Auction site has a vintage Lyman Ohaus M5 powder scale starting at $40. It looks very similar to my Dad's old (and sadly long gone) Ohaus 505. Though it only goes to 505 grains I believe, it would be used to check weights of cast bullets, none of which would be over that. Is this a pretty nice scale? I don't remember much about Daddy's Ohaus 505 and can't remember its good and/or bad points. As always, thank you. Don

I Googled images for the M5 and conclude that, it so perfectly resembles my RCBS 10-10, that they must have been manufactured by the same company. Should that be the case, bid away.

I like mine. It is the one that sits on the shelf over the bench ready to go.

The Lyman M5 is, IMO, just about the best reloading scale you will find. They were made by Ohaus and were the forerunner of the 10/10 scale. These scales are more sensitive than the 10/10 but don't have the rotary barrel poise as seen on the 5-10 and the 10/10. I have two or three M5's in my pile of scales.

These were made at a time when scales were made by engineers not accountants.

Other scales I rate highly are the RCBS 5-10, RCBS 304, Pacific "M" and older Redding No 2's.

Here's an M5 in use

If you are used to the RCBS scales be aware that the scale markings are different. RCBS is in ten, Lyman is in five. This caused initial confusion for me when I first got mine after using the RCBS for years.
