Ok, after doing this for a year I finally found a big cast iron ladle (holds about six pounds of lead, maybe a hair more). I just finished two smelting sessions and this made it so much nicer pouring ingots as my "big" ingots are 4.2lbs, and my smaller one's are 2lb and 1lb ingots. (I had been using a stainless ladle I got from Walmart that would barely hold 2lbs)

Anyway, after using this crusty old ladle and being so much more productive it occurred to me that my crappy slotted spoon is probably holding me back on my clip skimming. What do you use? Where did you get it? How does it work? Would you change something about it?

Regards,
Dave

get one of the deep fat fryer things, like they pull funnel cakes and onion rings out of the hot oil with.

takes no time to skim clips, rocks, copper jackets, small pets, etc....

as good a shot as i have:

+1 for slotted spoon from a box of old kitchen utensils picked up for $1 at a garage sale. Wife got 3 paring knives she liked and I got several spoons for my casting bench. DALE

I use a 2 inch by 1 inch magnet attached to a 6 inch long handle. Fast and easy.

Thanks guys! I'll have to look at the local farm supply store. The slotted spoon I'm using tends to get soem of the smaller clips stuck in the slots and I have to pull them out . ..not a huge deal but I have to think one like the one in the picture at the top would make my life easier! :)

The deep fryer thing is a good idea.

I have an iron ladle with a divider in it; the large side the clips go in; the pure lead is strained our through holes in the divider. Works fine but it is a bit small- doesn't hold many clips.

I might use a welding torch to cut a few small holes in a ladle and try that. Or just buy a deep fryer skimmer. Seems the metal kitty litter scrapers would work too- try a pet store.

Untill I clicked on "The Antimony Man's" site I never even thought about using my ice dipper for cleaning out fishing holes. That is basically what that is.

Say goodby to my slotted spoon!!!!

I have one like Cohutt's that I got at Sportsman's Warehouse and it works like a champ. Well made and strong, gets a lot of clips out in a hurry. Cost me around $8. Wouldn't smelt WW's without it.

I don't know if this will show up very good but mine is just a thick round piece of flat metal with a bunch of holes drilled in it and welded to a long handle. It is leaning against the turkey fryer burner in the picture. The ladel holds a little over 9 lbs of WW,s....Wes

big ol laddle....with holes drilled by me......these cost under 5 bucks at restarunt supply houses.
stainless steel....or maybe nickle/chrome plated.

i just added a bunch of holes on the bottom of one that hold about 7-8 lbs of pb. i use a smaller no holes version to pour with,,,maybe 4 lbs or so.

Northern Tool sells several sizes of a self releasing magnet. Great for picking up spilled nails an such.
Just keep the PVC part cool.
Mama didn't know they're for lead work, I sent her after them. Tee Hee

I cut the bottom out of an old fire extinguiser drilled 3/16 holes in it and welded it to an old screw driver.

Old soup spoon I liberated from the kitchen. Used it forever without holes and then finally drilled the sucker a few weeks ago. Much better!
