Hi guys, just a quick question. When I seat my bullets for my 45-70 (Accurate 46-415V) the seating die leaves a ring on the top. It deforms the lead just a bit, and it scars through the powder coat. I pulled the seater plug, and it looks like I should be able just to grind it flat and be done with the problem. Is this ok to do? Has anybody done it before? Thanks!

I had a similar problem with a Redding 30-06 seating die. I filled the cavity with JB weld resulting in a flat seating stem which works well with flat point bullets. I did have a friend with a lathe later shorten the stem about .250" so I would have about the same seating adjustment I had before filling with JB weld. The biggest consideration is keeping the seating surface square to the centerline of the seating stem.

Another way to go is with hot melt glue; fills and is somewhat pliable and is easily removed should it not provide the result you're looking for.

My bullets are flat nose so I filled the seating plug with JB Weld. It worked well for me.

I took a chamfering tool and knocked off the sharp inner edge, then chucked it in a drill and polished/rounded it with some fine emery and wet and dry at the end. Once it was smooth it didn't cut into the bullet nose.

So those of you that used J B weld, did you sand everything flush after you filled it? This is looking like the easiest method to use since my bullets have a .37 meplat.

After it has set up a bit, but before it is really hard, you should be able to trim the excess off with a razor blade. Make sure you rough up the inside a bit so it sticks good.

I just made sure it was flat by packing the JBWeld against some paper. I didn't need to sand it.

To those who decide that they want a flat nose punch I have a couple of concerns. The punch needs to have cup-like cavity that fits the nose of the boolit perfectly. This will keep the boolit straight while starting when the boolit has no support in the brass neck. Also it will keep the boolit straight during the seating process to counteract any uneven forces in the neck causing concentricity issues. I'm in the group that likes JB Weld or hot glue to make the punch fit the nose correctly.

So how do you make the punch fit the nose? Would you make an impression in the weld while it is still pliable?

Take a round with the bullet seated square and put some oil or wax on the bullet. Then fill the seater with JB and run the round up into the die and let it harden.

If your die is made by RCBS give them a call. They will make you a seating punch that fits.

This is the best over-all solution because you can change it for every new mold you buy.
