Got my buck, was running out of time so I had to tag the 1st legal deer I saw. I have only 2 days to get an elk now, so meat is meat.
Was shocked in two ways this morning. First the damage that a boolit at 2050 fps can do, and that this little buck sat up again and tried to stand up!
Shot was about 60 yds, but still a lot of jelly in the "armpit". I put it behind his right leg and out in front of the other shoulder.122561122562122563122564Nasty!

Thanks for the post i am using a Lee 309170 (cast at 178 grs.) in the 30-30 to deer hunt this year my velocity is 2040 f/s so that is probably what i should expect.
In the past i have shot 2 deer with a .351 Winchester Self Load using a Jacketed Sierra 170 JHC SIZED to .351 and loaded to about 1700 f/s . Both deer were taken in the shoulder at just over 40 yards and in both cases that bullet blew the shoulder away from ribs breaking ribs then punched though the other side .

I'm closer to 190 grains, but your load will be almost identical. Next year I might go slower!
Good luck with your deer!

Congratulations on your deer!
Gotta love the 308. It's my 2nd favorite round, 30-30 is my first. I'm casting the Lee 200gr for 308 and the 170 for 30-30 using IMR 3031 for both. I Dropped a cow moose with my 200gr 308 at 80'ish yards last month.
Damage was minimal and passed straight thru like an fmj.
Enjoy your venison :)

Doesn't look like your boolit ruined much meat, the exit hole on the shoulder looks good, I don't know that I would change anything. It has been my experience that blood tends to collect between the two layers of muscle behind the shoulder on that shot, I hit it with water from a garden hose and most of it washes off. Congratulations on a nice deer

Congrats on deer #3 with cast! Are you going to use cast for your elk hunting?

Planning on using a 1907 this season if I get a nice day or two, especially if opening day gets me a decent deer and takes the pressure off a bit. Using a cast bullet from an old Ideal mold designed for the 35 WSL. I think the load and rifle will do it if I do my part no problem.

Nice deer! I've used a .30-30, .308 and .300 Savage with similar loadings, cast bullets work fine of you shoot straight, which you obviously do.

Taco, I was planning on using cast for my elk too but I spent all my time on the 9.3x62 mauser and still have'nt got the accuracy in a cast boolit. I have an iron sighted .45-70 that I have hardly shot, so I panicked and bought some 286 gr Prvi Partisan J bullets. Just reasured myself today by almost breaking the chains on the 300 yd gong at the range. Will work on cast load develpment, maybe paper patching, for the 9.3 and better sights for the .45-70 for next year's elk gun.

Practicality trumps desire for me every time. ;-)

What was the bullet that you used and the rest of the load data?
