Getting ready to load 350gr NOE for my 45-70 Marlin. Planning moderate load. Wondering about filler above powder, not sure about powder yet. Pet loads? Ihave a lot of 4227.

I loaded about 30 with 31gr 4759 and the Gould hollowpoint (330gr) on Monday without any. In fact, I don't even use a filler when I load the collar button, but do point the barrel up before firing!

I have used a 350 with 2400 and no filler. Never used 4227 so I can't speak to that powder.

Is filler needed? No

Does Filler tend to help/improve the load consistancy? Likely

"Every rifle" I have shot cast in has improved with a Dacron filler.

YMMV

I plan to use a little filler to help consistency. Thx for the replies!

Good morning
I have used the fluffy fillers and with some loads it does help.
Cream of wheat (COW) has been a real friend with big fat cases like 45-70 and 50-70 when dealing with fat throated older rifles. But it has been beneficial with newer barrels also. I use the proper volume dipper (a little trial and error) with the COW in a nearby coffee cup. Smells like toasted oats at the range.

If your Marlin is "micro-groove" it will probably shoot better using either Cream of Wheat (COW) or Plastic Shot Buffer (PSB) as a filler. Both require careful measurement as the previous poster mentioned. These granular fillers compress behind the boolit and prevent accuracy reducing gas blow-by. They also raise pressures so start with a low charge and work up your load in small stages. IMR4227 will work fine but has a reputation for rapid pressure rise past a certain point. I would start with 23 to 25 grains and work up slowly until I got the power/accuracy I wanted, all the time watching for sticky extraction. Read the "sticky" on the use of fillers before making up any loads like this.

Thanks again. I'll look up the sticky!

Loaded a few rounds last nite with 1.0-1.3 grains of Dacron-Cotton pillow fill. I'll try shoot them tomorrow and report back. 25.0 gr of 4227 with a NOE 350 gr bullet.

Shot my loads. 25 gr 4227 w/ 1-1.3 gr Dacron, 350 gr NOE bullet. Not much recoil. Got a 2" group at 50 yds with old eyes and iron sights. I'll play with the load a little up and down, but I'm happy to have a load with minimal recoil. Thx for all your input!

I have a Marlin levergun and a Ruger No. 3 in 45-70 and has never used a filler. I shoot either 4759 or 2400 and am very happy with the results.
