

Well I have ran myself out of shot shell components. I spun up another 50 and ran out of wads. I have been using CB WAA12F114 clones for shot and slug. I had recently bought some Original Winchesters off Kijiji that were Winchester WAA12's and WAA12F114's but the Win WAA12F114's are different dimensions than my CB clones. I did another 25 to test with before I get too carried away. I have some CB Clones of the 12S3 and 12S0's too but the load I have been running is working great so I'll probably just buy more of those. I have over 500 1-1/8 oz &-1/2 shot shells on hand and there is snow on the ground so I should be ok for awhile. More testing to do. Back to casting and I think I'll switch gears back to .223 for a bit.

I'm working on a pile of copper accent pieces for a kitchen table. I'm going to have a lot of surplus and I read a thread here along time ago about plating cast projectiles. I rigged up an old server power supply and got some copper sulfate to tinker with:

https://s8.postimg.org/6mhggrpkl/Cu_Plate.jpg

It works well enough on one that I'll retrofit my grill rotisserie and find a home for my scrap copper. I've come into a pile of dead-soft lead and was hoping a thin copper wash and some BLL would get me to ~1700fps without much effort. This was a good read on a similar project:

Wanted to load some more 30-30 but noticed I was running low on CB's. Cast about 600 311041's according to my calculation as I needed to add 15# of alloy to top up the pot when done. I then cast about 260 265gn CB's for my 444, another 10# of alloy used. Having a large casting pot and 6-cavity molds sure helps to produce a lot of CB's during a session.

Finished putting the 300BLK together and took it for a test drive. Light primer strikes and no bangs so took it back to the reloading room, took the bolt apart and cleaned then much lube. More lube on the springs and tried it again. Success! but still a couple of light strikes. With use I think it will break in.

I still have another lower and am thinking 6.5 Grendel just for kicks

Today I found my old Ideal bronze .257 mold #257418 and due to an injured knee and bad weather I decided to see if I was still able to cast smaller bullets. The mold worked great as long as I could keep the mold hot enough but with a small lee bottom pour half full I could just barely get the corner into the melt. I could pour 3 bullets and the bullets would start to wrinkle. I still had excellent results with the mold so I filled the mold and put it aside. I don't even have a .25 caliber rifle. I decided that two things were going to happen before I put my 6 cavity Hensley and Gibbs .45 cal to work. First I will need a larger melting pot and a little help with keeping the mold to proper temperature. I remembered that I bought a small travel iron when the USMC demanded that I had pressed uniforms. I'm surprised I even found it for that was 60 years ago and it still worked. I have a 4x8x3/8 inch aluminum plate with enough room to set the mold flat down on it or an insulated cooling stand to set it on when the mold is too hot. I don't need a thousand bullets at a sitting but the multi cavity molds get very heavy quickly. The Lee's aren't too bad but the SACO and Hensley and Gibbs are killers during a long session. There is no problem here in the summer heat but this will help during the cold Texas winter.

I loaded some deer ammo to replace the ones I've shot sighting in and grouping. Luckily just 12 rounds because when I was putting everything away- I noticed I had used large pistol primers in the 22-250 with 45 gr Barnes TSX. Yikes, thought I. I had to know; I fired 3 rounds into a 1-1/4" group with same poi. No leaks so far so I'll file this away in Things I Got Away With. I'll not do it again unless I have to!

I may post a thread on using the tool because the YouTube stuff I found just wasn't very complete. Shows person using it, not how one uses it.

Emptied the 5 gallon bucket boolit trap. Got about 5 pounds of my alloy back.

Normally I don't empty the trap that soon, but there was a split in the side, from an errant round. I had to replace the bucket.

I wonder who it was that shot so badly that the side of the trap got knocked out ? Couldn't have been me.Makes me wonder who else is shooting here at my place ?

Seems that George came by and dropped off some few things for a young man I'm mentoring. He picked up a few things on his way out too.
And, he rifled the liquor cabinet.

My story - George was shooting down there behind the barn when I wasn't around. He's a notoriously bad shot ( could be from raiding the liquor cabinet). He's the one that shot the side out of the boolit trap.

Yeah, that's what happened.

Finally got around to loading up some from my RCBS 429-240-SIL mold. This is a gas-checked silhouette projectile - flat point, rounded ogive, bore-rider nose band. Not quite a SWC, not quite a RNFP. Tried tom get some pics, but couldn't get any co-operation.
23.0, 23.5, 24.0 grains H110. Gonna try it in my 9.5" Ruger SRH.

Used the pin gauges the cylinder throats on my recently acquired S&W 14-3. Two throats would not accept a .358" pin, the rest would.
The two that had trouble, the pin would go up to the very end of the throat, just wouldn't go thru - maybe a burr. Got out a small oval diamond file, and just lightly stoked the very end, putting a tiny chamfer on the openings. Really, just took the burr off.
Worked like a champ ! now, to go shoot the thing.

Pic of my S&W 14s - top is the 14-3, bottom is a 14-6.

Use a short allen head screw for the threaded part to attach to the cutter shaft and weld a small nut driver tool to it. Use the small one that has the same size diameter as the allen head screw...here I had to grind a groove in it so the driver drill would snap it's chuck onto the hex shaft so I can push/pull the cutter shaft in and out of the brass without disconnecting the drill driver from the new driver adapter.
Heck, I think RCBS even sells these little adapters too.

This driver drill is small and lightweight so I didn't need to make a wood slide to align & carry the weight of the driver. I think Home Depot sells various brands in the 7.2 VDC version, they have plenty of power & torque as they are designed for drivers and not particularly as drill motors.

Helped my nephew with a problem he was having with his Hornady LnL where it was crushing the shoulder .300 WinMag brass he was trying to reload. He just had the bullet seating die too far down so that the portion that went over the neck of the cartridge was pushing down on the edge of the shoulder right by the neck. Interestingly, even damaged that bad, they were able to be restraightened by running them through the normal sizing die. Considering how bad that looked, I was expecting them needing to be fire formed to get back in shape (assuming they would even chamber considering what shape they were in).

It is 9mm Largo, which I already load for in some Destroyers. I almost passed it up because of the bore, but glad I did not as it is from the same year (1950) as my favorite Destroyer. A 9mm Luger barrel would be nice, but Largo brass is available and easy to load.

Got a few boxes of hornady Win 405 j words for loading in my 450/400 N. E. last year and never got around ordering the Lee push thru sizer in .410. The Win 405 is a .411 dia as Hornady makes it and since Ruger made the grove dia for this No.1 in .410 I figured it would be a good idea to at least get the J words in the same dia as the grove before I go around stuffing them in shells for trials. Lots of standard stuff at Hornady for this caliber, but it is nice to have something other than a 210 grain pistol j word to shoot out of this rifle. This 300 grain j word should be a good compromise I think, at least it is constructed for rifle parameters in the field.

The Lee sizer did a great job and just a few rolls on the lube pad with RCBS lube made them go through the sizer without one sticking at all. Of course I was only taking them down .001

My first day of PA rifle season, loaded only 10 rounds, .30-30 150 gr Sierra J word FPs over 34 gr BL-C for a 101 year old Marlin 1893. I walked out and fired 5 rounds offhand from the magazine without dismounting and hit the 6" steel target at 100 yards with all 5. Still hunted the rest of the day and put it on 4 does and a spike buck yelling "BANG!" at them, what fun. Most of the time I spent admiring the fine old rifle and imagining deer season, 1917....anyway here's my favorite lever gun:

This new sizer cured the problem I was having with my Lyman 45 sizer which was sizing a little off center(more on one side than the other).
After I had enough sized, I loaded them over 4.0 grains of Bullseye.
I am going to take them to the range soon and see how much difference it makes in the accuracy of my 1911.

Nice, had my 69 cal 1842 out last weekend.

What do you use for patch, powder and charge. What diameter ball ? I'm using thick cotton jersey and an old Lyman mold that drops at 67.5 or a hair larger. I'm using pyridex RS and 70 grains. We had a 40 & 80 yard target up. 40 was easy, 80 was 2/3's

quail4jake
12-01-2017, 12:30 AM
2/3 on the target at 80 yards is admirable with that punkin chunker! Compliments. I use the Lyman .662 mold and load paper cartridges with 4 drams FFg as per the Ordnance manual of 1851. this is pure military loading from the cartridge box, no lube no patch, I suspect you're doing much better patching. The advantage of paper cartridges is rate of fire, my record is 3 rounds in 51 seconds and I've been outdone by youth!

Soundguy
12-01-2017, 08:45 PM
Nice! 3 per minute is fantastic. I can get one off and be reloaded in the time you can pop 3!

Tonight is sort cases by headstamp, & tumble clean some brass. Maybe load some 45 ACP too.

Don't know yet, unfortunately. I've yet to fire any.

I can tell you this, though. CFE BLK is a very fine ball. It leaks from my Lee Perfect Powder Measure just like AA #9 does. Hodgdon's load data indicates 22.5-23.7 grains with the 110gr V-Max with even the starting load being compressed. They're not kidding. I loaded these up at 23.0 grains and I honestly don't think I could have fit much more than that in the cases. I had maybe 1/8" of space below the case mouth. These things were compressed enough that it was actually making me nervous.

Those little Z-Maxes do look pretty cool though.

Using Mothers Wash and wax with Carnauba wax, dash of citric and teaspoon of dawn. They do get clean. I had been using tumbler for rock tumbling that helt about 1 1/2 gas. Just got too heavy to be lugging outside to hose to wash out brass. Also too big to tumble 50 rounds. The RPM was calculated from design standards for ball mills which would hold brass and pins to 11:00 position before releasing. It would clean so well that you could see inside case with normal room lighting. Makes it real easy to see case head area.

Disassembled all the ML long guns I own, then cleaned, oiled and reassembled them.

primered (is that a verb?) 50 brass shotshells for cowboy shooting

I think the correct word is "primed" and it applies to both in singular and plural actions. English is a messed up language! :veryconfu

Replaced the pressure screw and piston Lyman 450. Continued lubing/sizing 95 gr .312 pills.

Experimented with making .22 gas checks from .011" Al flashing from Home Depot. I think it needs to be annealed. The Lee classic press being an O style makes it difficult to feed the free check 3. May switch to Hollywood Sr. press.
