I picked up a NM Single Six in 32 H&R w/6.5" barrel a little while ago and I'm mapping out which powders and charges I want to start with to work up a load. The boolit I'll be using is the RCBS 32-098-SWC cast from WW's and loaded in Starline brass. One of the powders I want to test is H110. I noticed Brian Pearce listed a H110 load for the 32 H&R in the one of the 2011 issues of Handloader in an article about 327 and 32 H&R loads. In the article he used a regular SP primer for the 32 H&R but a SPM primer for the 327 load with H110. My understanding is that magnum primers are different from regular primers in that they are thicker to withstand higher pressures from magnum charges. If this is true than it would explain Brian's use of the magnum primer only in the 327 load due to the higher pressures than the 32 H&R. I've also heard many times that you should use a magnum primer with WW296/H110 because it's difficult to ignite, but I haven't seen any documentation or data to support this, or the fact that magnum primers are any hotter/burn longer than regular primers. As a result, I was going to use regular SP primers for the H110 load unless I come across information to the contrary. Has anyone had any problems using regular primers with H110? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks, Gene

The Federal 200 is the same primer used in factory. 32 H&R Magnum and. 327 Federal ammo.

For high end loads, I use CCI 550 small magnum primers in 32 HRM and CCI 400 small rifle primers in the 327 Federal.

Any "plinking" loads I just use standard small pistol primers.

I use Winchester small pistol primers with full loads of H-110 in the 32 H&R, with fine results and no complaints.

Thanks for the info Gents. I'll stick with the standard SP primers and see how she goes.

I am just starting to experiment with W296 and my 32/327. I tried 10 rounds with 10.5 grains of 296 and a 100 grain bullet. I used Winchester SP primers. Other than a little more unburned powder then I would like, it shot pretty well in my Single Seven. I am hoping to load some more and get them over a chrono in the next couple days.

Sources say to use a sr primer with 327 Federal @ 42000 psi.

I have used winchester primers with 296 and the 32 H&R.

ethang - How're ya likin' that Single Seven? I'm seriously considering getting one but I've held off because I got a 327 Freedom Arms on order at the moment. I know if I don't get one I'm gonna regret it later. I didn't get a 327 when they made it in a BH and now I really regret it. I've seen a few on GB but geeze, the prices are high of course when you find em. The only thing I'm not crazy about in the Single Seven is the cylinder length. If my waning memory serves me it's 1.45", and the boolit I like to shoot, the RCBS 32-098-SWC, is about 0.1" longer than the cylinder if you crimp in the groove. Of course if you crimp over the front band it'd be ok but I'm not crazy about doing that due to the reduced case capacity. I still might get one though.

I'm not ethang but I do own a Ruger Single Seven and really like it but the short cylinder is a problem for a lot of boolits. The Lee 90 SWC fits and shoots great and I recently bought a Accurate 31-115J for hotter loads and it was made for the Single Seven and works and shoots very well. The RCBS 100 grain wad cutter shoots very well too.

I am Ethang and I approve this message... .oh wait...

No seriously. Get one. There is things I would have rather Ruger/Lipseys did, a longer cylinder being one. In the end though, this is turning into one heck of a little pistol. Mine had a couple issues but a trip back to Ruger corrected them. I have a very limited amount of AE 100 grain 327 through it but it very accurate and fun to shoot. From what I hear Lipseys has already put another order in, they seem to be selling very well. Maybe this will be the shot in the arm the 327 needed.

just because I really like seeing it....

first rounds downrange. AE 100 grain soft points at 25 yards. I didn't need to touch the sights.

Have you asked the powder manufacturer? Since they list no loads I would contact them before taking advice from the internet. 327 Federal loads show SPM primers. H110 loads always have magnum primers due to ignition issues.

Magnum primers for magnum cartridges , Usually . What about .44 Rem mag in the late 70s early 80s? Winchester did NOT make magnum primers . Winchester said that their standard primer were up to the job . They still are . I use Magnum Large rifle in say my .300 Weatherby , I can see if I had .22-250 or some such that I might find small mag rifle beneficial . I use Win standard primers in all my hand gun cartridges , from .32 mag on up to .454 Casull , even if I shoot them in rifles . . 500 S&W maybe different using H110 or Win 296 or not . I'll just have to try , and see . I use CCI mil spec. in my .308 NATO , and in some of the loads for my M1s and the Brownings 1919s Those have floating firing pins . Tough metal cups do the job , but what did a fellow do before CCI they produced them ? I have seen lots of Western , Win -West , and Win in mil spec cartridges . I intend to load win small pistol in my .32 H&R , .327 Federal . The .357 .41 .44 .45 in all there various chamber ings ( mag , Supermag , ) get small , or large standard primers . Makes life simple for me . I have no need to get the last percent of power out of a gun , Winchester makes/sold 296 , and recommended use was their SP/LP primer . If I need more power I get a bigger gun . Oh, I like my new 4 5/8 ,5 1/2 ,7 1/2 single sevens , looking forward to playing with them and the other Ruger .327s I have , out at the range , when the weather permits .
