View Full Version : SoupCan in the 7 X 57 mm
I've been having a ball shooting the Lee SoupCan 7 mm, 132 gr. G/C bullet in my two 7 X 57 mm rifles.
During the past few days I've shot some pretty good groups with my stainless Ruger, Mark II, 7 X 57 mm, 20" barrel rifle using this particular bullet.
I decided to take my 6 cav. set of blocks and run about 400 of the bullets this afternoon.
A great shooting 7 mm bullet.
Ben
Here is my Ruger , 7 X 57 mm with an older model Leupold, 3 X 9 X 50 mm Vari - X II. Some fine optics ! !

I've been wondering why they are called " soup cans"?
I have no idea where that name came from ?
The Lee .30 cal. Soup Can really looks nothing like this 7 mm bullet ? ?
In my opinion, this bullet is more closely " akin " to a Guy Loverin design bullet than the Lee 30 cal. Soup Can bullet.
This 7 mm design keeps about 75 - 80% of the length of bullet in contact with the bore of the barrel and offers a very short unsupported nose area. Most of the Loverin bullets that I've ever seen offered these design traits.
It is a real shooter in my rifles.

Mighty fine shooting! I swear by that same scope on my whelen.
As to these cheap scopes, buy a new Leupold and hurt just once.

I always thought they call it 'soup can' because they look like a soup can without the can label. :)
I need to try that load in my 7mm-08. I have the same load in my 7-30W but is not as tight as the groups you show.

Hi Ben,
Do you know if there an equivalent boolit in 8mm?
Thanks,
Jim
I've never seen one ?

Iwish they shot as well at 100 yards as they do at 50. I had similar results here, then at 100 yards it opens up like crazy.

Dang. I thought my Husky 7mm Mag shot them well until I saw that.
Back to the reloading/testing bench for me it seems.

They shoot very good in a 14'' tcu also. Makes me want to dig out my tang safety 77, just to see how it does. Nice shooting Ben.
I'll get these out to 100 yards soon and we'll see what they do there ?

These have shot well in everything I have tried them in; XP-100 in 7 BR, Old Rem RB in 7 x 57, 7-08, 7 TCU.
I had a ball shooting these in my RB at bison chips a few winters ago.

Jim,
I own this 8 mm NOE Mold, as far as I know, this is the closest thing out there right now to the 7 mm Soup can style of bullet :

Hummm! yes I thought that one was pretty close to the 7mm you showed. & NOE is having a sale.....now to justify buying another 8 mm mould:bigsmyl2:
It is just $ $.

I've used this "soup can" in the 7 TC/U, 7 BR, 7-30, 7-08 and 280 with good to excellent results. I've cast it from straight wheel weight alloy to linotype and 3 to 1 ww/lead mix. 1700 to 2500 fps in different gun and alloys. In MY opinion it is a great bullet. Groundhogs, fox and deer have been taken with it.

It doesn't look like the 31141, but it is similar in behavior in that it is a great " general all purpose 7 mm utility cast bullet " , like the 31141 is in the many .30 cal. cartridges.
