I was wondering if there is any way to repair a broken wire in the heating element of the 4500? I broke mine this morning and was wondering if there is a repair. One of the wires broke right at the metal and I can't see any way to repair it. I thought if anyone knew they would be here and thought I'd ask before I purchased a new one.

Luckydawg: Is that a heating "cartridge"? If so, where can I buy one?

Thanks,

I bought a Fast Heat Cartridge Heater 3/8" dia X 1-1/2" long 30W 120V 12" leads off of ebay. The outfit was Casey Electric in Tallahassee, Fl and they had a bunch for sale. Shipped to my door was just under $17. It took a whole 4 days to get here too.

How do you control temperature with the cartridge?

I'm using a PID with relay output.

The only way to control temperature with a 4500 cartridge heater is with the off switch. Usually once my carnuba red starts to get a little sticky I just switch off and I'm good for about an hour before switching on again. I am building another pid at the moment that will be used for temp control on my lubesizers.

^^^ wait, what???? Looks like I'll put the extra pid on hold and get a dimmer switch then. Bugger!

A router speed control also works. http://www.harborfreight.com/router-speed-control-43060.html for those who don't want to wire up a dimmer switch themselves.

My PID with thermocouple set me back $14 shipped to my door (actually po box). Looked just like the one I bought from Aubriens 3 years ago.

Still looks good to me. I ordered one along with a 300watt cartridge heater

You just need to change the 220voltage to 110 for the states.

i use a dimmer switch

Wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a cartridge heater with the appropriate output? IE rather than getting a 30W heater and running it at 20% of output, just buy a 6W heater.

my heater heats up in aluminum block that sits under my sizer. so i run it on high until my lube flows good then i turn it down
like a boiling pot of water on your stove you don't turn it on low to start with. i turn it on hi first then turn it down to low

This assumes you know exactly what the correct output is, and that you only use lubes with the exact same heating requirement. The dimmer allows you to vary the heat output as needed. It's good to have choices.

Having a dimmer allows you to use just about any heater you can get your hands on cheaply. If it weren't for my dimmer (which I had already made for another project) I wouldn't have been to rig up this heater for my 45. The 50 watt cartridge is WAY too powerful but the dimmer lets me dial it down.
