View Full Version : Cleanest burning/lowest residue lube?

I'm trying to work up a 200 grain cast load in 10mm that at least approaches 1200fps. With new Starline brass and AA#9 powder I'm getting perilously close to running out of room in the case for the bullet and still fit them in the magazine/chamber. AA#9 is the only powder in my load books that gets to 1200 fps before maxing out, and it is very dense, so I really can't think of another choice offhand. I'm having this problem with two different bullets: the RCBS 200 and one I designed using the Mountain Molds website.

My last try was 13.0 grains (load book max is 13.5) and COL at the listed max of 1.260. I don't think there's much room left in the case, if any, at this length. With a taper crimp they will reliably feed from the magazine and they all pass the 'plunk' test. The problem comes with shooting them: after about the 4th or 5th round the slide won't go into battery. This is very reliable and I can pull the jammed round out of the chamber, wipe off the lube and powder residue and rechamber it with no problem. This isn't limited to just one gun because both my 1006 and my Glock 20 have the same problem.

I have tried deeper seating (and am running out of room as discussed earlier) and applying more crimp to make a little extra room near the case mouth. I'm thinking maybe I need to work on the residue problem rather than the physical space problem. I've tried Felix lube and a couple of other home brews, and I have a few others left to try, it I would love some recommendations for lubes (either commercial or homemade) that leave minimal residue. Thoughts?

I wonder about two things, first, my limited experience with AA#9 has shown me it is not very efficient without a tight fitting bullet, a healthy roll crimp, and maximum charges. I haven't loaded 10mm for many years and never considered using that powder.

Second one,of the side benefits of usng Ben's red is the lack of residue in the chambers of my .357 and .44 Magnum revolvers. I shoot mostly special ammunition in my revolvers and discovered that BR does not form the fouling ring at the case mouth in a chamber that every other lube I've tried does. I've shot 500-700 rounds of .38 Special and .38 Special+P cast bullets and was able to chamber .357 cartridges without resistance and no stickiness upon extraction. Any fouling in the chamber wipes out with a dry patch. The benefit of Ben's Red that I value most is the fact it does not lead or foul keeping chambers and bores in a uniform condition.

Take a look at PC (powder coating). No grease. No residue. Clean barrels. No leading. Many of us (probably thousands?) on here are using it very successfully. I moved from grease to PC about 19 months ago and have had excellent results.

Check the stickies. It solved all my gunk fouling problems.

Just another alternative to play wth!

I've had that happen in a few, worst was the .40 using blue dot and Felix lube.

What you need is a softer lube that goes liquid under pressure alone. Try the old NRA formula or just beeswax/Vaseline. Make a small batch, hand lube a few, and see if that doesn't help.

Getting ready to run my own hardcast in the 10mm. I am not sure why you are worried about slight compression of AA#9, it's quite slow. As to residue, as noted, all lubes don't act well with all powders. I will be trying AA#9, BD, LS & 800X, all with Randy's Tac-X. looking for 1150fp+ w/ good accuracy & as clean as possible for lead. Should be easy enough to do.

I've had excellent results with Mike's 6-6-6-1. The cleanest lube I have tried.

Not worried ballistically, but at full compression I'm barely able to make max OAL.

Take a look at PC (powder coating). No grease. No residue. Clean barrels. No leading. Only for smokeless powder reloaders. Shooting black powder reloads is always going to leave a residue & dirty bore. Due to BP being hygroscopic!

I use AA#7 in my 10. Might take a look. I'm at 1100 plus.

Ran some loads with my new 195gr wnp over the chrono yesterday. It was cold, around 35. With 13gr of aa#9, avg around 1135fps with good accuracy. BlueDot also did well @ 9gr, pushing 1200fps on my stock g20sf. All seated at 1.260".

Watch the BD at cold temps. It gets a little spikey and doesn't tolerate extreme cold very well.

I avoid Blue Dot in 10mm altogether these days for that very reason. Too spikey near the top.
