If you run up against some CRUEL twist of fate and you had to go back to just one rifle for the rest of your days, what would you keep. Mine would be an easy decision, but really has nothing to do with it's versatality.

It would be a 300 savage, not the best for anything, but would work for anything it had to, it is just the one rifle I will never be without.

I saw this post early this morning and skipped over it but thought about it off and on through the day. The short answer is my AR in 5.56/.223. The irony is this is the rifle I listed in another post which asked which gun I bought and then realized wasn't what I wanted. All my guns are strictly for recreation or just because I like them. In the scenario listed above things have gone very bad and this is the one I would now keep.

A bolt action on the .308 case in any caliber from .243 to .358.

The nice part about being an American is we don't have to make that choice...

I have a swap barrel bolt rifle on a winchester post 64 long action
I have a bolt that takes any '06 sized cartridges
currently have barrels in 22-250, 243, 308, 30'06...
Next planning to going to go bigger caliber like 338 federal, 358 wcf, 35 whelen
or maybe 375 or 450 bushmaster.

If I ever find a 223 bolt and magnum bolt I will be able to be even more versatile.

That logically would be my choice - but it would be tough to give up some of the other rifles.

Not way to know today, depends on what is going on at the time. If I had to decide today I guess I would keep my M77 Ruger in 30-06 but if there was fighting to be done I might pick something else.

I beleive I would keep my .270. It is versitile just like the 06 but I have the .270 and not an 06. Either would work great for the lower 48.

30-06

+1 for a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle with Lyman 48 receiver sight, OR a Model 53 similarly equipped, favoring the Model 54 or pre WW2 Model 70 for the stripper clip slot in the receiver.

yes it is tough. I can narrow it down to two-45-70 or 30-06. I am having a hard time choosing between the two. I think the 30-06 would be my choice now but it might change tomorrow.

Winchester 94 ae 44mag,
Large capacity
Easy to reload the tube
100% reliable
Light Weight and maneuverable
reach out to any distance here in N.C.
And enough power to stop anything that gets in front of it.

No brainer, .30/06

Like Mr. Whelen said, "the 30/06 is never a mistake"

1895 Marlin lever in 45/70

Like the odd six, I can load it up to massive destruction, or load it down PP 180gr 45ACP cast for small stuff

So many to choose from but if I had to pick just one Ruger Scout in 308 which I don't yet own but am saving my pennies

My pick of the 300 savage is for no practicle reason, it is just the one gun that I won't ever for any reason get rid of. If it wasn't for that it would be a tough decision, but it would have to be a lever, so 45/70 would sure be in the top picks for me.

Yeah, I could go with a 300 savage, if only because of the 1920 savage bolt action rifle I've had for ages that's light, fast and totally neat. Also have a pre-war, stripper clip guided, lyman 48 sighted Winchester model 70 in 30/06 that would also be great for an only gun. Jay

Marlin 1894c 357 magnum. Large enough to kill all manner of North american game, small enough to take small game with light loads. 357 Magnum loads and casts efficiently. The rifle is reliable and handy to pack. Uses a wide range of powder, including black powder. SPP SRP LPP(provided you can find or make casings). Shotshells can be made. Rifle has available spare parts that might get broken or lost. It can be scoped, but doesnt have to be. Leverguns are quick to point, quick on repeat firing. You can top off the magazine with a round in the chamber.

Many of the same things could be said of a marlin 1894 in other calibers, but the 38/357 lends itself to many reloads on a pound of powder, where as a 44 doesnt. And being 2 of the most popular rounds made, the chances of scavenging some ammo in a disaster is much greater.

where as a 44 doesnt.

4grs titegroup = 1750 rounds per pound

Don't think I own it yet, but I can say that it would likely be in 308, 30-06 or 45-70.

I am "Very" partial to my SKS, it does almost everything I want a rifle to do, and it does it well.

But it doesn't do one thing very well, or rather to say "I" don't. That is shoot well at long range with iron sights.

So rather than bubba up my SKS I went looking for a Handi rifle with a 7.62x39 barrel.

I have not got it back from the factory yet. The scope is waiting to be mounted.
I can not say it is my favorite till I have shot it.

Call it a favorite in waiting.

And with a .223 barrel, 7.62x39 barrel, .357 mag barrel, and .44 mag barrel. It should be ready to do whatever I need doing.
