Hi folks-

I've come across some powder from Frankford Arsenal (FA) 1934 and 1935 cases. This was done about 10 years ago by my father because of the corrosive primers. The powder passes the "smell test" and seems fine. It's extruded powder and seems similar to 4064. There were 47 grains of powder loaded in the cases.

Would anyone have a best guess as to the IMR equivalent to the powder? If it helps any with the identification, the bullets are 173 grain FMJ with a boat tail.

Thanks!

The old Ball M1 was loaded with an earlier IMR-1185 powder which does not compare exactly with anything made today. The velocity of Ball M1 cartridges or M72 Match can be approximated closely in USGI cases with the Sierra 175 Matchking and 47 grains of IMR4064 or Varget, or 48 grains of RL15. As for using the pulldown powder from old Ball M1 ammunition, I would use 4064 data as a starting point and if the original rounds contained 47 grains, that agrees with my experience using current 4064 in FA34 cases with similar M72/M118 175-grain FMJBT pulls from breaking down ammo to make "Mexican Match", when we commonly replaced the GI match bullet with 168 Sierras.

The old FA70 mix primers are milder than current manufacture, but are close enough to Remingtonb9-1/2 that you will not get into any trouble. I shoot up the corrosice primec ammo and just hot water clean the rifle and the empties.
