Hit this 5 pointer sat at 2:00pm walked into a soy field 70yards away would not quarter put one between his neck and shoulder .Went down in his tracks , Something is going on with my load or scope though at night fall saw a big doe at 150yards turned the scope up to 7 held 8 inches high on her back pulled trigger clean miss! Don't know if being out in cold is affecting my load or my scope is going hay wire when I turn it up? I practice out to 200yards with this load in good weather and have good results. 350gr RD with 39gr 4227 ?

nice deer congrats
I can't see the rifle but I will take a guess that it's a Marlin 45-70
I could never get mine to shoot very good at all with cast and have switched to jacketed
however my Ruger #1 is another matter entirely,it loves cast.

The powder is real bad and will get worse as the gun warms.
Tried it in my Remlin 30-30 and went to 3031 or 4895 after funny results. Varget will also work.
I don't like 4198 either, recoil is harsh and 3031 puts it to shame for accuracy. 3031 in an original trapdoor shot a ragged hole at 50 yards with no face pain from the funny stock. 4198 beat my face.
Cast does not need shotgun powders. 4227 is the worst powder ever in a .44 mag. I sure wish I could turn some of you away from it.
Now my BFR in 45-70 will not burn all 3031 so the only powder that works is SR 4759, that will work in the Marlin too.

I also found that 3031 has less percieved recoil than 4198 and is more accurate. I am shooting 49 gr. of 3031 under an RCBS 45-300 fngc. This is in a Marlin guide gun.

I have a NEF 45/70 that absolutely loves cast. I use XMP 5744 with excellent results in all weather. It's not at all position sensitive either. With 405 gr LFN I use 30 grains for 1425 FPS. What kind of velocities are you looking for?

Unique will also give very good results in the 45/70 as well. Lots of data out there for those loads as well.

BTW, nice job on the buck!

My 45/70 is a 458 American - a 458 Win mag shortened to two inches. I have noticed same problems and will use the powders
suggested to see if they go away.
