I swapped for a 45/70 tonight that has a chipped bolt face.
Can I buy parts and get it repaired, or did I get a nice parts gun?

Look on ebay is a good start. And, dont forget to sell the old one, those folks will buy anything.

You sayin your cross bolt safety is broke?

Get a Clyde's CBS removal kit, and fit it right

Or better yet replace it with a saddle ring safety delete kit, you end up with a neat saddle ring instead of that obnoxious lawyer button!

Brownells did carry a good supply of Marlin parts. Not sure if they have it in stock.

For clarification I think I read on another post it is a chipped "bolt face"? Not a chipped safety? If I am correct I'm not sure Marlin would sell one without factory fitting but maybe they will. If it helps I think I have a spare bolt for a 336 30-30 which should be the same only needing the face opened to the 45-70 dimension. I would be willing to sell it reasonably if it helps.

.

Unless half the bolt face was chipped away, I'd just use it as is.

I'm with pietro. The thing will probably work just fine as is.

Which version of the 95 do you have? the first one has a square bolt like a 93 and 94. Finding a bolt for that would be very very difficult and at least one other person is looking hard (not me).

Me 3,,,, if it really bothers you then maybe taking it to a welding shop and they can fill the chip with a heliarc and weld rod. Should be a 5 minute job.

A picture would really help? Then we can impart all of our collective wisdom onto you and solve this problem once and for all, and in the best possible way.

It is not safe to fire like it is at all. The bolt is round, and I believe it was made in 79.

OK I just got to looking at it and I am an idiot, there is no chip and I could not see anything obviously wrong with it, it feels solid. I bought this last night (in the dark) and shined a light on the closed bolt. I could see light looking down the bore. I never realized that you could actually see light through them. I just checked my others and if you get the beam just right, you can see light. Soooo I feel stoooopid, but at least a little smarter now.

Hey look at the bright side, it's going to be a heck of a lot easier to fix this now!

It is easier to fix a bit of ignorance than a bolt face, all it takes is a bit of knowledge.;)
But you needn't feel like the lone ranger. I was all set to pull my 1895 Cowboy apart to find out what was keeping it from firing--the safety was on. Duh!

Admitting that you are an idiot is the first step in the cure. Most idiots I have know would deny it to the grave.

The fact that you have recognized it early means there is hope.

Word of caution,,, You never really get over it.

I know this for a fact and am reminded of it daily.

But you can minimize it's effects by judicious use of your brain.

Your two most effective tools are your brain and your mouth. Figuring out which one to use at what time, is the key to success.

I usually have no idea?
